As the seventh episode of The Lazarus Project begins, Shiv nearly runs down George once again. George (Paapa Essiedu) tells Shiv he is going to bring Sarah and him back. When Shiv (Rudi Dharmalingam) returns to the present, he ignores a call from Archie (Anjli Mohindra). George tells Sarah (Charly Clive) that he needs to go. He doesn’t want to go and promises to come back. Moments later, George runs into Shiv and they hold guns at one another. George reminds him that he would bring him back while Shiv reminds George that he would come for him. Shiv asks if he is going to shoot him again. George says that isn’t him because everyone he ever killed just came back. He is going to get away with it because everyone already thinks Shiv is responsible for setting off Big Boy.
Shiv is happy to let them know it was him. George doesn’t think people will believe that, but Shiv says bringing his girlfriend back from the dead would be a good motive. George mentions the woman he loves Janet and how Shiv has been sending her money. He suggests something happened to Janet’s daughter so they wanted to set off the bomb. She already lost one kid because of Shiv. What was he supposed to do? Shiv calls that BS, but George believes it is a motive. They curse one another before George tells Shiv to look at what Lazarus has done to him. He believes Shiv can be happy like Janet. George says everyone is on their way here and he knows how this ends. Shiv asks what it feels like getting everything he wanted back.
Once George says it was worth it, Shiv tells him that they’ll see. After Shiv leaves, George returns to bed with Sarah. He gets up in the morning and immediately hugs Sarah. He claims work called him last night before she says his boss treats him like crap. When they go to the school, George tells Sarah that he needs to talk to Karl. He tells her to watch for trucks. Then, he tells Karl that he looked at his portfolio last night and saw that DeWhitt and Weston had tanked. He tells him not to panic because he secured the investment and moved some shares around. Karl is relieved. When George goes to the office, Archie tells him that he is grinning like an idiot. She jokes about reporting him to the HR department. They briefly talk about Sarah before George asks if she managed to talk to Ryan.
She says she did and George’s story checked out. Archie believes it was all Shiv. George asks whether they’ll find him. Archie doesn’t think they’ll find him if he doesn’t want to be found. He says they found Rebrov. Archie suggests Dennis wanted to be found so he could get a look at them and identify their weaknesses. She thinks he is more dangerous now than before. Once Sarah gets home, she tells George that she is meeting Tash and Susie at the pub later. George agrees to tag along. While hanging out with them, George remembers some of the things that didn’t happen and decides to leave. Meanwhile, a team tries to take Rebrov (Tom Burke). After a shootout, Rebrov leaves the building with blood on his cheek.
The Lazarus Project believe Rebrov waited there to kill them to show that he could. Wes (Caroline Quentin) says Shiv’s trail is cold although these cases don’t close. They never stop looking. As time goes on, George hands out with Sarah and her family. She tells her parents that she wants to go to Paris. Three months later, George and Sarah have dinner at a fancy restaurant in Paris. Sarah reveals she wants a cigarette right now. She suggests doing a runner and buying a pack, but George was looking forward to dessert. Sarah asks whether George thinks she is exciting because she doesn’t think she is anymore. George believes she just grew up. Sarah asks if he remembers when they first met. It feels like a million years ago. She wonders if she’d even recognize herself and what old Sarah would think of her now.
George insists there is nothing wrong with her before his dessert arrives. As they leave, they discuss the night they met. Sarah confesses she was there for someone else that night. She had a friend she fancied and was going to get off with that but met George and is glad she did. She is also glad they came here. Sarah suggests going somewhere else such as Russia or Israel instead of going home. She doesn’t want to stagnate and would prefer living more. Later, George asks Sarah to marry him. If she is going to go on adventures, he wants her to take him too. She says okay. In the morning, Sarah admits she can’t marry him because she isn’t sure if she is really happy. It isn’t George because he has been great. She thought it might be a phase that would pass, but it hasn’t.
