The Sounds Episode 6 Recap

At the beginning of the episode, Maggie Cabbott (Rachelle Lefevre) tells Tom (Matt Whelan) that they only need to stick with the plan and their first meet-up is in four weeks. They go over their strategy which they’ve planned within an inch of their lives. Maggie reminds him that they don’t have to do this and could easily go sailing around New Zealand before going home. She says the money doesn’t matter. Tom says he wants it and he knows there is no going back. They head back into the woods and Maggie realizes her husband is hurt. He tells her about being trapped by the water tower and she believes the wound is serious. They chat about Ru’s daughter and the fact that Pelous wasn’t the perfect town after all. Maggie wants to know who treated Tom’s arm. He says it was an ex-con hermit who won’t be a problem.

They agree that things have been messed up on both sides. Maggie tells him about Esther (Emily Piggford) and his family trying to get involved in their business. Tom is done being in the bush so he wants to change their plan immediately but Maggie reminds him that they spent three years putting together this plan. She says they need to stick to the plan like glue to avoid going to prison. In a flashback, Maggie meets with Tom at a pub and finds out that he wanted to drink but didn’t. He tells her about the guy blindsiding him before we hear Frank (John Bach) talk about gross revenue rising at more than 10% per annum. Tom and Nate (Josh McKenzie) listen to their father talk about building the company and his father nearly destroying it.

Frank goes on to talk about picking the next CEO of the company and admits it will be difficult. Frank gives the position to Nate and says it is up to Nate to see if he can find a role for Tom. Nate is confident he will be able to find a job for his brother but Tom quickly storms out of the room. Maggie learns about everything and says they need to get away from these people for good. She says they should get out of Canada and that they’ll be able to be a family on their own. She also suggests trying another adoption but Tom isn’t sure his father will let him walk away from the company. A man listens nearby as Tom says he doesn’t want to be poor but Maggie suggests there are worse things to worry about. That man, Monty Roberts (Peter Feeney), approaches and introduces himself.

He explains that he works for Frank and protects his assets. He has a proposal he would like Tom to hear. They sit at a nearby table and Monty explains that he can siphon off $60 million and bury it in a cavern of trusts and shell companies so no one except for Tom will be able to find it. Tom can burn out or disappear before turning up a few years later and getting the money where Monty tells him it is located. He is confident nobody will ever be able to connect them to the money. Maggie is worried about the consequences but Monty twists the knife by explaining that choosing Nate wasn’t a recent decision that they had been meeting without Tom for a couple of years now. Monty admits he won’t get away with it but he has cancer will be dying anyway.

Monty believes this is the best way to get even with Frank and he wants to make sure his ex and daughters will get $10 million of the money when Tom collects it. Maggie doesn’t like the proposal but Monty gives them another opportunity to accept. When they return home, Maggie and Tom argue about that decision with Tom suggesting they go for it. We return the present and Maggie asks if Monty was a setup all along. She asks if Tom has arranged for Monty to be there at the bar. Tom denies it and says he had nothing to do with it. He also suggests Monty saved them from his father who is a monster. Tom believes they’re getting away with it but Maggie still isn’t happy with the way things are going. She admits she no longer believes a single word her husband says.

She asks him about the baby but he doesn’t understand why she would dig that up now. In a flashback, Maggie meets with Frank who says she is more intelligent than Tom. She says he’ll never finish college if he becomes a father at 21. He warns her that she’ll ruin her life, the kid’s life, and Tom’s life. Frank wants her to reconsider her decision to have a child. Back to the present, Tom tells his wife she doesn’t know what he has been through before asking what this is all about. She says it is about trust because they can’t have a marriage without it. In another flashback, Maggie returns home and finds that Tom is distraught. He says he met with Monty and his dad paid the baby’s mom to take her back.

Monty arranged the payment and helped Frank pay the woman off so they couldn’t get what they wanted. Maggie can’t take it since she held the girl for a week and Frank took her away from them. Before long, Maggie sets up a meeting with Monty and asks him how they would carry out the plan to steal money from Frank. He tells her to open a business far away and he will give her the key to the money. Then, she can sell the business to a shell company she owns and launder her way to happiness. Maggie decides to increase the stakes and asks for $160 million instead of $60. She wants to go into the protest business. Monty says he is going to give her a name and address before suggesting she keep it to herself and not tell Tom.

