Chapter Four: Teeth – The episode begins with Remy Bouchard (Guillaume Cyr) arriving at the warehouse to learn that Leo Gauthier (Mickael Gouin) has taken him seriously at the worst possible time and hired more security. Although Leo only added a single man to the squad, he claims that Gary Montour’s (Meegwun Fairbrother) experience is so unrivaled that he’s being promoted to boss.
Remy meets Mike Byrne (Chris Diamantopoulos) and Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale) the following day at the strip club to discuss the new hire. Neither Mike nor Ruth is happy to hear that the new hire was Remy’s idea. Ruth is far less happy when she learns that Mike’s solution is to kill Gary. Despite this, and Mike’s cruel treatment, Remy appears to be on board with his plan. It takes a bit of convincing but Ruth agrees to let Mike damage Gary enough to put him out of commission for the heist. In addition to this, Ruth takes it upon herself to handle returning the three barrels that Remy and Orval Steek (Jason Cavallier) stole.
Teddy Green (Gita Miller) and Detective Valerie Nadeau (Suzanne Clement) continue to go over evidence at the station while Mike and Remy plan the Gary operation. Mike uses Remy’s bold move at the restaurant to convince Remy to invite Gary to lunch. Although he does, Gary claims that he can’t make it because he already has plans to check his traps. Remy immediately jumps on the opportunity to offer his assistance which Gary accepts. Mike couldn’t be happier or more proud.
Ruth is at home with Martin Landry (Joseph Bellerose) when she notices that Joyce (Sofia Dancea) is moving out. At the same time, Remy and Mike are in the woods, awaiting Gary’s arrival. Remy clearly becomes a bit disturbed when he notices that Mike has brought along a gun, although he claims it’s only for emergency situations. Ruth arrives at the warehouse with the three barrels and simply unloads them on the back dock and takes several pictures of them. After leaving the barrels on the dock, Ruth storms into Leonard Sr’s (Guy Nadon) office and asks how he can possibly charge her extra fines for having fines. This leads to a brief argument where Leonard claims that helping the local farmers and securing the syrup are his most important concerns. Ruth uses the pictures of the carelessly placed barrels to doubt his claims. Leonard will eventually phone the warehouse and get his workers to immediately retrieve and restock the barrels. Ruth makes sure she gets a first-row seat for the event.
Teddy and Valerie call Maurice Bouchard (Michel Perron) to the station to question him about the Minx trade. He admits to breeding and raising the critters for nearly 20 years before they question him about the Minx mitten material Mike left behind when he tried to frame Remy for Orval’s murder. Maurice practically laughs at the two ladies and asks if they are joking. Things quickly become even more confusing when he admits that the material came from Mr. Cinnamon. By this time, Remy and Gary have checked several of the traps and are on their way to check others.
As Remy and Gary make their way from trap to trap, Remy tells him all about the intricacies of the maple syrup industry while he tells him about his peacekeeping missions. At the same time, Leo continues to defend Leonard while seeing Ruth out of the Association. Ruth clearly gives him something to think about when she tells him about Joyce losing her farm. Much to Remy’s surprise, Gary offers to quit when he learns the truth about his situation. Unlike Remy, Mike isn’t willing to let Gary walk away free and clear. Once he catches up with them, he takes a shot at them. Both Remy and Gary will end up fleeing when Mike continues to pursue them. Remy tries to call Ruth for help but she apparently has a hard time hearing him. She does eventually learn they are in the North Woods and begins making her way there. At the same time, Gary calls the cops.
Unfortunately, for Mike, he runs out of ammo just as he catches up with Gary and Remy. He tries to remove Gary with hand-to-hand combat but fails miserably. After being shown up, he flees toward the road where he runs into Ruth. The two of them manage to escape undetected as Teddy and Valerie show u to question Remy and Gary.
Later that evening at the station, Teddy and Valerie have a bit of a moment while going over the case. Unfortunately, things are not going as well for Ruth, as she returns home to find that Martin is gone. This is where the episode ends.
The Sticky Review
I really enjoyed this episode and learning about the intricacies of the characters. Gary wasn’t just a good addition to this episode, but he’ll make an intriguing character for the entire series. I also like the angle of Ruth losing Martin, which practically means she’s lost everything she’s been working for. I’m not quite sure how I feel about Teddy and Valerie getting together but there is no denying that Valerie will make a formidably excellent enemy. I’d give the episode a 6 out of 10.
