The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon: The Book Of Carol Season 2 Episode 5 Recap

episode 6 norman reedus walking dead daryl dixon

Vouloie, C’est Pouvoir – Episode 5 begins with Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) realizing that their vehicle has taken them as far as it’s going to. Lucky for them, they are within walking distance and have plenty to discuss to keep them occupied. The first topic is what Daryl is going to tell Laurent Carriere (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) about Isabelle Carriere (Clemence Poesy). After deciding that he will tell him the truth, he asks her what Ash Patel (Manish Dayal) is going to think about him and Laurent joining them. At the moment, they won’t have the opportunity to find out because Ash is gone.

Elsewhere, Fallou Boukar (Eriq Ebouaney) and Laurent have joined up with other survivors from the Nest raid. Things turn dicey the moment Stephane Codron (Romain Levi) shows up. The majority appears to be for killing him and they likely would have if not for Laurent telling everyone how he helped him escape. At the same time, a very short scene shows that Ash has gotten himself in a sticky situation with a horde of walkers.

In search for answers about Ash, Daryl and Carol turn up at the resistance outpost where Fallou continues to question Stephane’s return. Daryl and Carol are greeted warmly by Laurent and the others but things take an ominous turn the moment Laurent asks about Isabelle. Daryl pulls him to the side to discuss the matter while Carol informs the others about Marion Genet’s (Anne Charrier) demise. Despite everything Laurent handles Isabelle’s death well but refuses Daryl’s offer to return to America with him. In addition, he encourages Daryl to return without him.

The following morning, while enjoying the hustle and bustle of the outpost, Carol experiences her own run down memory lane when she spots a girl who reminds her of Sophia. She doesn’t get long to dwell on it because seconds later she’s with Daryl, making plans to head to the Demi Mall.

Although Daryl and Carol get VIP treatment at the Mall, it becomes clear that his relationship with the current owner is still a bit sour for both. After Carol notices one of Ash’s gas cans, Daryl will use that to his advantage to acquire weapons and a vehicle. Things have taken a much darker turn at the Resistance Outpost thanks to the arrival of Losang (Joel De La Fuente).

Daryl and Carol begin their search at Mother’s House as Losang addresses the resistance member at the Camp. Sonia (Sabine Pakora) does a decent job of making a huge show of concern and arranging a search party to look for Laurent, but Losang notices his Rubick’s Cube and orders his guard to do a search. Stephane hides Laurent and appears to be ready to give his life to protect him, but it never gets that far thanks to Fallou’s quick intervention. As Fallou and Losang spend several minutes debating their differing philosophies, Carol and Daryl find and reunite with Ash but put themselves in grave danger in the process. Although Ash is clearly concussed, he has enough wit to not only recognize Carol but question where Sophia is. She plays this off for the moment by simply ignoring the question.

Low on ammo and surrounded by walkers, Daryl and Carol catch a break when they find a stash of Genet’s super virus in the vehicle in which they are hiding. After shooting two of the walkers with separate darts, the other appears to spontaneously combust, providing the opening they need. It isn’t much longer they’ve returned to the plane and Carol is overseeing Ash’s recovery. After learning they’ll need at least 50 additional gallons of Ethanol to get home, Daryl returns to the Demi Mall, alone. He encourages Carol to tell Ash the truth before leaving.

Daryl is shocked to return to the Demi Mall to find both Laurent and Stephane awaiting his return, but he’s nearly speechless when the Mall’s leader agrees to give him the Ethanol without any resistance. Daryl is right in the middle of trying to convince Laurent to return to America with him when Losang and Jacinta (Nassima Benchicou) show up at the Mall. A very brief game of cat and mouse in the Mall’s crypt or mausoleum ensues.

After a bit of dazzling chase and some strategizing, the game of chase leads to a standoff between Daryl, Losang, Stephane, and Jacinta. Daryl ends up killing Losang and Stephane kills Jacinta. Elsewhere, Ash doesn’t take hearing Carol’s truth very well. Despite that, he ultimately agrees to fly them to America and Daryl convinces Laurent to accompany them. According to Ash, there is only one final problem – getting the plane off the ground with four people.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Review

Despite the episode being incredibly long, it wasn’t half-bad. It did a decent job of holding my attention for the most part. I think the series has started growing on me but I am glad to see it coming to an end. I’m not entirely sure how much longer this story could hold water. I did enjoy the brief stops at the Mall and the Resistance Camps as well as the showdown in the Crypt.

I was surprised there wasn’t a lot more emphasis and action placed on those two fights, but I suppose the lack thereof makes it more realistic. At least what I could see of it. The episode deserves at least a 5.5 out of 10.
