The episode opens with DI Ffion Lloyd (Elen Rhys) and DS Rick Sheldon (Richard Harrington) waking up in bed together. She goes to the bathroom and he checks his phone to find two missed calls from Helen Sheldon (Rhian Blythe). She receives a call about Mel/Robbie Jenkins’ suicide.
Day 6 – At HMP Whitehaven Prison, Ffion and Rick enter the cell where Paul Harvey (Ian Puleston-Davies) is being held. Harvey insists on speaking with Ffion alone. Rick says it isn’t his call. Harvey threatens not to talk. Ffion agrees to stay. Rick reluctantly leaves. Harvey says they hold themselves responsible for Mel’s death because he was a messed-up kid. He points out she isn’t wearing a wedding ring like Rick. She threatens to leave if he doesn’t get to the point. In the hallway, Rick receives a call from Helen who scolds him for not answering his phone. He claims to have stayed in the bar until late and didn’t see her calls until this morning. She curses him and ends the call. In the holding cell, Harvey tells Ffion that he was home on the night Sian Hinton was dumped in Cleddau Woods. He recalls getting upset with her and Rick when they questioned him 12 years ago. He returned home to find Robbie in a nightmarish state and locked him in the “box room” to have some peace. Harvey assures her the box room was completely safe. He suggests she doesn’t have kids. She reminds him that he asked about Mari Quinlan who called Social Services after finding Mel covered in bruises and his ribs fractured. Harvey says Mel threw himself down the stairs. Anna Harvey (Eiry Thomas) sang to Mel all night outside the door and he wore headphones while watching TV, so they wouldn’t have known if Mel slipped out. He claims Mel kept his van key on his heart knot key ring, which he was obsessed with.
At Heddlu Police Department, DCI Alan Vaughn (Ian Hefin) talks to his superior on the phone. DS Celyn Howells (Aled Pugh) informs him that Abbi Rayner’s scarf was sent to forensics. Vaughn says hopefully they return with the “right result” and asks where are Rick and Ffion. At prison, Ffion questions the timing of Harvey’s statement. Harvey attributes his decision to come forward to Abbi’s murder. He says Anna set him up. She suggests Anna did it to escape his abuse. He insists she has no idea how far a father would go to protect their son because she is childless. She reminds him that he was Mel’s foster parent. He professes to have loved him. She asks why he would grass Mel out now. Harvey claims to have seen Mel on the news and realized how evil he had become. Rick receives a call from Vaughn demanding to know where they are. Rick claims they came to Whitehaven to ensure Harvey wasn’t responsible for Mel’s suicide. He says Mel was in the VP where Harvey couldn’t access him. Harvey tells Ffion that Mari left his house on foot after assessing Mel. He went grocery shopping and when he returned, a distressed Mel was in the kitchen, with his boots covered in mud. He suggests Mel was in the woods because he loved exploring the bunkers. She asks if he is suggesting Mel pursued and strangled Mari. He adds that Mel put her in the bunker. He suggests he wanted to stop her from splitting them up. He says Mari and Sian signed their own death warrants. Ffion asks if they killed them together. He says no.
Ffion leaves Harvey’s cell, passes Rick, and goes out to smoke. He pursues her outside. She informs him of Harvey denying having killed Sian and Mari. She questions if they got it wrong. Outside the police station, Rick warns Ffion against telling Vaughn that she and Harvey talked about the historic murders. He says no one wants the case reopened and Harvey has gotten to her. She asks if he will confess to Helen that they slept together. He suggests they keep it between the two of them. Vaughn tells them that forensics found Abbi and an unidentified individual’s DNA on her scarf, not Mel’s. Rick says the scarf was a gift from Helen, so they should test her DNA. Vaughn insists Mel killed Abbi. Ffion tells them that she is going to go back through the evidence. A short time later, Alex Hinton (Sule Rimi) tells Ffion that a black van, driven by Harvey, emerged from the woods, in front of him on the night Sian was taken to the bunker. She asks why he didn’t identify Harvey as the driver until after his arrest. He picked Harvey out of a lineup. She says they suspect Harvey’s accomplice was driving the van. At the police station, Rick looks for Ffion but the evidence room is empty. At the Hinton residence, she ignores his call and shows Alex a photo of Mel, Abbi’s killer, and the school gunman. Stressed, Alex claims Rick pressured him into saying Harvey was driving the van. A short time later, she calls Rick and vows to never sleep with him again.
