Slypharis – The episode opens at Lake Rovere, with Malik (George Quinos) and Zoe (Christina Ward) arriving for a picnic. She admires her two-carat diamond ring. He grabs a lunch basket out of the trunk when Hollis (Jean Claude Leuyer) arrives in a lift truck to do some fishing. Malik approaches him, says they were recently engaged, and asks if he would mind giving them an hour of privacy. Hollis tells him the lake is public property. Malik offers to buy him mud flaps but not to be a “dick.” Hollis backhands him. A struggle ensues. Zoe urges Malik to stop when a demon appears and blows out a tire on the Mercedes. Malik and Hollis stop fighting. Pressure builds up in the lift truck tires until they pop, sending Zoe flying across the lot. She gets to her feet, rushes over to the truck, and finds Malik and Hollis’s mangled bodies underneath it. Their heads turn toward her. She screams in terror. At The Boxcar, Trish (K.D. O’Hair) asks Lucky Callahan (Damon Herriman) if he is all right. He claims to be peachy and tosses his recovery token in the tip jar. The line cook (Brandon Alston) asks if he wants to cancel the Hog Roast Hoe Down because of what happened. Raising his voice, Callahan alleges Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon) framed him but it didn’t work. He says anyone who thinks he is defeated can leave like Maryanne Dice (Jennifer Nettles). Cheryl Dawson’s missing person poster catches his eye. He offers to buy Trish’s truck.
Halloran finds Kitty Halloran (Beth Grant) sleeping with a “Complete Demonology” novel. He spots his height measurements on a wall. He covers Kitty up. She sleepily mutters, “Goodnight, Ed. Love you.” Halloran picks up the novel, rips out a page with an inverted pentagram, and pins it on a wall map. While arranging papers on a board, flashes of his cases pop up in his mind. He adds, index cards with fire and air to the board, and connects the stick pins with a string. He appears shocked by what he sees.
9 Years Ago – Midge Kusatsu (Jolene Purdy) bakes pastries for a party. Hannah Kusatsu (Shelli Delgado) hands her a glass of champagne. Yuki “Joe” Kusatsu (Stan Egi) congratulates Midge for being named Atlanta’s best new pastry chef. The room fills with cheers. Joe expresses his disapproval of Midge’s past career choices and is happy she found something she is good at. She professes to love him. Hannah proposes a toast to Love Bites. Aiko Kusatsu (Ren Hanami) panics when Benji Kusatsu (Drexel Malkoff) stops breathing. Midge takes her ashen baby and urges him to breathe. Later, Midge speaks to a healthcare insurance representative on the phone about Benji’s leukemia. She stresses the importance of him getting treatment without delay. The representative says the treatment is not covered under her Bronze Plan. Later, Midge has a yard sale to raise cash. Aiko informs Midge that Benji is refusing to eat. Midge pleads with her to keep trying. A bargain hunter (Nikkita Johnson) pays $150 for a $900 marble rolling pin to help Midge out. Midge realizes she is nowhere near reaching the $87k needed to cover Benji’s treatment. Later, Midge searches for ways to sell her kidney when she sees a Pot O’ Gold ad for family medical benefits. A leprechaun flies across the screen saying, “When hardships weight heavy and life’s but a frog…” The application pops up on the screen. As Midge fills it out, the screen flashes and the leprechaun says, “Fill me out to sell your soul.” She submits the application.
Midge is repotting plants when a van, boasting a license “K3RMIE” pulls in front of her house. A flashy Ali “Cosmo” Khan” approaches and introduces himself. Sunshine (Kimberly Maxwell) fills a cart with files. Midge informs them that she has no money. Cosmo claims Pot O’ Gold saved him from going to the gallows and got him hitched to Sunshine 54 years ago. He asks her to blow him a kiss. Midge asks if the Pot O’ Gold Corporate Plan will cover Benji’s treatment. He assures her it will. While hooking up a fax machine, Cosmo asks her to tell no one about Pot O’ Gold. He explains the specifics of her new recruiting job and quota. She suggests it is a pyramid scheme. He describes it as “multilevel marketing.” After signing the form, she puts her thumb near the inkpad, and a pin stabs it. She puts her bloody thumbprint in the box. Cosmo hurriedly faxes the form. The house fills with dark music. She can now see beyond the veil and marks appear on her inner forearm. He holds out his arm to show her his marks.
In the present, Midge and Benji press flowers in a mythology book. She insists on his attending Hannah’s book club meeting. Halloran rings the doorbell. She retrieves a gun from a safe, cocks it, and orders him to get off her porch. He tells her about finding a pattern with the sacrifices. She demands he call the hotline. He refuses because the 1-900 number costs $10 per minute. He asks if she got mixed up with Pot O’ Gold when Benji got sick. She argues that he knows nothing about her. He says she is the PTA president, a charity volunteer, and a church deacon. He suggests she is seeking redemption. She admits to collecting signatures before showing her the marks on her inner forearm. She explains how Benji’s cancer returned when she tried to quit. He apologizes and tries to show her the pattern. Wanting nothing to do with it, she recalls he was sent to hell. Not her, she chose it for love. He says she needs to get off her high horse because they are both going to hell. She accuses him of roping Kitty into it and insists what she did and is still doing is protecting Benji. She threatens to send him back to hell if he doesn’t leave now. He drops the file on the porch and leaves.
During a phone call, Halloran tells Kitty about Midge’s situation. She suggests Midge is being forced to do things she never thought possible. Realizing she is referring to herself, he apologizes for getting her involved and thanks her. She informs him of a Slypharis demon breaking through at Lake Rovere. When his phone pings, he suggests Maryanne is thinking about him. She calls him a cheapskate for remaining on Maryanne’s GPS phone tracking plan. Upon arriving at Lake Rovere, Halloran finds Hollis’ truck on its side, Zoe’s purse and phone inside the Mercedes, and a spilled picnic basket on the ground. A raven croaks as it takes flight. Halloran calls Kitty and says the Slypharis demons are traveling east because “air” is on the right side of the pentagram. He explains how he is going to draw them to him. Later, Halloran is sitting in his truck when he sees Hollis and Malik crossing a bridge in his direction. A frantic Zoe pleads with them. Flipping on the spotlight, he looks through his scope and sees Hollis carrying Zoe. He shoots Malik. Hollis drops Zoe. Halloran shoots him. Malik jumps up on the metal frame. Hollis holds a flailing Zoe in front of him. Malik climbs up the frame. Halloran shoots him. A truck crashes into him, sending his vehicle rolling over. A raven caws. He slowly climbs out of his overturned vehicle, crawls across the ground, and reaches for his rifle. Callahan steps on his arm and stomps his foot.
