Detours – As the third episode of Sullivan’s Crossing begins, Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) wakes up next to Andrew. He tells her he has to get back because there is a backlog of surgeries. Andrew suggests she can come back with him, but Maggie says she feels safer there. She says she has friends there as well. When asked about Cal (Chad Michael Murray), Maggie says she just met him. Andrew questions whether she always lets random men walk her home. Maggie argues he was just making sure she got home safe. She reminds him that she isn’t his ex-wife. As Maggie decides to go for a run, she tells Andrew that she’ll call a taxi for him.
Andrew goes downstairs and asks Sully (Scott Patterson) about coffee. He apologizes for showing up late and says he’d have to buy a bigger bed if he visits often. Andrew admits he couldn’t picture Maggie growing up there. They talk about Andrew not being a camping fan before he says he is leaving today for work. Andrew explains he is a general surgeon. Maggie comes down moments later to tell Andrew that the taxi will be there in a minute. Before he leaves, he tells Maggie that he didn’t mean what he said. Andrew confesses it is hard not to be jealous after what his wife did. He pleads with Maggie to forgive him before he leaves. She does and asks him not to do it again.
Scott calls Maggie and tells her that the mom is threatening to sue her for harassment now. He reminds her that calling her house last night was a bad move. Scott is just thankful that she didn’t take the call. Rob (Reid Price) speaks to Finn who wants to see him play. Rob reveals he is going to have to help Lola so he won’t be able to come. Finn (Zayn Maloney) isn’t happy about it because Rob never comes to his games. Maggie goes to the restaurant to speak to Sydney who says Sully isn’t going to have the party there. Maggie doesn’t understand that because he always has the party there. Sydney recommends talking to Lola since she is organizing it. She admits she had a late night and Rafe (Dakota Taylor) is nice.
It is just what she needs because there are no strings, no commitments, and no complications. Sydney wants to know about her night since she walked home with Cal. Maggie tells her about Andrew. Sydney tells her to get changed and meet her at the utility shed because they’re going to do something to cheer her up. Cal helps Sully. Cal confirms he is still planning on taking his trip, but it isn’t for a few weeks. Edna (Andrea Menard) comes out to ask Sully about helping her load some stuff. Edna helps Frank (Tom Jackson) with his outfit and tells him he is looking good. When Maggie arrives, she learns that Sydney wants to take her canoeing. Maggie isn’t sure it is a good idea since she hasn’t done it in a long time, but Sydney reminds her she enjoys a challenge.
Sully tells Cal how the campground was handed down through the family until it finally reached him. His dad wanted this place to be a sanctuary for people from all walks of life. He made it his mission to carry on the legacy. Sully wants the campground to be a place that people want to come back to every summer. Lola Gunderson (Amalia Williamson) tells Rob that she wants to be ready for the people once the ceremony ends. She wants it to be perfect since Sully hasn’t trusted anyone to take this over until now. Rob asks Finn for help, but he is still mad about him not coming to the game. Rob promises to make it up to him. Maggie and Syndye struggle to keep the canoe straight.
They finally figure it out and continue on their way. Cal tells Sully that he envies his family roots since he didn’t have any of that growing up. They were never in any spot for too long. At one time, Sully wanted to travel the world. He eventually realized that he wanted to stay at the campground. Sully admits things don’t always work out like people expect. They see Sydney and Maggie in the distance. Cal agrees to take over since Sully needs to get back to Edna. After Cal helps Maggie get out of the canoe, she thanks him for walking her home last night. After that, Maggie goes inside and helps Edna. Lola rushes in to see if Sully is around because the hotdog buns haven’t arrived yet and some servers are sick. Once Sully comes in, she tells him what is going on.
After they leave, Maggie gets upset because she thinks a grown woman should be able to handle things on her own. As the ceremony begins, Cal asks Maggie about her boyfriend. He learns that he went back to work after a short visit. Cal mentions that Lola and Sully seem really close. Maggie reveals that Lola and her mom moved in with Sully a couple of years after she moved to Boston. Frank and the others perform the ceremony. After they finish, Lola comes over to thank Cal for helping with Roy the other night. Cal credits Maggie who asks her how her grandfather is doing. Lola thinks he’ll be able to come home in the next couple of days. Chelsea is asked to watch Remy (Oliver Boyle) while her mother finds her father. She reluctantly agrees to babysit him for a few minutes.
