Chapter Three: Margins – The episode begins with Mike Byrne (Chris Diamantopoulos) hitting some baseballs in an open field before disposing of the bat he used to kill Orval Steeks (Jason Cavalier).
Elsewhere, Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale) lures Florence Russell (Vickie Papavs) to the farm, under the guise of Martin Landry’s (Joseph Bellerose) ailing health. The ensuing argument not only reveals that Ruth and Florence are sisters, but as a nurse, Florence is completely against Martin being treated at home. After quite a bit of screaming and pointing the finger, Ruth convinces Florence to take the morning off to watch Martin while she runs errands.
Leo (Mickael Gouin) attempts to convince Leonard Gauthier Sr. (Guy Nadon) to drop his pursuit of Ruth over breakfast. Leonard scoffs at the suggestion but soon learns that the entire town shares a similar view. At the same time, Ruth meets with Mike to tell him about their storage container problem. Before this meeting ends, Ruth tries to convince Mike to apologize to Remy Bouchard (Guillaum Cyr) for threatening him. Although Mike refuses to do so, he changes his tune the second Remy shows up. It takes a bit of convincing but Mike gets him onboard.
Detective Valerie Nadeau (Suzanne Clement) arrives for her first official day on the Steeks investigation when she finds Teddy Green (Gita Miller) in her office, posting crime scene photos to a corkboard. Nadeau makes a brief joke about arts and crafts that flies over Teddy’s head. This impromptu meeting leads to the discovery of Steek’s storage unit.
Remy, Ruth, and Mike are already on their way to the storage unit when they notice Green’s police vehicle pull up beside them. This leads to a bit of hectic debating that comes to an abrupt end when Green and Nadeau take an unexpected exit. Remy and Ruth’s collective relief is only enjoyed for a moment due to Mike taking the same exit and following them.
When Green and Nadeau pull off at a fast food restaurant, it is revealed that Green forgot to call in the warrant for the storage unit. Much to Remy and Ruth’s dismay, Mike apparently wants to follow Nadeau and Green and delay their trip further by sabotaging their vehicle. Although both authorization and verification for the warrant come back immediately, Nadeau decides to grab lunch at the burger joint. Still enamored with the search of the vehicle, Mike doesn’t realize Green and Nadeau are about to take a seat within view of their vehicle. Luckily, Ruth does notice and is quick enough to block their view with the box truck. Once this is accomplished, it is Remy who deflates one of the front tires using his multi-tool.
Upset with the situation at the diner, Leonard races over to the Landry Farm where he meets Florence for the first time. Florence appears stunned that Leonard actually exists but once he starts threatening with taxes, bylaws, and seizures of property, Florence realizes he is as ruthless as Ruth claimed. Florence verbally berates him as he scampers off.
By this time, Remy, Ruth, and Mike have broken into the storage shed while Nadeau and Green have discovered the flat tire. Instead of calling a tow truck, Nadeau set out to change the flat. As Remy digs through the storage contents, Ruth pulls Mike to the side to question him about his involvement in Orval’s death. Mike sticks to his guns, claiming that he was not involved, which is a good thing because Ruth was ready to back out upon learning that he was. Although Remy locates the barrels shortly after this, Nadeau and Green show up. They will eventually locate and try to open the unit but fail thanks to Mike, Ruth, and Remy hiding inside, keeping the unit closed.
Assuming the door is jammed, Nadeau and Green leave to locate the manager. By the time they return, Ruth, Mike, and Remy are long gone but have made the crucial mistake of leaving the broken lock behind. Discovering this leads to Nadeau realizing the flat was not an accident. By the time Nadeau and Green return to the restaurant to confiscate the surveillance tape, Remy, Ruth, and Mike have made it to the warehouse. Much to Remy’s surprise, Leo has hired a new guard, Gary Montour (Meegwun Fairbrother). This is where the episode ends.
The Sticky Review
I figured things were going too well, too quickly when Remy, Ruth, and Mike made it to the warehouse without much complication. The added security guard not only caught me by total surprise but could turn out to be a welcome addition to the cast. I also enjoyed how Nadeau and Green were always just one step right behind the bumbling trio. It’s also entertaining to watch Leonard dig himself further and further into a whole with the town and farmers. It appears he’s been screwing them for years. I’d give the episode a 5.7 and look forward to the next.
