As the 7th episode of Somebody Somewhere begins, Sam (Bridget Everett) helps a customer at Tender Moments. The woman says the item will match her beige couch perfectly. Sam suggests mixing things up by using one traditional one and a mid-century farmhouse one. Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) watches how Sam skillfully handles the customer. Once the customer checks out and leaves, Tricia tells Sam that was a great sale. Sam admits it was kind of fun before agreeing to watch the store while Tricia picks up Shannon (Kailey Albus). Before Tricia goes, Sam asks if she is okay and whether she’d like to talk. Tricia insists she is fine. Later, Fred Rococo (Murray Hill) runs into Sam while looking for Ed. Sam explains he is visiting Mary Jo.
Fred knows about that because he is a member of the club now. He has the soil reports for Ed so Sam agrees to pass them along. Sam changes the subject by revealing she used to since in here with her sisters. She explains she thought they could try having a choir practice in the barn at some point since the acoustics are pretty good. Fred wants to hear them then. Sam does and Fred agrees the acoustics are good. She isn’t sure how to bring it up with Joel (Jeff Hiller) because he has been going through so much. Fred admits Joel is sensitive and called him like every 10 minutes last Sunday. He wants to tell Joel to just get off the phone and go back to church already. Fred pitches the idea of having a poker party, buttering Joel up, and proposing the barn idea. Sam agrees. At Prairie Prayers, Ed (Mike Hagerty) visits Mary Jo (Jane Brody) who says they give her a good lunch.
One of the staff members interrupts to pull Ed aside for a private conversation. Mary watches them through the window while they talk to private. Sam arrives at Joel’s house early and gives him two options, go to church or Zumba together. Sam curses when Joel says Zumba because a curveball is thrown into her plans. Sam has other ideas such as finding Joel a church and getting him all Jesus’d up, but Joel has no interest. She suggests he would help her if she was missing something very important to her and pretending not to miss it. Joel eventually relents and agrees to go. Sam gives him five minutes to go get changed. They hit another speed bump when Sam’s truck won’t start. Joel suspects this is a sign from God that they should be doing Zumba after all, but Sam blames herself for ignoring the check engine light for three months.
She makes him drive. Tricia drives by and sees Rick (Danny McCarthy) sitting outside so she curses him and speeds away. Meanwhile, Sam and Joel plan their church tour before going into the first church on their list. Sam jokes that they likely do the bible really good in here as Joel gets suspicious that she has never been to church. When the preacher begins speaking, Joel has to nudge Sam to get her to stop texting on her phone. She apologizes while explaining Tricia wants to know what she is doing. Joel is trying to tell her to look at something in front of them though. Sam says the preacher is so hot. Joe agrees before instructing Sam to put him into the pro column of their pros and cons list. Joel begins staring upward to get a feel for the church. Once outside, Sam talks to Tricia on the phone because her sister is angry that Rick took the smoker with him.
She promises to take care of it. After the call, Sam says Tricia is losing her him. Joel can’t blame her. Joel runs to get the car when Coop (Josh Bywater) approaches and calls Sam’s name. He tells her he goes to the other church to get his steps in. Sam asks how he is doing before he says he is hanging in there. She goes on to say it is so crazy about Rick and Charity (Heidi Johanningmeier). Joel blows the horn to give Sam a reason to quickly escape from the conversation. A man walks by, calls Coop coach, and says it was a heartbreaker of a loss. Coop seems confused by what Sam said. Back in the car, Sam admits she doesn’t think Joel fell in love with the first church. Joel says it was a great church although he wasn’t feeling it. As a result, he is starting to suspect that the problem is him and not the church.
He doesn’t think he is a church person anymore but promises that he is okay. Joel agrees to drive Sam to the motel so she can commit grand larceny for Tricia. Sam knocks on the door. When Rick comes out, she tells him she has to take the smoker because Tricia wants it even though Tricia gave it to Rick for his birthday. Rick knows he messed up but still complains that Tricia isn’t taking his calls. Sam reminds him that isn’t really her problem. Before Sam leaves with the smoker, she stops to ask Rick what he was doing at choir practice. He didn’t think she saw him there. Rick claims he was working at the mall one night and just stumbled on it. He watched it from the door. Since he actually liked it, he came back with the intention of going in, but didn’t when he saw Sam there. She thanks him for telling her although she can’t forget what he did with Charity.
