The Last Of Us Season 2 Episode 1 Recap

Future Days – The episode begins with Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) promising Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) that what he said about the Fireflies was true. Elsewhere, the Fireflies are discussing what Joel did. Their plan is to head to Seattle and meet up with Ed’s brother. After that, finding and killing Joel will become their mission.

5 years after the events of last season, Joel and Ellie have moved to a community in Jackson, Wyoming. Ellie is shown training with some of the local boys while Joel teaches Dina (Isabela Merced) how to change the springs in a panel box. The training doesn’t get far because Dina asks Joel why Ellie is mad at him. He tells her that he assumes it is normal parent/teenager stuff. The conversation also alludes to Joel being in therapy, which he doesn’t want anyone to know.

Meanwhile, Ellie and Tommy Miller (Gabriel Luna) shoot at the Infected. Midway through their adventure, Tommy tells Ellie that he is taking her off patrol because Joel is concerned about her. Ellie gives Tommy a hard time until he changes his mind and puts her back on patrol.

Joel and Maria Miller (Rutina Wesley) are arguing about the slow construction when Tommy returns from his outing with Ellie. Maria reminds Joel that he too was a refugee.

After leaving Maria and Tommy, Joel goes to visit with Gail (Catherine O’Hara) and talk about how Ellie is shutting him out. Gail turns the tables on him and tells him that she is no longer going to validate him because he is not telling her the full truth. She also tells him that she hates him for killing her husband, Eugene (Joe Pantoliano) even though she knows he didn’t have an option. After telling him this, she tells him that he must now tell his truth. He tells Gail that he saved Ellie and gets up and walks out.

Ellie is at home cleaning her guns when Dina comes to pick her up for the run they are going on. Dina also mentions that she is going to watch some movies with Joel tomorrow night but Ellie doesn’t appear at all interested. Before the patrol, Jesse (Young Mazino) tells the group that they got reports of strays outside the town. If they encounter, they are not supposed to engage but return and report the incident so the town can send out another squad.

While on Patrol, Dina asks Ellie if she is going to the event in town later that night. Ellie tells her that she is. Dina asks if she is going to bring anyone. Ellie tells her that she isn’t bringing anyone. This is when Dina says that Ellie should consider bringing Kat (Noah Lamanna) because she is the only other one. When Ellie tells her no, Dina suspects she is into someone else. Before long, the patrol group comes up on a trail of blood that leads them to what appears to be an infected fight with a bear.

At the bear sight, there is a nearby market and Ellie suspects that there is an infected of two inside. By the time the other part of the patrol group shows up, Ellie and Dina have already decided to head in. Inside the market, Ellie makes a stealth kill. After reuniting with Dina she ends up falling through the floor. After Ellie falls they don’t initially see a way for her to get back up, so Dina decides to leave her and look for something to help get her out of the hole. Ellie is supposed to remain where she is.

Ellie doesn’t really pay attention and begins to wander around the bottom floor of the market. She eventually runs into an infected that actually runs from her. Ellie goes after it but it somehow ends up behind her. Ellie turns and takes a shot but the infected is no longer there. Just a second later, the infected attacks her from the side and Ellie loses her gun in the struggle. A hand-to-hand struggle ensues in which Ellie gets bit. After the infected bites her, it dies. Not long after that, Dina finds Ellie on the bottom floor.

Seconds later, Dina and Ellis are before the board, telling them about the new infected and how it reacted. Later that night, Ellie cuts and sews her bite. After this, Joel stops by Ellie’s garage to ask if she is coming to the community event. She tells him that she doesn’t know. He changes the subject when he notices that her guitar needs new strings.

Ellie joins Dina at the New Year’s party for a dance. They end up kissing and one of the partygoers, Seth (Robert John Burke) calls them out on it and refers to them as a derogatory term. Ellie almost calls him out on it until Joel steps in and pushes him down. This doesn’t end so well for Joel after Ellie tells him in front of everyone that she doesn’t need his help.

Later that night, Ellie returns home to find Joel on the front porch playing the guitar. She doesn’t say anything to him and proceeds to the garage. The episode ends with showing a group of people overlooking the town in Jackson as if they are going to attack it.

The Last Of Us Review

A very strong start to the season. I liked how Joel is being forced to work with Gail after killing her husband. I also like that Joel and Ellie are on the outs because it will take something powerful to bring them back together. What I didn’t like was how Ellie was being portrayed. I get her being fearless, I get her being reckless, but I do not get a world where she easily overpowers a guy twice her size. I am assuming the group at the end was the Fireflies. I couldn’t really tell because it was so dark. I’d have to give the episode a 6 out of 10.
