As the episode opens, DS Rick Sheldon (Richard Harrington) pulls up in front of his house. During a phone call, he informs DI Ffion Lloyd (Elen Rhys) of DCI Alan Vaughan) suspending him. She says he is a brilliant detective and it wasn’t her intention for him to confess. He denies having slept with her to distract her and professes to love her. She claims to love him as well. He ends the call and goes inside to find a point boiling on the stove. Unable to find Helen Sheldon (Rhian Blythe), he dials her number, and her phone rings in the other room. Running to his car, he leaves Gail a voicemail asking if she has spoken to Helen. Elsewhere, Lisa Redwood (Hannah Daniel) tells Ffion that she would like her to stay in Pembroke Dock. Delyth Lloyd (Sharon Morgan) feels the same but refuses to stand in her way. Rick arrives, informs Ffion that Helen is missing, and asks if she spoke to her. She says no. He voices concern about Helen being abducted and Mel/Robbie Jenkins not being the real killer. She urges him to go home because he has been suspended. En route to the bunker in Cleddau Woods, Ffion calls in backup. Upon arrival, they see signs of kids being there recently. When she notifies Rick, he says it will be the seventh day in 15 minutes. She urges him to go home in case Helen returns.
Day 7 – Rick wakes up in his car and contacts DC “Mogsy” Morgan (Mali Ann Rees). She tells him there is no update on Helen. A team of police officers search Cleddau Woods. At Heddlu Police Department, DCI Alan Vaughn (Ioan Hefin) asks for Ffion’s opinion. She says they can’t be too careful when Rick barges in and asks if they have anything on John Shaw. She tells him that Shaw provided the prison with a fake ID and address. Stressed, he insists Mel never killed Abbi Rayner and the real killer has Helen. Vaughan asks if Helen is trying to teach them a lesson by disappearing. Ffion says Helen didn’t like the idea of them working together. Rick adds that Helen got upset when he never contacted her from the hotel where he and Ffion were staying. Mogsy shows them images of John Shaw at the prison. Ffion recognizes him as Jamie Tilston (Sion Alun Davies), Griff’s caregiver. She calls Delyth to see if Jamie showed up for his shift. Delyth denies having been in contact with him. Ffion orders her to keep the doors locked and don’t let him in. Delyth explains how she found him via the Castledge Agency. Mogsy calls Castledge to verify Jamie’s employment. Ffion tells Delyth that Jamie may have killed Abbi. DS Celyn Howells (Aled Pugh) discovers Jamie was utilizing a prepaid phone to keep in touch with Paul Harvey (Ian Puleston-Davies) in prison. Mogsy says Jamie has been working at Castledge for the last four months. Rick warns that Sian Hinton was killed 16 hours after she disappeared and they have until noon to find Helen alive. Vaughan orders him to go home. Celyn asks for a recent photo of Helen. Rick asks Ffion how she missed it when it was right under her nose.
Mogsy and a team of officers raid Jamie’s house. Upon returning home, Rick hears a noise and goes upstairs to look around. Mogsy discovers a closet wall covered with newspaper clippings of the Heart Knot Murders and photos of Helen and Abbi. Rick finds Mati Sheldon (Lily Williams) in her room. She says her grandmother dropped her off to pick up a few things. He doesn’t tell her about Helen. During a phone call, Mogsy reports a strong bleach odor at Jamie’s house. She Celyn a photo of a woman holding a boy. Llandudno is inscribed on the back. They figure out that the passcode to Jamie’s tablet is the date of the first Heart Knot Murder. He last utilized the tablet 20 minutes ago, west of Cleddau Woods. Mati leaves with her grandparents. Ffion updates Rick on the case. A week before Abbi was killed, Harvey sent Jamie a text that read, “There’s no such thing as morality, Jamie. We’re all capable of evil, but some lack the courage to act on their true desires. I know you have it in you to kill. This is your time to shine, my boy.” Ffion arrives at the search location. Vaughan says they have 90 minutes to find Helen if Jamie is following Harvey’s MO.
