The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1 Episode 6 Recap
Doma Smo – As the episode opens, Negan Smith (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) searches for Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) when Ginny (Mahina Napoleon) emerges from her hiding place. He hurries over to embrace her. Maggie calls for Ginny as she quickly approaches. He demands to know if she was aware of her being there. She claims to have been at the arena when she just showed up. Reminding them of the flare, Marshall Perlie Armstrong (Gaius Charles) warns they need to get out of there. Negan scolds her for interfering with their plan to rescue Hershel Rhee (Logan Kim). Perlie offers to take her to a safe location. She says, “I want you to.” To urge her to go with Perlie, he confesses to murdering five men, including her father. He explains how he tracked her and took her along because she was alone. She leaves with Perlie in tow.
Perlie prepares to launch the dock. Negan and Maggie discuss his meeting with The Croat (Zeljko Ivanek). He tells her that it may be possible for him to work out a deal with The Croat. She describes the experiences she shared with her sick mother and her daydreams of “Macy’s.” Spotting a vehicle speeding down the street, they rush to the rooftop to get a better view.
Negan and Maggie see smoke billowing upward. He compliments her for getting the smoke right. They discuss Ginny when she tries to attack him with a knife. Knocking the knife out of her hand, he shoves her to the floor. He flees outside to find the perimeter full of walkers. Outside, they come face-to-face again. While he tries to convince her to not do it, she swings her knife in his direction. The altercation comes to an end after he is stabbed and she lands on the lower platform where he eventually joins her. After another failed attack, he convinces her to calm down. He says The Croat never confiscated the “Bricks” grain, only abducted Hershel to get to him. He assures her that they could have rescued Hershel. He says no amount of apologies or excuses will be enough for her. As a group of Burazi emerges from the building, she apprehends him at knifepoint. Elated, The Croat observes from an upper balcony.
Perlie drops Ginny off at the Bricks. Seeing her jacket in the backseat, he offers it to her but she walks away. Nina (Pallavi Sastry) welcomes her back with a hug.
Maggie holds Negan at knifepoint while The Croat explains their search for him. He boasts of convincing Jerome to tell him about her. He admits questioning if she could bring him Negan. He says when he initially saw Negan alone, he believed it was luck that he would have him and Hershel. Before the exchange is made, Negan has only one request for her to take care of Ginny. He goes with The Croat as Hershel joins Maggie.
New Babylon – Perlie explains how he found and killed Negan. The new Babylon leader (Jasmin Walker) tells him that it would have been nice to have Negan on display. She assures him that they took good care of his daughters, Dessie, Bea, and Marjorie. She requests information about methane.
Hershel assures Maggie that he was safe with The Croat. She compliments his bravery. He admits to feeling safer at The Croat’s sanctuary than with her. She gifts him a “NYC” cap similar to his old one. She explains how she feels about having him back. He accuses her of only caring about avenging Glen’s murder. He suggests she is obsessed with Negan. She says he is the reason she came to Manhattan. He describes how she always made him feel as if she was looking over his shoulder, looking for Negan.
The Croat reminisces about how Negan dealt with the “River People” leader like a “rock star.” He suggests Negan saw something in him that day. He explains how Negan was patient when he struggled to beat the leader to death. He describes the experience as “beautiful.” He admits to disobeying his orders by killing the girl. He assures him that he will never do it again.
Maggie says all her entire life, it felt as if the world kept taking things from her. She promises to end whatever it is she has with Negan.
The Croat claims The Dama (Lisa Emery) warns of a future “clash of civilizations” after they gain complete control of the island. He tells Negan that she believes he is the “missing piece.” She interrupts his introduction to ask him to leave. Disappointed, he exits the room. Holding out a badge, she voices concern about the forces behind law enforcement. She stresses the importance of strong, political leadership. She promises him “keys to the kingdom” in exchange for the unification of local settlements. He unlocks a box to find a toe. She says Hershel told her how his father, Glen, was murdered while his mother, Maggie, was pregnant with him. She assures him that it would be possible to return for more of Hershel.
Hershel’s foot with the missing baby toe is displayed on the screen. Maggie discovers his sketch of The Dama. The Dama tells Negan there will be a lot of planning and discussing as the episode ends.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Finale Review
Negan is none too happy to find Ginny in Manhattan. To convince her to return to the Bricks, he lies about being her father’s killer. Perlie delivers her to Nina.
Maggie leads Negan into a trap. She made up the story about the grain. The Croat visited the Bricks looking for Negan. Knowing she knew where to find him, he takes Hershel hostage, with the promise of a future exchange. Once the swap is made, she takes a resentful Hershel back to the Bricks and he delivers Negan to The Dama.
Hershel believes Maggie’s need to avenge Glen’s death has overshadowed everything else. She promises to find a way to put it behind her.
The Dama has big plans for Negan. She wants all the settlements united to create a sanctuary that fills the entire island. To ensure he does what she asks, she amputates Hershel’s toe with the threat to collect more body parts.
Perlie is feeling the heat from the new Babylon leader. He lies about killing Negan. She is determined to hear everything he has learned about methane.
The finale wasn’t a complete success. Nearly half of the episode was dedicated to irrelevant reminiscing. It lacked action and suspense, two important elements of a good apocalyptic thriller. Labeling the series a “horror” is a travesty.
British actress, Lauren Cohan’s southern derelict is nowhere accurate. As someone born and raised in Appalachia, it is appalling that British talent is being hired to fill southern roles. I’m sure British fans feel the same.
The “toe” scenario leans toward cringeworthy. Nowhere in the series did it mention the amputation. Convenient to introduce it in the final scene.
