Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) takes Neil (Matty Matheson) and Ted (Ricky Staffieri) outside to break down boxes. Ted worries it could be a haunt. He goes on to say Claire is ticked off at Carmy who doesn’t think Claire would haunt them. He admits he thinks about Claire every day. Ted and Neil urge him to apologize to Claire. Carmy admits she might be haunting him. Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) tries to practice speaking to someone about her decision. Then, they’re in the kitchen with Carmy yelling at everyone to move faster.

Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) asks for a hold, but Carmy refuses to give him one. As the situation worsens, Richie tells Carmy to teach his people how to cook faster. Carmy says he’s sick of this. After the service, Carmy and the others begin cleaning in silence. Richie has an invitation to Tiffany and Frank’s wedding. Gary “Sweeps” Woods (Corey Hendrix) joins him and they talk about how long the day felt. Richie learns they missed a birthday. They agree not to do that going forward. Carmy tells Sydney and expo is killing them. He believes tonight was off. Sydney says it’s been off. Carmy apologizes for the millionth time. Sydney wanted to run something by him, but she changes her mind and says it can wait. Carmy says they’re closed tomorrow night.

It’s the Ever funeral service. Carmy invites Sydney to come. She doesn’t think it’s her place to be there, but Carmy still thinks she should come. Sydney agrees to come. Carmy doesn’t want it to be so hard to keep up with him. She leaves moments later. Carmy puts his forehead against the freezer door. He goes into the freezer. He contemplates calling Claire, but he leaves the freezer without calling her. Sydney looks at articles about Carmy before receiving a call from her dad. She doesn’t answer it. Tina (Liza Colon-Zayas) finds Marcus working on things when they’re not too busy. She is there for the same reason. Gary arrives to work on the grapes. Carmy sees Uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt) with his golf clubs.

Jimmy explains he’s flying out to Seattle tonight and doesn’t want to leave them in the car. They talk about the upcoming review and how they’ve been thinking about it a lot. Jimmy says he went to a lecture series at U of Chicago. He says dreams start from a place of passion. The lecture was called “The Day Tomorrow Began”. It’s all about breakthroughs in science and culture and how they’re born from people in Chicago. Jimmy tells him about carbon dating. He believes a person can change the world if they have a place like the university that will keep them financed. Jimmy says he can’t get killed. If they get a bad review, he’s going to cut the string. Jimmy reveals that Carmy’s mom wants him to call her about the baby. Carmy has been avoiding it and hoping it’d go away.

Jimmy admits he wishes he had done more with his mom and Michael sometimes. He could’ve tried. Carmy argues he wasn’t there either. Jimmy doesn’t think he could’ve done anything although Carmy says he could’ve tried. They’re even except for the 850 thousand dollars Carmy owes him. When Jimmy leaves, a man in his car doesn’t think he told Carmy. He wants Jimmy to tell Carmy that he can’t cover his shorts. He should give him a deadline and tell him he loves him. He believes it’d be better for Jimmy to experience what it’s like to be poor so he can develop empathy. Jimmy tells him where to go. Richie speaks to Tiffany about her job. She mentions that the kids are still kind of messed up from COVID. Richie claims he RSVP’d although she says he didn’t. She’d like him to come because he’s like the only family she has left.

Richie asks if Tiffany told Eva he’s alone. Tiffany didn’t know what to say. Richie explains he doesn’t want her worrying about him. Tiffany reveals she saw Claire who told her everything Carmy said to her. She urges Richie to RSVP. Tina practices cooking. When Marcus joins her, she asks him if he ever gets lost in a plate. He does every day. Marcus says her dish is good before confirming he’s okay. He gives her advice for enhancing the dish. Carmen looks through dishes. Ted and Neil prepare to go to the hospital. They don’t think it’ll hurt to say a few things on Carmy’s behalf. They agree they’re good guys. Sydney surprises Pete (Chris Witaske) by showing up with food. He admits he’s feeling grateful. Pete says Natalie said he needed to look through that thing. Sydney says he doesn’t.

He ends up telling her that the salary of 70 a year is good as well as a couple of bonuses. Insurance is available after three months. Neil and Ted try to find Claire (Molly Gordon). Once Neil finds her, he says Carmy doesn’t know how to tell her so he’s stuck. He believes Carmy loves her. Ted interrupts and complains about Neil leaving him. Together, they try to talk Claire into giving Carmy another chance. Natalie looks at the baby. She takes a picture of it and possibly sends it to Carmy.

The Bear Review

This episode of The Bear was decent overall although it feels very long-winded. Many scenes drag out with the characters saying the same things repeatedly. On the other hand, there are long scenes in which nothing really happens and viewers are just staring at the characters. The series has set up a handful of storylines for the finale, including Sydney possibly leaving, the review, and Jimmy potentially cutting the string to the business.

While this was a fairly decent episode, it really didn’t do anything out of the ordinary either. Without the chaos that made the series so unique, it’s just rehashing topics from other shows. The characters could be stronger with some being portrayed as unrealistically dumb and others unhinged.

The dialogue needs a lot of improvements. Truthfully, it just seems the series has fundamentally changed and dropped everything that made it a hit in the first place. A strong finale could right the ship and potentially make season three between than the second though. This episode scores a 6 out of 10.
