The Indian Doctor Review

indian doctor series

The Indian Doctor is a BBC drama, which aired from 2010 to 2013. The series spans over three seasons and contains a total of fifteen episodes. It is currently available on Hulu and those that enjoy the newer Indian Summers, will definitely want to check it out. During the show’s opening, we’re introduced to Dr. Prem Sharma (Sanjeev Bhaskar) and his wife, Kamini (Ayesha Dharker). The pair have relocated to a Welsh mining town, after the death of their daughter. Unfortunately, town is far from what they initially expected.

Upon arriving in the town, the duo quickly becomes introduced to a miner, Owen Griffiths (Ifan Huw Dafydd), Megan Evans (Mali Harries) and Gina Nicolli (Naomi Everson). Megan is going through turmoil with her miner husband, who has fallen ill. Gina, who worked with the previous doctor, quickly regains her old job and becomes Prem’s receptionist. The pair quickly have a run in with Owen’s son, Dan (Jacob Oakley), who is somewhat of a troublemaker. The head of the local mine, Richard Sharpe (Mark Williams). Sharpe becomes worried that Prem is going to discover something regarding the mine and the miner’s health. In order to prevent that from happening, he enlists the help of Dan to steal the previous doctor’s notebook from the clinic.

Unfortunately for Dan and Shapre, Dan is caught by Kamini. Fortunately for Dan, Kamini is very nice. In fact, she takes Dan under her wing and in return, she receives a reason to remain in the new city. Throughout the first season, Prem, Megan, Dan and Kamini work close together to unravel the mystery and bring a end to Sharpe’s reign of terror. Once you’ve managed to work your way through the first season, you’ll be hooked. It is truly no coincidence that the series was nominates for several awards and managed to pick up two.

There is so much to like about The Indian Doctor. The main characters are incredibly charismatic, realistic and likable. Each season begins along a new villain and it seems like they progressively worsen. Whether it is Sharpe, the crazy preacher, or the overzealous real estate developer, you’ll seethe with hate for each season’s bad guy. At the heart of the show, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Ayesha Dharker truly shine. The pair is absolutely dynamic and their chemistry is visible throughout.

The Indian Doctor might be a little bit predictable and cheesy, but it ultimately matters very little. The series is charming and a true treat. At times, it is emotional, but remains mainly cheerful and upbeat. If you’re looking for a brilliant BBC drama, which will keep you entertained and engrossed for the duration, you really cannot lose with The Indian Doctor. I have seen nothing regarding a renew or cancellation for the series, but it hasn’t budged an inch since 2013, so the future is grim. This is definitely unfortunately, because I would most certainly watch a 4th season of the show.

The series is great and deserves an 8.5 out of 10. Be sure to check it out for yourself right away, if you haven’t already!

  1. I would love to see more episodes of the Indian Doctor. Something different. I can’t figure why you would cancel. There are so many series that go on year after year, and are not nearly as entertaining as this show!

    1. Couldn’t agree more. So many terrible shows are continually renewed for really no good reason. More Indian Doctor and Indian Summers would have been appreciated.

  2. Just found this show when I signed on for Acorn TV. I love this show. The characters are great, warm, funny, loving and entertaining. I’ve seen 5 seasons and hope Acorn TV has the remaining 10. Looking so forward to seeing them. Sorry they are no longer producing this show. Too bad. We need more clean, entertaining shows like this. Thanks again from the U.S.

  3. I just watched all 3 seasons and desired more seasons and episodes! Quality programming, directing, writing at its best! Sometimes a new network with good programming non-dependent on AD revenues and ratings is warranted…. The downloads alone would support interest!

  4. I wondered what the crooks in the black car would do with all the properties Basil Thomas stole. What would the town become? Thank you for your time.