He warns her that Tom is still a Cabbott. Back to the present, Maggie asks what Tom has been hiding from her all this time. He reminds her that they’re in this together and always have been. He claims he has been hiding nothing about the salmon hatchery. She tells him what happened with the blank environmental report and what she had to do to remedy that problem. Tom fights back by telling Maggie she lost her halo when she decided to steal $160 million so she should stop with her high and mighty crap. She admits she did and everything has been a mistake. In another flashback, Tom meets with his family so he can tell them about the salmon farm venture. Tom wants $5 million for his trust fund to set up the business.

Nate says it seems reasonable but his father doesn’t think it’ll make any money. When they leave, Tom and Maggie agree they’re really doing this. In the present, Maggie says they picked this area because it was a fishbowl and they wanted everyone to see how much they loved each other. However, Tom blew that. He promises that the drinking was a minor, social thing and he never lost control. He promises that it will never happen again. She asks if there is anything else she needs to know before we see a flashback of Tom with Zoe McGregor (Anna-Maree Thomas). He says no and he swears on his life that he is telling the truth. He asks about the meth pipe but Tom doesn’t know what she is talking about and denies it is his. She asks him about the cop’s daughter Zoe.

She complains that he betrayed her and put her in danger. Then, she pleads with him not to lie to her anymore before saying she can’t handle any more of his lies. Tom claims he falls apart when he isn’t with her and Zoe got him at a weak moment. He admits Frank might be right about him not having what it takes before Maggie tells him about his baby. He says it is a lie and Zoe is just a small town loser. She says Tom got everything he wanted but not with her. We jump back in time and watch as the couple visits a fertility clinic. Maggie tells him she feels like she is being punished before he suggests adopting a baby. We watch as she gets upset when she is forced to give the baby back. In the present, Maggie wonders what happened to them and says they could’ve moved away when Frank gave Nate the company.

He gets permission to get closer to her before hugging her and admitting he is a screw up. Tom says nothing has to change due to his mistakes and they only need to ramp up the timing. He tells her he needs food and clothes. Maggie can’t believe Tom would leave his daughter. She wants him to return to town and say he was lost in the bushes. She wants to say in Pelorus and stop what they’re doing. She makes it clear that she cares more about the baby than their relationship and the money. Tom refuses to go back and wants to get the money. He says they can send her money and set up a trust fund for her but Maggie says Frank was right because Tom doesn’t have what it takes. Tom grabs her by the arm before the argument begins spiraling out of control and Tom confesses to killing someone.

He tells her about killing the hermit, Ryan (Scott Cotter), but says it was an accident. Tom doesn’t believe anyone will ever find the body and thinks he took care of it. Tom tells her that he isn’t the spineless wimp people thought he was. She says it can still work. She wants to walk back into town and tell the truth. Tom isn’t going to let her leave and start a new life without him. He says she needs time to think before Tom knocks her to the ground before apologizing quickly. She tries to leave and head to the boat but Tom doesn’t want her to go. She makes a run for it and Tom quickly chases after her before tackling her to the ground. She stabs a branch through his arm and runs. Tom grabs the shotgun while Maggie hides from him.

He tells her about being sorry his entire miserable life and promises she can trust him. She tries to escape while Tom screams that he loves her. He eventually traps her and tells her he only wants them to be together. He explains they need to get out of there and everything will be okay. Tom freaks out and suggests his wife doesn’t love him anymore. She leaps from the rock and crashes into the water below. Tom grabs her and yanks the necklace from her neck before she kicks him in the face and he sinks.

The Sounds Review

Well, this was a completely different episode of The Sounds. I am really surprised that they decided to lay everything out on the table this early into the season. It feels like all of the show’s secrets have been revealed now and I am not sure how it’ll carry on without the element of surprise. I am pretty confident they could’ve achieved this much quicker. This could’ve been covered in half of an episode so we could have moved on to something else.

I’ll say that the revelation makes sense though. It is much easier to understand why Tom did what he did now. While still difficult to believe, I guess this is a little more believable than what the writers could’ve fed us. I am a bit befuddled as to where this will go now. I suppose Maggie will return to town and team up with Jack and Esther to bring Tom to justice.

Who knows? Since there are only two episodes left, I might as well stick around and find out what happens though. This episode was okay but I wish they would’ve covered it a bit quicker and moved on to something else. The episode scores a 7 out of 10. Previous recaps of The Sounds are available on Reel Mockery.