Ffion finds a frightened Anna hiding after a rock smashed through her window. At the hospital, Rick invites Helen on a picnic. Elsewhere, Anna questions how Mel will survive in prison. Ffion informs her of his death. She breaks down sobbing. Outside the hospital, Helen admits to being threatened by Ffion. Rick claims to have gotten into an argument with Ffion who thinks Harvey had an accomplice. Seeing Rick with Helen, Griff Lloyd (Williams Thomas) demands to know what is going on. Rick tries to explain that Helen is his wife but Griff gets irate. Jamie Tilston (Sion Alun Davies) apologizes and escorts Griff away. Elsewhere, Anna insists Mel is innocent in the Rayner case. She confirms Harvey’s story that Mari left their house on foot. While she was in the bath, she heard his van leave. When she got out of the tub, Harvey had returned with food and Mel was in the shower. Ffion tells her what Harvey said about Mel being agitated and his boots, covered in mud. Anna insists he is lying and trying to pin the murder on Mel. At the hospital, Helen suggests to Rick that they spend the night alone. Outside the hospital. Ffion promises Anna that Harvey will remain in prison. Anna goes inside. Ffion sends Rick a message asking him to meet her at the castle at 3pm. In his response, he asks her not to say anything to Helen. He watches her from his car. At prison, Harvey appears to receive a text on a mobile phone.
Ffion shows Rick their initials carved in a bench near the castle. She accuses him of betraying her again. He professes to love Helen. She tells him what Alex said about being pressured by him to say Harvey was driving the van. At prison, a guard searches Harvey’s cell and finds the phone. At the castle, Ffion says if Mel was the driver, Abbi would still be alive. Rick curses her and calls Harvey evil. She accuses him of putting Alex up to lie at Sian’s murder trial. She says Mel may not be Abbi’s killer. She reminds him that Mel met Abbi and asks how he got her scarf. He argues that Mel’s DNA wasn’t found on her scarf. She believes he wore gloves. At the police station, Celyn informs DC “Mogsy” Morgan (Mali Ann Rees) of the phone found in Harvey’s cell. At the castle, Ffion warns that if Harvey’s statement comes out, it would compromise his conviction, and Rick would face a custodial sentence. Rick suggests he would get 10 years. She questions if he slept with her to distract her and accuses him of going to the prison to watch her. She calls him weak, a liar, and a sham before walking away.
Celyn informs Rick and Ffion that Harvey had a phone in his cell and was texting “J” who sent him a letter four months ago. On October 17, John Shaw visited Harvey. In a text, Harvey expresses his excitement in stalking and smelling her fear. He declines a second visit with John. On November 11, the day after Abbi was murdered, Harvey texts John about the nurse. John responded she deserved it. Harvey told him not to contact him again. This morning, Harvey sent John a text that read, “It’s safe now.” Ffion suggests it had to do with Mel being charged with Abbi’s murder and now, he is dead. Vaughn says John is a fanboy and there is no need to investigate him. He asks Rick if he doubts Mel is Abbi’s killer. Rick points out that Mel was the last person to see her alive and her scarf was found in his shack. Ffion insists on investigating John before leaving. A short time later, Griff, Delyth Lloyd (Sharon Morgan), Jamie, and Lisa Redwood (Hannah Daniel) are having supper when Ffion arrives. Griff asks if Rick is with her. Frustrated, she says their relationship ended 12 years ago. He leaves the table. She later apologizes. He tells her that he isn’t useful to anyone. She disagrees and says she needs him.
Rick confesses to Vaughn about instructing Alex to give a false statement. Ffion tells Griff about the case. Vaughn warns of what his confession will do to the Harvey case. Rick apologizes. Vaughn promises to speak with Ffion. Elsewhere, Ffion tells Griff that she slept with Rick. He asks what she is afraid of. She fears someone else will die. Jamie listens from outside the door when Delyth approaches. He assures her that Griff and Ffion are okay. She thanks him before he leaves. At the police station, Rick receives a text from Helen who is anticipating his arrival. Helen is cooking when the doorbell rings. Believing it is Rick, she answers the door. The intruder attacks her.