At the hospital, Jan (Anita Reynolds) tells Rick that Helen planned to leave work at 3:30pm and go to the grocery store. He shows her a photo of Jamie whom she doesn’t recognize. Anna Jennings/Anna Harvey (Eiry Thomas) was Helen’s last patient. A short time later, Rick shows Anna the photo of Jamie. She denies knowing him and invites him in. Ffion calls Griff Lloyd (Williams Thomas) to see if he remembers where the fourth bunker is located. He recalls representing Dewi Osborne who held his wife and children in a Cold War bunker for three weeks. Anna pours Rick a cup of tea and recalls Helen staying with her until her cab arrived. Scanning the Osborne case file, Griff finds the coordinates of the bunker. Ffion asks if he mentioned the bunker to Jamie. He doesn’t remember him. She calls him her hero and races off to find the bunker. Anna tells Rick that she had lung cancer and it metastasized to her brain. Feeling intoxicated, he goes to the bathroom and calls Ffion. Anna knocks on the door. At the bunker, Mogsy, Ffion, and a team of officers find Jamie but not Helen. A short time later, Jamie is put in a police cruiser. Unable to contact Rick, Ffion leaves him a voicemail/
Vaughan watches Celyn and Ffion interrogate Jamie via a one-way glass. Jamie denies being manipulated by Harvey and refuses to give up Helen’s location. She asks about his mother, Mandy, who he took care of until she overdosed on fentanyl four months ago. He asks her to not bring his mother into it. She says he is star-struck with Harvey. He admits to approaching Harvey first. Celyn asks if Harvey asked him to copy his killings to win him an appeal. Jamie claims Helen is dead and Harvey is his father who had an affair with his mother while seeing Anna. She suggests Harvey chose Anna over his mother. He says like Rick chose Helen over her. During a visit, Harvey ordered 16-year-old Jamie not to contact him again because his “b**ch” wife was messed up in the head. He complains about Helen forcing Harvey to choose Mel over him. Ffion points out that he was there when Sian Hinton and Mari were murdered. He apologized to Harvey for letting him take the rap for their murders. She expresses how impressed she is with him killing the nurses while the police never knew of his existence. He requests an attorney. Celyn ends the interview.
Vaughan informs Fion that DNA confirms Harvey is Jamie’s father. She insists Jamie never murdered Sian and Mari. He suggests Jamie killed Helen and Abbi to get Harvey off the hook. Celyn says Jamie’s car was discovered in the woods. Listening to Rick’s voicemail, Ffion hears Anna in the background. A short time later, Anna is working on a puzzle and drowns out a banging noise with music. Ffion finds Rick’s car in the driveway. She enters the house. At the police station, Celyn tells Vaughan that the DNA on Abbi’s scarf was female but it didn’t belong to Helen. Ffion finds three bassinettes, with heart knots, in a nursery at Anna’s house. Restrained to a post, Rick wakes up groggy. Anna tells him that she wants him to watch Helen die. Helen is restrained to a nearby post, with a mouth gag. After requesting backup, Ffion retrieves a box cutter and enters the basement where she finds Helen and Rick. Anna hits her on the head with a metal pipe. In jail, Jamie tells himself that he could have done it this time.
At the Harvey house, Anna admits to lying about Harvey abusing her and complains about Mel not writing to her when he was deployed. She says Jamie cowered out of killing Abbi but agreed to kill Helen in the bunker until Rick showed up. Utilizing the box cutter, Ffion cuts at her restraints. Rick asks if Harvey killed the nurses. Anna blames them for her babies dying and calls them demons. She explains how she told Abbi about the abuse over tea before strangling her. He asks what happened to Sian. She claims Harvey abducted her and they kept her alive to find out who else knew about Mel being abused. She says it was true love when Harvey voluntarily took the rap. She fills a syringe. Ffion cuts at her restraints. Anna accuses him of sleeping with Fiona and asks how he could do that to the mother of his children. She injects the drugs into Helen’s neck and blames them for keeping her and Harvey apart. She strangles an unconscious Helen. He pleads with her to kill him. Freeing her restraints, Ffion charges Anna and rushes over to help Helen who isn’t breathing. Anna swings a pipe.
At the police department, Vaughan tells Rick that Jamie was arrested for aiding and abetting and released on bail. Rick admits to coercing Alex to lie. Vaughan puts him on unpaid leave. Mogsy gives him a bouquet. At the hospital, Rick and Ffion embrace. He asks if she is going to return to Cardiff. She tells him to go hug Helen before walking away. Rick professes to love Helen. She asks if he slept with Ffion. He apologizes. She asks him to move out because she needs to escape the past. She assures him that they will be all right. Ffion lights a cigarette, puts it out, and tosses it and the entire pack in the waste bin.
Jamie stops at a red light, watches two girls cross the street, smiles, and speeds away.
The One That Got Away Review
The finale was unique for the most part. Instead of one killer, there was Anna and her three accomplices – Jamie, Mel, and Harvey. She blamed the nurses for the deaths of her babies. The story provides little in the way of how she killed Mari. After Mari called Social Services on them for abusing Mel, Harvey abducted her and Anna killed her. Anna meant for Jamie to kill Abbi but he cowered out, so she did it. They set Mel up to take the rap.
The ending alludes to Jamie having a tendency to murder. It’s difficult to believe Anna had that much influence on him when he was raised by his mother and Harvey had nothing to do with him. They were only together for the past four months. There was no murder gene to pass to him.