While waiting for Sam to come back with the smoker, Joel finds the old notebook between the seats and looks through it. When Ed walks into the kitchen, he is shocked to find Mary sitting at the table. He finds out that Mary Jo called Shannon who picked her up with her little boyfriend. She doesn’t think they have enough money for her to stay there forever. The doctor gave her a list of meetings before she left. She sincerely believes she can do it if Ed helps her. He agrees to help. Meanwhile, Sam walks back to Tender Moments where she finds Charity working. When she asks what she is doing there, Charity reveals Coop found out about the situation so Tricia has nothing to hold over her head anymore. Charity guesses people were talking at church and that is how Coop found out. Tricia enters as Sam tries to convince Charity to leave.
She refuses to leave. Instead, she gets into an argument with Tricia about product placement. Joel enters to give Sam the notebook she left in the car. He lies when he says he didn’t read her poop journal. Sam is worried they’re going to kill each other and it is her fault because she didn’t realize Coop didn’t know. Sam says he is a people person so he should jump in there and fix it. Joel steps in and reminds them that this is a place of business so they should go back to their separate corners. Once they do, he says he is going to do something weird right now and quote the bible. He begins telling them what it says in Colossians about forgiveness before joking about it. After he says somethings can’t be fixed, a customer asks if she can pay for her items. Joel encourages them to work it out if this is still their dream. Sam agrees to take care of the customer.
As Joel and Sam leave, she tells him that was awesome although she thought he was done with church. Joel says you find God where you find him and it was right next to those cute sleep masks this time. Then, they run into Reshma (Rasika Ranganathan) with the Chamber of Commerce who reveals Tender Moments won. They watch from outside as Reshma goes into the store to tell Tricia and Charity that they won Downtown Business of the Year. Next, Fred tells Sam she is all dolled up for the party. Sam is surprised to learn that they’re going to throw the party in the storm shelter. Tiffani (Mercedes White) and Joel greet her when she climbs into the shelter. Fred shows them the Fredibles he brought to the party. He dialed it back this time because Joel is a lightweight and got spiraled out last time. When they begin playing cards, Joel has a hard time focusing on the game and just folds instead.
Joel begins cracking up and mentions one of the lines from Sam’s notebook about putting his pecker away. He confesses he read the notebook. They push Sam until she agrees to sing one of the songs for them. Once she finishes with the first song, Joel requests she sing “They Call Me Mrs. Diddles”. Sam quickly changes the subject by suggesting they take a field trip. They like the idea so Fred offers to drive and take the growler. Soon, they reach the barn and get out as Joel admits this is scarier at night than during the day.
While Fred and Tiffani discuss the possibilities for the barn, Sam reveals she and her sister spent a lot of time in here doing shows. She believes her sister would’ve really loved this. Fred asks Sam to sing one of the songs about the Diddles. Sam isn’t sure why she is so nervous. She sits behind the piano and prepares for something a little different. She tells Joel this is for him. They listen quietly as Sam sings the sad song for Joel. Once she finishes, Fred complains that she bummed everyone out. He asks whether they can get back to it, but Joel thinks they should stay in the moment a little bit longer. They give him a moment before getting back on the road. Sam, Tiffani, and Joel drink on the bus while Fred drives them to a surprise. They pick up Irma (Meighan Gerachis) a short time after that. Sam asks what that thing is when people talk about putting childish things away. Joel claims it is from the Bible before revealing he loves her childish things.
Sam agrees. She can’t believe she is getting lit with Irma, but Joel jokes she is more fun than you might think. Mary Jo sits outside while Tricia visits Coop and asks whether he is alone. He invites her inside. Back on the bus, Sam stands up and welcomes everyone to Sam Miller after dark. She sings a raunchy song that Joel calls the best patriotic act he has ever heard. Later that night, Sam returns home and sits down on her couch. She gets up and goes to the bedroom where she lays down on the bed. She begins crying and rolls over before the episode ends.
Somebody Somewhere Review
Somebody Somewhere’s 7th episode was a good exploration of everything that happened up until this point. It closed enough doors while leaving enough open to justify another season. I didn’t realize going into the episode that this was the finale. In many ways, it didn’t feel like a finale although it still had plenty of funny and sad moments. It just seems like the show is only getting started so it is a shame the season had to end so soon, but it has already been renewed so that is good.
While the humor didn’t always hit home for me, I often felt strong emotions for the characters and things they were going through. The series is obviously different and some may not give it a chance because of certain subject matter. It took me a few episodes to really settle in and begin enjoying Somebody Somewhere until I started looking forward to watching it every week.
The episode did a good job of showing how much Sam and Joel’s relationship has help them cope with their problems. It scores a 7.5 out of 10. All recaps of Somebody Somewhere can be found on Reel Mockery here. Learn how to support the Reel Mockery project by following this link.
