As the second series of The Ex-Wife begins, there’s a showdown between Jen (Katie McGrath) and Tasha (Celine Buckens). It looks like Jen may shoot Tasha. After the intro, Tasha rides on a boat with Lucy and celebrates her birthday. Tasha possibly sees someone before leaving in a hurry. When she returns, she’s told the rent is due today. Tasha promises to have it tomorrow. Tasha uses the computer again. She finds multiple emails from Sam (Jordan Stephens) who wants to know where she is. Tasha finds newspaper articles about a media executive being jailed after the death of his daughter. She is in Larnaca, Cyprus. Jack (Tom Mison) says he’s Emily’s dad and he killed her. At HMP Wormwood Scrubs, he tells a woman that he can be the kind of dad Emily would be proud of. When he mentions Jen, he’s reminded she’s his ex-wife. Jack still says she’s the love of his life.
He knows she’d be better off without him. The woman gets him to talk about his current wife, Tasha. Jack hopes she’s managed to find peace wherever she may be. Tasha hangs out with her daughter. Hayley (Clare Foster) is with Jen who is trying on a wedding dress in London. Jen takes a call from someone and seems distraught. She tells Hayley she should’ve told her. Hayley says it wasn’t confirmed until the official appeal today. She reminds Jen that she’s with Connor now. Meanwhile, Tasha hangs out with Lucy on the beach. They play for a while until Tasha says she has to go to work. Jen speaks to Sam (Jordan Stephens) on the phone about Jack getting time served on appeal. Sam admits he doesn’t know where Tasha is. Jen thinks she might need to start thinking about her options. Sam reminds her that he’s a psychopath. Tasha tells Lucy they can come back for ice cream after work. She’s worried that she sees someone in the distance.
Tasha tells Lucy they’re going to play the hiding game. While they’re hiding, Lucy decides to get her stuffed animal. Tasha realizes the man is not Jack. Jack is released and immediately moves in with Hayley. He sits alone and looks at pictures of Emily. Jack calls Johnny to see if he can find Tasha. Meanwhile, Tasha and Lucy go to a big house. Connor (Jake Fairbrother) tells Jen that Giles in the law department will apply for a restraining order tomorrow. Connor will do whatever he must to keep her safe. He says he feels sorry for Jack since he lost his kid and he did it. Tasha goes to another house to clean. She tells Leo (Andreas Teselepos) why she had to bring her daughter. Tasha cleans while Lucy sits with the other kids. At one point, Leo interrupts because his wife wants a word with her. He says they’d prefer someone who doesn’t bring their children with them. Tasha pleads with him to change his mind. Leo gives her a little money to try to smooth things over. While Tasha is alone, she looks at Leo’s money but doesn’t take any.
Jen finds out that Jack has sent her flowers. Connor thinks he’s crossed the line. Jen asks him not to do anything. Hayley tells Jack about Connor who is perfect for her. Jack says he has someone on Tasha’s case. Hayley argues he’ll never be free of Tasha until they’re divorced. Jack can’t pretend that Emily never existed. Connor arrives at the door and asks to speak to Jack. When they’re alone, Connor tells Jack what Jen said about the crash and the moment she realized he was capable of killing. She finally slept soundly until Jack sent her those flowers. Connor asks why he sent them. He insists Jen is never coming back to him. Connor threatens to have him sent back to prison if he contacts her again. Jack thanks Connor for looking after her for him. Jen interrupts. Connor calls Jack a freak before he leaves. Jack says Jen dreams about him. Tasha pays half of her rent and promises to get the rest. She says she’s expecting a payment. Tasha checks her messages from Sam and learns that Jack is out.
When she calls him later, Sam insists Jack is not going to come after her. Sam offers to help her with money. Tasha doesn’t want to tell him where she is. She also doesn’t think they’d work now. Although Sam admits Jen is shaken, he insists it’s totally fine. Sam asks her to pass a message to Lucy since he was a dad to the girl for two years. He also asks for Tasha’s number in case he hears anything. Connor makes it home and apologizes to Jen for being weird about the flowers. He admits it’s better to just ignore Jack. Tasha calls Jan to ask if she’s seen him. She wants to make sure Jack doesn’t know about Emily. Jen says she’s not in contact with him and doesn’t plan on being. Jack confronts Sam at his workplace in the middle of the night. Jack says he wants to do the right thing by Tasha. Sam says she wants nothing from him. Jack says she wants a divorce and he wants her to have half of everything. Then, she never has to see him again. Jack says he would choose to die in that crash instead of Emily. He goes on to say that Tasha cannot run away from what happened forever.
Sam says the best thing to do is to leave her alone. Jack says he will once things are done between them. Sam doesn’t want to give him any way to contact her. He asks Jack to leave now. When Jack leaves, Sam immediately messages Tasha to warn her that Jack is looking for her. Tasha rushes to get packed. She tells Lucy it’ll be an adventure. They run for the car and try to avoid the landlord. The landlord sees Tasha and threatens to call the police on her. While Jen is out shopping with Connor, she sees Jack nearby. He urges her to remain quiet. Jack watches them when they leave. Tasha goes back to Leo’s place and claims her daughter left something there. Leo agrees to let her look around. While she’s in the house, she steals a lot of Leo’s money. Tasha leaves moments later. It appears Tasha is going to try to sneak on a boat. Tasha makes it through the passport check. It appears her vehicle is pulled to the side to be checked. Lucy is ready to come out.
Tasha quickly turns around and flees. Jen calls Connor and makes an excuse for being late. She meets Jack moments later. He immediately kisses her.
The Ex-Wife Review
The opening episode of The Ex-Wife was decent overall although nothing groundbreaking. Jack managed to find a way to get out of prison while Tasha remained on the run with his daughter. Jen is moving forward with Connor, but that may be interrupted by Jack’s release.
The performances are mostly good although the story isn’t all that believable. Tasha’s actions are extreme so it’s hard to see how that’s going to work out well in the long run. It’ll be interesting to see how far she’s pushed as Jack tries to hunt her down.
One funny thing is how Tasha managed to steal all of that money despite having nowhere to put it. She had to have stuck that wad of cash down her shorts. It’s hard to complain about too much when the series is only four episodes and it can be breezed through in a few hours.
It helps that none of the characters are very sympathetic so anything can happen and no one will complain. The episode scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of The Ex-Wife can be found here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link.
