Somebody Somewhere Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

sam joel episode 5 somebody somewhere

As this episode of Somebody Somewhere begins, Joel (Jeff Hiller) takes the dog to the vet because it seems a little pissed now. He admits it wasn’t a good idea to impulsively buy a living creature. The vet, Tiffani, reveals she dug out her old flute so she can work on a song for choir practice. She tells Joel that he doesn’t have to keep the dog because she can work on finding it a good home. Joel believes that is a good idea and thanks Tiffani (Mercedes White) for her assistance. He is worried the dog hates him. Tiffani recommends smiling for the little guy, but not like that. Fred (Murray Hill) meets up with Sam (Bridget Everett) at a restaurant as the phone’s alarm sounds. Others look at their phones as well while Fred calls meteorologists a bunch of ding-dongs.

Sam asks Fred whether he ever feels judged. He admits he does although he doesn’t have that kind of time right now. When Sam is asked why she wanted to know, she says she doesn’t want to bore him. Sam explains her sister and friends are all about faith and family and they’ll so judgmental about her life. Tricia has convinced herself that she has only slept with her husband Rick although she is skipping over a dozen or so names. Sam believes the real kicker is the fact that her sister’s friend Charity is sucking Rick’s you know what. She is in a difficult spot because she can tell her sister but she’d be the ahole who split up her marriage. Fred argues she should tell her sister since Sam would want to know. He pulls a Pretzel Schmetzel dog out of his pants and gives it to Sam for strength. Fred tries to convince her to eat it, but Sam isn’t eager to do that.

Joel tries to get the dog home before it has an accident on the seat again. He receives a warning on his phone and asks the dog if it can wait until they get home since it is a tornado watch. Meanwhile, Sam approaches Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) who is busy working on the farm. Sam apologizes for being late while Tricia says she got a lot done including fixing the leak on the combine. Tricia explains she is just getting all this cleared out now before finding a bottle of booze that is blamed on their mother. They agree to do a clean sweep of the house before Mary Jo returns. Tricia thought Crazy Dayz was pretty cool and Sam admits she did a good job. Sam listens as Tricia says Rick (Danny McCarthy) was very helpful so she needs to be nicer to him. Sam refutes that by saying she is too nice to him. Then, Tricia realizes something is going on.

A call from Shannon interrupts their conversation before a branch crashes through the window. While they rush to close the barn doors, Joel tries to get the dog to use the bathroom. The thunder scares the dog causing it to run away. Joel runs after it. Tricia finishes her conversation with Shannon (Kailey Albus). She tells Sam that Shannon is safe in her friend’s basement and dad is at his PT. After she says Rick isn’t answering his calls, she asks Sam why she is acting so weird. Tricia tries to reassure her that the tornado isn’t going to hit the barn, but that isn’t what is bothering her. She keeps pushing until Sam tells her that Rick is cheating on her. She has to repeat it. Joel runs back to the car to get out of the rain. He curses the dog for running around in a hailstorm. He screams he is coming for it before getting out. He returns for his emergency kit and goes back after the dog.

Sam tries to explain everything to Tricia. She tells her about the two cellphones as Tricia interrupts and urges her to get to the point. Sam reveals she saw stuff and she is sure, but she wishes she wasn’t. Tricia calls herself an idiot before trying to find out who Rick is cheating with. Sam doesn’t want to tell her since she suspects it’ll make things even worse. She relents and tells her it is Charity. Tricia gets sick and begins hurling although Sam throws up before she does. She blames the hideous smell on the pretzel Fred gave her earlier. Joel finally captures the little dog and finds himself in a bad spot. As a result, he decides to hide under a makeshift shelter nearby. Joel suspects something else is in there with them so he grabs his flashlight to look.

