The episode begins with Iris West (Candice Patton) speaking about Barry and his secret, before Barry (Grant Gustin) and Joe are grilled by the Captain about Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett). Iris reports the Man in Yellow’s behavior to Barry. Despite Iris’s concerns, Barry insists The Flash is likely doing everything he can. A bunch of United States transport vehicles, which are loaded with gold, are attacked, before Barry speaks to Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes). Barry arrives at the attack site and confronts the armed man, before flashbacks prevent him from moving forward.
Back at the lab, Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) inspects Barry. Cisco brings up surveillance video, which shows the armed man also being disoriented. Iris enters and confronts Barry about his secret. Cisco and Caitlin decide the listen in, as Barry speaks to Iris. Iris insists she is disappointed, as Barry confirms Eddie knew about his abilities. He also exposes the truth about Wells. Barry reveals that Joe (Jesse L. Martin) knew and convinced him to keep it a secret from Iris, before she gets mad and storms out.
Meanwhile, Dr. Wells (Tom Cavanagh) returns to Eddie and refuses to answer any questions. Wells transforms into the Reverse Flash and shuts him up. At the newspaper office, Joe speaks to Iris and receives the cold shoulder. Joe insists he was only trying to keep Iris safe, but his excuse only makes her angrier. Barry tells Cisco and Caitlin about another gold shipment. An ice cream truck is shown transporting the gold, before the man in the mask disables it. Barry arrives and saves Joe. They remove the man’s mask and it turns out to be General Wade Eiling (Clancy Brown).
Eiling is inspected at the lab and he seems to be in a trance. Cisco reveals Eiling has been missing for three months. Eiling insists Eiling is bad and he hurt Eiling. He finally admits that he is Grodd (David Sobolov). It is revealed that Eiling and Wells created Grodd, who escaped after the explosion. Joe says they need to find Grodd, which will lead them to Wells. Iris enters and agrees to help. The group decides to hit the sewers. Back at the lab, Iris speaks to Caitlin about her fiancé. The group finds drawings on the sewer walls. It seems Grodd is evolving and growing smarter.
Barry has another flashback and hits the ground, before Joe is snagged from above. Joe is separated from the pack and pulls out his handgun. However, Grodd is capable of manipulating his actions and forcing him to turn the gun on himself. Joe speaks to Grodd about his father, Wells. Joe tries the banana and fails miserably. Barry’s brain waves are inspected back at the lab. Iris runs off, after complaining about STAR Labs being unable to save Eddie and her father.
Iris argues with Barry about his secrecy. Barry insists Iris has been keeping secrets of her own, before he returns to Cisco and Caitlin. Meanwhile, Eddie speaks to Wells and confidently says Barry and group will find him. Wells tells Eddie that he is a failure. He insists Eddie is the only Thawne to be forgotten and reveals Eddie doesn’t even get the girl. Wells shows him the newspaper report and tells him that Barry marries Iris, before he throws Eddie’s ring to the side. Caitlin and Cisco have created Barry a device, which prevents his brain from being manipulated, before he rushes off.
Cisco and Caitlin use steam to fill the sewer, so Barry can super punch and kill Grodd. This time, Grodd avoids the attack and Barry is forced to fight. Barry is thrown through a wall and loses his headset. Iris speaks to Barry and brings him back to reality, before he jumps out of the way of the train and attacks Grodd. Grodd is hit by one of the trains, before Barry rescues Joe. Barry returns to Eiling, who has returned to his normal self. Barry insists the General will get what he deserves eventually. Eiling reveals he knows Barry’s secret and has for awhile. He suggests both need to bring down Wells.
Joe recovers in the hospital, as Cisco batters him with questions about Grodd. Iris and Joe speak alone. The pair negotiate and get back to good terms, before Caitlin returns to Barry, who insists Joe was right and Grodd was a distraction. Caitlin reveals that the four of them can do anything. Barry meets Iris in their usual spot and tells her that she helped him down in the sewers. He insists there wouldn’t be a Flash without Iris. She finally reveals the truth regarding her feelings, but still maintains her loyalty to Eddie. Grodd is shown climbing and jumping from a building, before Wells builds some type of concoction, which he insists is the key. Wells inserts the key and says it is time to go home.
Review
Grodd Lives was a good episode for The Flash. As much as I, and everyone else, likes to hate on Iris, the romance wasn’t too cheesy or barf worthy. Barry will likely end up with Iris, so we might as well get used to it. Either way, who really cares? The episode was good and deserves a 7.5 out of 10.
