Suits LA Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Seven Days A Week And Twice On Sunday – The episode begins in New York in 2010, with Ted Black (Stephen Amell) visiting and telling Billy (Aleks Paunovic) that if he doesn’t testify, he will arrest his daughter. When Ted leaves the house, it blows up and he wakes up at home to find Eddie Black (Carson A. Egan) standing over top of him. He tells him that he was having a nightmare. Eddie opts to make breakfast since he is already up.

Stuart Lane (Josh McDermitt) arrives at work to find that Lester Thompson (Kevin Weisman) has been arrested for murder. Ted shows Dylan Pryor (Victoria Justice) the new deal he got her with Warner Brothers. She tells him that he doesn’t represent her. When Rick Dodsen (Bryan Greenberg) shows up, Dylan asks what’s going to happen after tomorrow’s merger. Ted ends up agreeing not to pawn her off on another lawyer if she signs immediately.  When she doesn’t answer immediately, Ted tells her that he will give her until he gets to his office to sign and walks out. Rick joins him seconds later and it then becomes obvious that the two had the entire meeting staged. While in the hall, Ted also runs into Erica Rollins (Lex Scott Davis). She tells him that she wants the bump, but he tells her that Rick gets it. This conversation is then interrupted by Rosalyn (Azita Ghanizada), who tells Ted that Dylan signed.

Rick returns to his office to find John Amos (John Amos) waiting on him. John wants him to get him a part with hypnotic. Rick tells him the part is 15 years younger than him and they are not agents. He also tells him that this is something he’ll have to take up with Ted.

Lester is not happy when Stuart gets him out of lockup. Stuart tells him that Ted handles the production side of things while he handles the criminal side. Lester then tells him how his partner shot himself while they were celebrating his big opening. Stuart tries to convince him to go with self-defense but Lester maintains his innocence and tells him to conjure him a witness.

Erica stops by Rick’s office to tease him while Rosalyn tells Ted that his father is in hospice. Ted says he knows and tells her to tell them to call back when he is dead. This causes Ted to flashback to 2010 when his father (Matt Letscher) offered him a job after the blast. Ted turns him down. Ted’s memory is interrupted by Rick, who wants to talk about Erica and the promotion. This doesn’t go so well and ends with Rick telling Ted about John. Rosalyn also comes back in with Ted’s workload and tells him to take it easy on Rick.

Ted visits Stuart in his office to tell him that he is all in on the merger. When Ted signs the papers, Stuart tells him that it is 15 years to the day that he came out here and they started the firm together. Stuart talks him into celebrating later that night.

Leah Power (Alice Lee) visits Rick in his office to tell him that she wants to work for him. He tells her that she works for Erica. She says that Erica has no interest in teaching her anything. Despite this, he turns her down and tells her that she should speak with Erica.

Ted meets with an unhappy Lester, who tells him that he is taking his case regardless of what he says. Ted tells him that Stuart is the best defense attorney in the country. Lester agrees to let him represent him.

Ted and Stuart celebrate their big accomplishment by making fun of Clooney at their dinner. When they are done Ted wants to head back to the office but Stuart convinces him to head over to Jones for another drink. Ted agrees and goes home drunk. When Ted passes out drunk on the couch, he flashes back to 2010 when Billy is declared dead at the hospital. Much to the displeasure of the doctor and Kevin (Troy Winbush), Ted convinces them to pretend that Billy is still alive.

Ted is woken the next morning by Rick to learn that Stuart stole every senior member of every department except sports and entertainment. Rick wants to file an injunction but Ted wants to get signed contracts from the clients that they cannot afford to lose. On his way out to do this, Ted runs into Amanda Stevens (Maggie Grace). He tells her that she is going to spend the day helping them close clients. She tells him that she doesn’t work for him. Even after offering her $100,000, she refuses to help.

Ted confronts Stuart. Stuart tells him that he now knows what it’s like. Ted threatens to sue but Stuart says if he was going to sue, he would be there with papers right now. Stuart then asks him what it is that he really wants. Ted tells him Litvak, Johnson, and Riley. Stuart refuses. Stuart also tells him that if he tries to sue, he will out the real reason that he left New York. Ted later visits Greg Litvak (Rob Nagle) and plays him the recording of his and Stuart’s conversation and tries to convince him to get Riley and Johnson to join him. Greg agrees.