Once he spots the mouse, he throws the flashlight down and tries to convince himself that they’re okay. Tricia suspects a part of Sam loves the fact that her life is falling apart. As she breaks down, she begins complaining about Sam doing this because she hates her so much. Then, Tricia wants to know what she saw and whether it was Rick’s privates. The conversation turns to whether Sam told anyone else about this. Sam defends herself by asking if would’ve been better to just keep letting Rick mess around behind her back. While Tricia admits she should’ve known, Sam goes for the leftover alcohol. They drink some of the gross vodka, complain, laugh, and drink more. Joel tries to keep the dog calm while getting something to eat because he is getting lightheaded. He doesn’t think he can feed the dog some of the bar since it contains chocolate, but he’ll have to ask Tiffani about that.

Joel wants it to know he isn’t mad at it since he knows the dog is just scared of the thunder. He admits he is scared a lot too. When the air pressure changes, Joel feels it and gets goose pimples. He calls Michael (Jon Hudson Odom) to say he hopes the tournament is going well. He also tells him about the tornado and having to hide in a tube thing. Joel explains he just wanted him to know that he does want kids, a house, a Vitamix, a Dyson, and marriage. He tells Michael he loves him and it is the Vitamix that heats up so they can make soup. Before he hangs up, he reminds him that this wasn’t a proposal. He puts the phone down and begins calling the dog roger. Sam and Tricia lie on the hay and sing together. They laugh about the time Holly was singing and urinating on herself at the same time. While Tricia admits she misses Holly, Sam confirms she wears her necklace every day.

Tricia finally realizes why Rick has been working out and both find that incredibly gross. The barn door opens so Sam gets up and sees Joel standing in the doorway with the dog. They’re introduced to Roger. Once they go outside, Sam tells Joel about Rick while Tricia tries to get in touch with him. Sam admits Rick likely wasn’t a drug dealer since he just saved money so he wouldn’t have to use their credit card at the motel. When Sam burps, Joel immediately realizes the ladies have been drinking. Sam looks around and sees that the cupola is gone. She suspects her dad is going to be sad. Tricia yells that Rick isn’t answering, Charity isn’t answering, and neither of them is at work. She wants to see if they can find them since they’re likely together. Joel agrees to drive them because they’ve been drinking. When Sam asks if he is drunk, he says no but he is high on life and being a mother.

Joel drives them to a motel where he parks and confesses he never knew his daddy, but his mother always said he parked around back. Tricia gets out and walks around back while Joel asks about his wild appearance. She learns about Joel riding out the storm with Roger in the makeshift shelter. Tricia comes back to confirm they’re here. Joel and Sam watch as Tricia takes off her shirt and wraps herself in a towel from the maid’s cart. She pretends to be getting ice as she tries to convince the housekeeper to let her into one of the rooms. Joel wonders if they should do something. Sam admits she is glad he lied to Pastor Deb about choir practice before they get out to defuse the situation. They rush up while Tricia tries to take the keys from Weber. He eventually agrees to tell them the room number for $50 and the key for $100. Tricia says it is a gone deal and asks Sam to pay him.

Sam puts that responsibility on Joel who asks for the man’s Venmo. Since the man doesn’t know what he is talking about, Joel gives him cash. Seconds later, Tricia bursts through the door and tells Rick he has two hours to get home and get his crap. When she finds Charity in the bathroom, she punches her in the stomach. Then, she storms out of the room. Sam calls him an idiot while Joel isn’t sure what to think. As they drive back, Joel offers to stop and get some ice cream although Sam and Tricia don’t respond. Sam offers to come sit with her back there, but Tricia doesn’t want that either.

Tricia forces them to stop when she spots the cupola next to the road. Sam and Joel place it in the trunk while Tricia curses nearby. Later, Rick packs his stuff so he can leave while Tricia goes to her store. Sam tries to sleep but ends up tossing and turning on the couch. She calls Joel and they talk about how crazy that was.

Somebody Somewhere Review

While it likely isn’t going to be for everyone, I’ve come to enjoy watching Somebody Somewhere once a week. Some of the episodes were better than others with this one being the best yet. It was definitely the funniest although a bit emotional too. The episode was wise to throw a tornado into the storyline since they’re so common in that part of the country, and it helped create some interesting scenes with the main characters as well.

The only downside is the fact that we’ll have to wait another week to watch the next episode. Regardless, this episode was enjoyable and funny so it scores an 8 out of 10.
