Chapter 2: Insertion Point – Chapter 2 begins with Leonard Gauthier Sr. (Guy Nation) and Leo (Mickael Gouin) listening to hundreds of hate-filled voice messages, inspired by Ruth Landry’s (Margo Martindale) act. After seemingly having heard enough, Leonard calls the local authorities to report Ruth for harassment, intimidation, threats, and destruction of property.
Mike Byrne (Chris Diamantopoulos) and Remy Bouchard (Guillaume Cyr) are right in the middle failing to convince Ruth to help with the heist when she learns about the charges. This debacle not only ends in Ruth’s arrest but it later nearly scares Remy from participating in the heist himself.
Once Officers Teddy Green (Gita Miller) and Don Leblanc (Tristan D Lalla) get Ruth booked in at the station, she uses her one call to phone, Florence Russell (Vickie Papavs). Florence refuses to bail out Ruth but agrees to check in on Martin Landry (Joseph Landry).
After the meeting, Remy returns home where he learns about the death of Orval Steeks (Jason Cavalier) from his father, Maurice Bouchard (Michel Perron). If the earlier confrontation at the diner wasn’t enough to scare Remy out of the heist, learning that his best friend was found floating in a barrel of maple syrup is. Upon learning of the death, Remy meets with Mike to tell him that he is backing out of the deal. Mike is not only very unemotional about the event but practically tells Remy that there is no backing out now. It isn’t clear where things stand because Remy simply walks away from the meeting with a stunned expression while Mike continues to threaten him.
Ruth’s already painful arrest is made even worse when Leonard shows up to mock her and build further rapport with the officers. At the same time, Remy takes his frustration out on Century Bob Punching Bag.
As time passes, Leo drops the charges against Ruth, and she is released from jail. At nearly the same time, Mike sneaks out to Orval’s Farm and plants Remy’s mittens. Mike also receives a call from Charlie (Mark O’Brien) who scolds him for not sending in the payments and trimming Loraine, the boss’s prized plant.
Mike immediately sets out to accomplish these tasks, but an unexpected visit from an excited Ruth causes him to trim far too much from Loraine. Ruth has not only changed her mind about the heist but claims the ultimate solution to all the heist’s prior problems is to remove the syrup from the barrels so the Association never knows they’ve been robbed.
Despite Mike appearing hesitant about the heist himself and telling Ruth that Remy has backed out, he later drops her off at Remy’s house to change his mind. She does this by sharing the story of the day Martin fell out of the tree. It takes a bit of work but she ultimately convinces him after she reveals her surprisingly clever idea. As it stands right now, their biggest problem is replacing the barrels that Remy sold to Orval before anyone notices.
The episode ends with Mike returning to Orval’s cabin and stealing back Remy’s mittens. Although he accomplishes this without incident, it appears that he leaves behind a small piece of material from the mittens.
The Sticky Review
I cannot say the episode was horrible, despite being filled with tons of bumbling ineptitude. That said, I suppose it is the ineptitude that drives criminal-based series such as this one. I do appreciate how all three of the main characters could be considered ‘losers’ amongst their peers. This will no doubt make their victory all the sweeter if that is how things play out.
I thought the whole tree scenario with Ruth was a bit far-fetched, but I was more than willing to overlook this because the characters are certainly people, I could get behind. I’d have to give the episode a 5.8 out of 10 and look forward to seeing how this caper unravels.