When he asked her to marry him, she had a foghorn going off in her head telling her not to do it. Furthermore, she isn’t sure that they want the same things. She thinks they’re different people now since he is content with the things she wants to change. George can change and will go anywhere she wants to go. Sarah doesn’t want him to break himself apart to refit himself into something she needs. Nothing George says is going to change Sarah’s mind. When George tells Archie, she admits this isn’t the first time a relationship has been destroyed by time loops. Archie says she might’ve come back for a reason, but she might have a higher purpose that has nothing to do with him. George wants her to remind him to take her to a pub and make her feel worse if she ever gets dumped.
Archie changes the subject by revealing that Shiv popped up in Hamburg. He was using his credit card in a crowded pub with CCTV cameras. He wants them to know he is there although she isn’t sure why. She won’t say it is impossible for Shiv to be the mole, but she thinks something stinks. Although she is tired of hearing about Sarah, Archie believes it is a victory that she is back and they don’t always get victories. Later that night, George looks at Sarah’s social media page and accidentally likes one of her photos. At work, he finds out about some murders in Hamburg and sees a blackbird necklace on the ground. Wes tells George he is going to go find out whether it was Shiv. When George and Archie go to Hamburg, they talk to a man who says nobody saw anything. Interpol is sending someone so they’re keeping the bodies on ice at the morgue.
Nobody else has come to see the bodies. Once they arrive, they find glass on the inside. The guy closest to the door was shot seven times in the chest. The people at the far end of the room were shot once in the head. They were mercenaries that worked mostly out of China and the Middle East. Whoever was in the other room fired at whoever came in on them. They suggest it might’ve been a rescue attempt and they went out the back door. They went out with the hostage. Archie finds a strand of hair outside. Back at the Lazarus Project office, George suggests it could be a coincidence until he learns that the hair belonged to Janet. There were four men killed at the scene and someone else too. A security camera captured a picture of former agent for the Ministry of State Security Zhang Rui on the morning of the shooting.
Wes admits it is going to be worse if the Chinese are involved. Moments later, Archie tells George she is going to go talk to some people alone since Wes wants to keep it small for now. On the next checkpoint night or June 30, 2024, George gets a call from Sarah who wants to meet with him. They agree to meet at the café tomorrow. Before midnight, George hears his door open so he grabs a gun. Shiv attacks him and the gun falls to the ground. George manages to get the gun and shoot Shiv in the chest. He tries to help, but it is too late. George finds a piece of paper or something in Shiv’s jacket. Reggie from next door comes over to check on George who says he was just watching a movie. After Reggie sees blood on George’s shirt, he quickly leaves. George drags the body to the elevator and takes it outside.
He drives the car to a private spot before setting it on fire. However, the explosion causes Shiv’s body to pop out near George. When he returns to his apartment, he realizes that he was supposed to meet with Sarah. He meets with her and learns that she has found someone else who she is going to marry. She hopes he doesn’t hate her although he thinks that would be much easier. George admits she could’ve told him in a text before leaving. He goes to the store to buy cleaning supplies and checks out pictures of Sarah with her new man. As he goes back to the apartment, he runs into Reggie. Then, he goes to his room and begins cleaning up the blood. After he finishes, he burns the paper he found on Shiv’s body. At work, George calls Archie and leaves a message asking how she is.
Later, he is confronted by DS Cooper who wants to ask about the reports of a disturbance that happened three weeks ago. He is told it would’ve been the night of June the 30th. George says he was at home. He is shown a picture of himself and the body in the lift and asked if he remembers using the lift. Cooper is going to arrest George, but time jumps back before he can. Shiv is shot and killed in George’s apartment.
The Lazarus Project Review
The Lazarus Project has likely continued for too long since the story is getting more and more contrived. It isn’t surprising that George didn’t get what he wanted, but everything else is hard to believe. It is impossible to imagine what is coming next because this episode felt like a new plot compared to the first six episodes.
A near flawless finale could likely make The Lazarus Project worthwhile through eight episodes, but it is easy to see many viewers stopping midway through. With other better shows coming out right now, it is easy to ignore this and watch something else. The episode scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of The Lazarus Project can be found on Reel Mockery here.