Sydney tells Maggie and Cal that she is taking Finn to the baseball tournament. She learns that Finn is bored so she agrees to take care of him for Rob. Sydney sends him outside to the fire truck before Rob tells her that Finn is mad at him. He confesses it is starting to feel like he is never there for him. Sydney thinks Finn will appreciate what he is doing now when he is older. She goes outside and finds Rafe keeping the kids busy with the fire truck. He tells her that he had a good time last night and asks her if she wants to get dinner. Sydney isn’t sure that is a good idea since they shouldn’t make it more than it is. As he walks away, she says she’ll think about it. Chelsea gets into an argument with her mother while claiming it is boring and there is nothing to do there.
After her mom calls her a brat, Chelsea says she just wants to go home. Maggie decides to approach Chelsea to see if she can cheer her up. Chelsea reveals her mom is giving her a hard time because she doesn’t want to be there. She doesn’t think she fits in there. Chelsea says her mom makes her so mad sometimes that she could just run away. She complains that she can’t even text her kids. Maggie tells her that she can use the landline later. Cal tells Maggie that was very nice of her. They go inside and find Rafe and Jackson (T Thomason) arm wrestling. Once Jackson wins, his dad says he is going to make a good officer one day although Connie won’t let him apply yet. Maggie is introduced to Tom who gets a call and might have to leave. Frank offers to go so Tom can stay and spend time with Jackson.
Edna makes Frank stay until they dance to the song that is currently playing. Cal tells Maggie that Frank and Edna are the most beautiful couple. Maggie says she sometimes goes out in Boston, but there always seems to be a hidden agenda. Maggie noticed from his license plate that he is from New York so she asks if he goes out there. Cal reveals he mostly keeps to himself. He does dance occasionally when he finds the right dance partner. After Sydney says goodbye, Chelsea’s mother interrupts to see if they’ve seen her daughter. The dad comes in freaking out because he believes his daughter has run away. Rafe speaks to the locals while Sully promises that they’re going to find her.
While they search for her, Maggie tells Sully about speaking to Chelsea earlier. Although it sounded like she wanted to run away, Maggie didn’t think she was serious. Maggie thinks she should look for Chelsea with Lola. She walks away and leaves Sully. Jackson helps the parents use the Find My Phone app to discover that Chelsea’s last location was a gas station in Timberlake. Maggie and Cal visit the station to see whether anyone has spotted Chelsea. A worker there saw her leave in a gray SUV about an hour ago. They go back and tell the others what they just learned. Sully watches as Edna tries to keep the parents calm.
Frank finds the gray SUV and thinks it might be poachers so he grabs a rifle from the back of his vehicle. Edna asks Sully if he has heard from Frank, but he hasn’t yet. Maggie thinks Sully was right about her saying something. Cal comforts her by saying there is no way she could’ve known this was going to happen. Sully tries to find out where Frank has gone. Frank confronts a boy who is on private property. The boy explains he is just out for some target practice with friends. When the boy’s friend comes back, he accidentally shoots Frank. Chelsea tries to call 911, but the shooter doesn’t want to go to jail for this. They decide to leave Frank and escape.
Sullivan’s Crossing Review
The third episode of Sullivan’s Crossing did a good job of building the story and setting up new possibilities. In particular, it is pretty clear what will come of Maggie’s love life as the series continues. Whether Frank lives or dies is obviously the biggest question on viewers’ minds right now considering how unexpected that scene was.
It is good that this story will carry over for another episode since more time is needed to cover it. Certain performances could’ve been better, but they were easy enough to overlook. The soundtrack has done a good job of matching the mood of their respective scenes and the songs are mostly enjoyable. Sullivan’s Crossing has been an easy watch with a decent story that seems to be building up to bigger things.
That may be enough to make viewers stick with it until the end. The episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Recaps of Sullivan’s Crossing are available on Reel Mockery here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link. Learn more about advertising with us here.
