As this episode of The Following Events Are Based On A Pack Of Lies begins, Alice Newman (Rebekah Staton) pulls Goblin out of the bag and finds an address on its tag. Alice calls her dad, Bill (Karl Johnson), to tell him about the dog. Alice is going to clean the car out so Juno doesn’t kill her. Then, she is going to take the dog to its owner and get her to tell the police what Robbie has done. They talk about Cheryl Harker (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) who is famous. Bill urges Alice to be careful since Cheryl might think she is a stalker. When Alice pulls the car out, the front bumper falls off.
Cheryl gets back home and she hopes the dog has returned. She finds the door open so she goes inside and calls for whoever is there. Rob Chance (Alistair Petrie) approaches and explains he came to get his dad’s cufflinks. Once Rob says he hasn’t seen Goblin, Cheryl goes looking for him upstairs. When Alice tries to take the dog back, she sees Rob near Cheryl’s door. She watches as Rob tries to send Regina (Sandra James-Young) and Danni (Sacharissa Claxton) away. They leave moments later. Alice watches Rob through the door before hiding when he approaches.
She puts the dog in the bin nearby and watches Rob who tells Cheryl he is going to take the dog to search in the woods. Once he is gone, Alice returns Goblin. Cheryl invites her inside because she wants to hear everything. Alice is surprised when Cheryl calls Rob her friend. She calls herself Juno Fish. Alice tells Cheryl that Goblin was drowning in the lake so she jumped in to save him. Cheryl thinks they’ve met since her name sounds familiar. She gives Alice one of her books. Alice stays around and they begin talking about Cheryl being a writer.
Cheryl reveals that Danni is a camera person on a television hospital drama. Her husband was ill for a few years so it is like he has been gone for a long time. Alice says her dad had a life-altering accident when she was 18. He struggled to walk and needed help going to the bathroom. Cheryl tells Alice about her fling with Rob and how she ended it. Rob postponed his flight to stick around and help Cheryl. She says a lot of people wouldn’t do that. Rob sits in his car and listens to Cheryl talk about her scholarship. Cheryl asks Alice about her cape. They look for Cheryl’s phone so she can call Rob and tell him about the dog.
When Cheryl steps out, Alice begins looking through Rob’s book. She finds a newspaper clip. Alice shuts the notebook when Cheryl returns and she is on the phone with Rob. After the call, Alice tries to rush out before Rob gets there. She passes Rob’s car and tells him she is going to get him on her way out. Rob is shocked when Cheryl tells him that the lady saved Goblin from drowning. Cheryl invites Rob to stay since he has been so helpful. Alice goes home and talks to Bill about Rob and the dog. Bill wonders if they should warn Cheryl. Alice says she was going to, but she was worried Cheryl wouldn’t believe her.
She could tell Rob and he could call Alice crazy. Alice says they need evidence of a pattern of what Rob is up to now. She suggests letting Rob do whatever he is going to do to Cheryl is their only way. After Rob gets off the phone, Cheryl questions what Goblin was doing near that lake. She tells him about “Juno” who she describes as a bit odd. Rob asks if Juno could’ve kidnapped the dog just to get a reward. Cheryl doesn’t believe someone could think of something like that. She gets a message from Danni telling her about the visit. Rob says two women came around when Cheryl was upstairs screaming.
He claims he thought they were people from work, but he didn’t mean to upset Cheryl’s friends and family. Cheryl insists she’ll be fine. Rob thinks Cheryl deserves some fun after everything she has gone through. In the middle of the night, Alice looks at Cheryl’s book while Rob searches through her dresser. In the morning, Rob says on the phone that he is moving on to phase three. Cheryl wakes up in bed alone. She speaks to Rob and they agree that he can stay for a bit longer. Bill tells Alice that he’ll deal with Unwin and she can call Harker. Alice receives a call from Juno (Romola Garai). When she goes to work, she is scolded for not picking up Poppy and wrecking the car.
Juno pleads with her not to take advantage of her good nature. Alice takes the drugs she found in Juno’s vehicle and puts them in the cabinet under her desk. Cheryl and Rob discuss whether he ever thought about getting married. He claims he never met the one and he has been too dedicated to work. Cheryl suggests it is just a matter of finding the right person. She receives a call from Alice pretending to be Juno. Alice says she thought about making her an outfit that she can wear to an event to promote her brand. Cheryl says she doesn’t really do events.
