As the episode opens, Harry Lonergan (Colin Morgan) and Robin Lonergan (Toni O’Rourke) arrive at Cozimo’s (Simon Callow) place where a party is going on. Cozimo guarantees they will never want to leave his paradise. In a flashback, Harry and Robin are digging through rubble when he sees a boy holding a stuffed animal. Upon leaving, the boy waves at Harry. Robin turns but doesn’t see anything. They continue digging through the rubble. Back in the present, Harry asks Robin if she is still on board with the paint scheme for the bathroom. She says marine splash. Smiling, he reminds her that they have agreed on lemon spirit. Upon leaving, he insists on getting the renovation project done before their baby is born. After getting the paint, Harry calls Cozimo to tell him about seeing Dillon (Emily O’Neill) in Dublin. Cozimo claims to have seen Dillon and a red-headed woman with the seahorses this morning. He insists Harry pick Dillon up. Harry asks if Dillon was in Morocco when the call abruptly ends. He redials the number but Cozimo doesn’t answer.
Harry informs Ollie (Kerr Logan) of his plan to go away and not explain to Robin why. Ollie refuses to cover for Harry and pleads with him to not go through with it. Harry reminds him that he owes him for keeping his secrets. Ollie demands to know why he is going away. A short time later, Harry returns home to find Robin working on her model. He tells her that Peter has invited him to take part in his impending show. She is thrilled with the news.
Harry hides his phone between the sofa cushions before leaving for Morocco. Upon arriving in Essaouira, Harry utilizes a spare key to access Cozimo’s riad where he finds him watering his plants. Cozimo embraces Harry. Cozimo agrees to take him where he saw Dillon and the red-headed lady. Nurse Kadiri (Roaa Idali) becomes frantic when she finds Cozimo missing. Zensa (Aizam Razouali) sees Cozimo and Harry passing the market. A man and woman block the road causing Harry and Cozimo to get separated. Zensa is on the phone. Harry doesn’t see Cozimo anywhere. In Dublin, Robin is working at home. A news reporter, Rachel provides an update on Storm Minnie on the radio playing in the background. Concerned about Harry, Robin sends him a text asking if he reached Belfast okay. A text alert pings on Harry’s phone hidden in the sofa. She texts Ollie. He immediately calls her. She tells him about Harry forgetting to take his phone with him to Belfast. He assures her that Harry will be all right. She recalls going to the Hairy Goat Pub while visiting Belfast. He urges her to not call the pub but she ignores him. Ollie races out of the house.
Harry finds Cozimo on the beach. Cozimo embraces him. Harry asks him about the red-headed lady. Cozimo appears confused before blurting out Dillon is dead. Jalila and Zensa arrive. Harry tries to explain that he is a friend of Cozimo’s. Jalila accuses him to removing Cozimo from his home and refuses to say what is wrong with him. Harry grabs Cozimo’s shoes. In Dublin, Robin is preparing food when Ollie stops by. She is surprised to learn that Ollie knows about her upcoming project pitch. He says Harry told him. She recalls he denied talking to Harry before informing him that the gallery isn’t expecting Harry and Peter retired a year ago. He tells her that Harry went to Morocco about a sighting of Dillon. Insisting they get Harry away from Morocco, she races upstairs to pack. When she reaches for a bag, a pile of luggage falls. He intervenes to keep the luggage from hitting her. She admits to being pregnant. In Essaouira, Harry looks at an old photo of him and Robin at Cozimo’s party. Jalila tells him that Cozimo was diagnosed with vascular dementia after suffering several strokes. She claims Cozimo has mentioned seeing Dillon.
Robin assures Ollie that the baby is fine and insists on going to Essaouira. She says Harry isn’t well. He promises to bring Harry home. In Essaouira, an intoxicated Harry nearly steps out in front of a motorbike. He approaches Fadoul Kadiri (Mansour Badri) in a pub. Fadoul urges him to go to bed. Harry says the search for Dillon shouldn’t have been called off. Fadoul threatens to arrest him. Harry knocks over their table. Fadoul threatens to lock him up.
Upon arriving in Essaouira, Ollie visits Cozimo’s place and speaks with Jalila who gives him a paper that Harry left. Ollie dials the phone number and Fadoul answers. A short time later, Ollie races into the police station. A man stares at him. In a flashback, Driss (Nasser Akabab) continues to watch Ollie as he buys some drugs. A police officer (Mehdi Pyro) hits Ollie after he leaves the pub. Harry is painting a short distance away when he hears the commotion. The officer searches Ollie and finds the drugs. Harry realizes it is Ollie as the officers cart him off to jail. Back in the present, Ollie visits the jail to see Harry. Fadoul Ollie that Harry assaulted an officer. Harry admits to being intoxicated. Ollie pleads with Fadoul to release Harry because his pregnant wife is concerned about his welfare. Fadoul says his sister and her children died during the earthquake. Ollie tries to bribe him with money but Fadoul refuses. He calls Robin to update her on their situation. Robin retrieves her passport.
In Essaouira, Robin meets Ollie. They speak with Samira (Fatima Ezzahra El Jaouhari) about Harry’s arrest. Samira claims Fadoul is still upset about a demotion. Robin says Harry attacked Fadoul when the search for Dillon was called off. Fadoul became irate and threw them out of his office. Harry filed a complaint against Fadoul. Samira informs her that Ollie offered Fadoul money to release Harry. She says no charges have been filed against Harry. A short time later, Robin visits Harry in jail. He tells her that Cozimo claims to have seen Dillon with a red-headed woman but he has dementia. She Samira is going to get him released. After visiting hours are over, she meets Ollie outside the station. He suggests they return to the hotel. She utilizes an excuse to go to Cozimo’s place. In a flashback, Robin and Harry dance. She goes off to be alone when she encounters David Garrick (Cillian O’Sullivan) at Cozimo’s party. He asks if she is okay. She claims she’s just tired. Robin admits Harry always has a good time. Back in the present, She thinks about Dillon and returns to the police station where Samira warns her that Fadoul is about to change his mind. She takes them to Fadoul and hands him a phone. Fadoul tells the caller that this guy is always looking for trouble and he’s just doing his job. After the call, he says well played. Samira tells Ollie and Robin that she went to school with the commissioner’s daughter. He’s going to release Harry. Fadoul tells Harry that he’s not for sale and never was. He threatens to put him behind bars and keep him there if he sees him again. It appears someone follows them when they leave.
At the motel, Harry learns that they’re not going to stay and look for Dillon. In private, Robin tells Harry that the guy has dementia and lives in the past. She pleads with Harry to let it go and come home with her. Ollie finds a man waiting for him. He drops the bags and tries to flee. Driss manages to catch him. Ollie is thrown into the back of a van and assaulted.
The Boy That Never Was Review
The series is obviously low-budget. The cinematography is decent but the editing is so bad it interferes with the flow of the story. There is no break between the present-day and flashback scenes. The plot is becoming more implausible by the episode.
Colin Morgan and Kerr Logan are outstanding in their roles as Harry and Ollie. I don’t see an opportunity for improvement but the story is intriguing enough to see it through to the end. The episode deserves a 5.6 out of 10.