Stuart calls Erica and offers her the head of entertainment position at his firm if she spies on Ted for six months. She doesn’t give him an answer at the moment. She does visit Rick and tries to get him to back out of the running for the position at Ted’s side of the firm. He refuses and tells her that Ted will never trust her. Erica then goes straight to Ted with the ask but he turns her down as well. He does, however, ask her to close on as many clients as she can, including Rick’s.

Ted visits Amanda and asks her what type of cases she mostly handles. She tells him criminal defense. He then asks her how she does it knowing that her client might be guilty. She tells her that everyone deserves a right to a defense. She also tells him that she knows what’s going on between him and Stuart and reminds him that once he does what he’s thinking about there’s no going back.

Ted returns to Rick and apologizes for speaking to him the way he did the other day. He also tells him that he is giving the head of entertainment position to Erica. Leah visits Erica and tells her to put her up for senior associate or she will find someone who will. Erica tells her that she is willing to go to bat for her but she needs her to know why she can’t do it for the next six months. What she tells her isn’t shown.

Ted now tries to convince Lester to fire Stuart and hire him. Ted tells him that Stuart doesn’t believe him but he does. Ted returns back to the office to find Leah waiting in his office. She tells him that Erica is secretly working for Stuart. Ted then rushes over to Erica’s office and tells her to get out. Erica tells Ted that she set Leah up to see if she could trust her. She also tells him that she hasn’t gone to Stuart but should have. She then helps him realize that if Stuart asked her to spy on him, he likely also asked Rick.

Ted receives a letter from Rick telling him that he is quitting his firm. Ted then meets with John to tell him about Rick and that he can still make the audition happen. John tells him that he is there because Ted is off his game because of his father dying. John also tells him that he needs to forgive his father. Ted says that he does not get to be forgiven. John tells him that he is doing it for himself not for his father.

While Ted meets with Samantha Railsback (Rachelle Goulding) to tell her that his father is dying, Erica meets with her mother to discuss whether she should back Ted or Stuart. Ted asks Samantha if it was her idea or Stuart’s to cut him out of the firm. She tells him that it was Stuarts. He tells her that he is going to come after her with everything he’s got.

Ted asks Erica why she stuck with him instead of going with Stuart. She tells him it’s because he sees her for who she is. He also tells her that starting Monday, she is the new head of entertainment. She tells him that she wants to be a partner. He agrees.

While Ted gets on a plane, he dreams about the time he and Eddie talked about their dad leaving. Erica tells Leah about her lying to her about leaving Ted. Despite this, she doesn’t fire her.

Ted visits Kevin and asks for his help on a case. Kevin tells him that his daddy issues blew up his career. Kevin refuses until Ted tells him that he can do it because he owes him. Ted visits his father and talks about the time he took him and Eddie to the Yankees game. He also talks to him about how he got convicted and let someone kill Eddie. Ted tells him that he can make it all up to him now by dying alone.

Ted and Stuart meet at a hearing to substitute counsel for Lester’s case. Stuart tells Lester that Ted can stand representing him in a murder trial. Lester tells him that he knows Ted believes him. Stuart hands over the case without putting up a fight. Lester pleads not guilty.

The episode ends with Erica receiving her new Black & Associates business cards.

Suits LA Review

Talk about some major daddy issues. Ted has them for sure. You can tell for sure that this is a Suits spin-off. The theory of this series was kind of intriguing because Hollywood greats get themselves into some pretty hairy legal situations. Just take Alex Baldwin and the Rust lawsuit, for instance, that’s the perfect example. As for the execution of the show, it was fairly lackluster.

I had a hard time getting into it and it probably had something to do with the lack of action. It seemed like the whole episode was just talking. Someone was in someone’s office and then the next minute someone else was in someone’s office. Suits was that way as well but I kind of liked it. For some reason, I had a hard time getting into this series, and for that, I’d have to give it a 4.8 out of 10.