Once Cheryl agrees to do it, Alice says she’ll text her the address to the design studio. After the call, Cheryl tells Rob about it. Then, she wonders what happened to Lance’s chair. Cheryl meets Alice moments later. Bill catches up with Ralph Unwin (Derek Jacobi) to talk to him about Dr. Robert Chance. They go inside where Unwin tells Bill about Photoshop. Alice speaks to Cheryl while taking her measurements. As they discuss Rob, Cheryl says they’re just having fun. She is glad Rob stopped talking about meeting his mother. That night, Bill shows Alice the paperwork Rob is giving to potential investors.
Alice suspects it is the same scam as before. She still needs to prove they’re his and that people have invested. When Alice discusses the possibility of going back for Rob’s notebook, Bill thinks they’re getting in over their heads. Alice insists they won’t let anything bad happen to Cheryl. Meanwhile, Rob and Cheryl talk about one of the students up for the scholarship. Rob says he’d love to come with her and meet one of them, but Cheryl isn’t sure that is appropriate. While Rob changes his shirt, Cheryl notices scars on his back. He gets emotional so Cheryl asks if there is something he’d like to talk about it. Rob explains that his mom was difficult and possibly even abusive so he finds what Cheryl is doing very moving.
Rob gets to tag along when Cheryl meets the student the following day. Cheryl and the student hear Rob laughing with the mother in the other room. As they leave, Rob suggests she has to be the one. Cheryl says the other one is equally good so it’ll be difficult to choose. He suggests they can pick both. Cheryl speaks to the others about it. When they mention that they don’t have money, Cheryl tells them about the Saattut Academy while Rob listens discreetly nearby. If Gideon College can bring 50% of the funding for the second student, Saattut will come on board as a cosponsor and match their generous donation.
Later, Rob gives Cheryl a receipt for the 50,000 pounds needed. Norman Niedecker (Donald Sage Mackay) talks about Terry’s business and how it was supposedly able to reverse the aging process. Norman’s mom showed him the website and he found all kinds of research. They thought their mom’s $2 million would soon turn into $50 million. Alice works on the dress for Cheryl. Later, Cheryl meets Alice and tells her what Rob has done. Cheryl feels optimistic for the first time in a long time. She admits she feels guilty because it is so far while Danni is suspicious. Cheryl thinks Rob has scars from his childhood. She reveals that Danni and Regina are coming over on Wednesday night.
She made it clear that Rob is not allowed to be there. When Danni and Regina visit, Rob is there. During the visit, they briefly talk about a possible television adaptation of Cheryl’s work. Danni talks about her travel and the wooly mammoths. Rob claims he was asked to advise on the impact of climate change on them, but Danni says they are safe in a museum. Rob excuses himself. Alice asks Benjy (Julian Barratt) if she can take the van since she is running late. Cheryl tells Danni and Regina that she doesn’t know why she has to keep justifying it. She tries on Alice’s cape moments later. Cheryl explains she was going to wear it to her scholarship announcement dinner.
While Alice is there, she tries to find evidence she can use against Rob. She finds his notebook. Before she can leave, she sees Rob and he sees her. She begins freaking out and telling Cheryl that she should really go. Rob catches up with them and is introduced to Juno. He doesn’t seem to remember Alice.
The Following Events Are Based On A Pack Of Lies Review
The second episode of The Following Events Are Based On A Pack Of Lies was enjoyable although slightly irritating at times. The story remains unique and interesting. Some of the scenes are gripping since there is always a chance that Alice could get caught trying to collect evidence against Rob. The performances are great although Rebekah Staton’s character allows her to showcase her skills more than some of the others.
It is also fun to watch Alice and Bill work together to get justice. On the other hand, it is a bit annoying that Alice isn’t going to tell Cheryl anything. It just doesn’t seem like the route she is taking is the most logical, but the story may not be as interesting otherwise. Nevertheless, that is slightly annoying.
Regardless, the series has been fresh and enjoyable so I am looking forward to the next episode to see where things go next. This episode scores a 6.5 out of 10.
