Spun Out – As this episode of SkyMed begins, Bodie (Aason Nadjiwon) complains about Sunita showing up claiming to be Chopper’s wife even though they’re divorced. Crystal (Morgan Holmstrom) reminds him that Chopper is the important thing right now. Jeremy (Braeden Clarke) enters to get an order before Crystal mentions that he is a paramedic in training now. A man interrupts to ask to use the phone since he twisted his knee and needs to call his wife to come and get him. The guy thinks he overdid it while trying to get in shape for summer. As Jeremy begins wrapping it for him, Crystal tells him it is too loose.
They continue arguing about it until the patient falls over. Jeremy tries CPR but worries he broke something. Crystal admits that is normal before urging him to keep going. They get the man to the hospital where Dr. Yana takes over. Crystal scolds Jeremy for not knowing how to do CPR, but he argues that people are going to make mistakes. Crystal doesn’t think they have room for mistakes. A boy at work slips and falls. He tells Becca he is okay just before a bucket of grease falls on him. Hayley (Natasha Calis) and Lexi (Mercedes Morris) talk about Sunita and whether she is Chopper’s wife. Wheezer (Aaron Ashmore) comes out in a towel and admits he is kind of camping out there.
They rush out to help the restaurant worker and Wheezer ends up falling as well. The worker is worried that his face is going to scar. He explains that he finally got a prescription for his acne and people were starting to see him instead of the pizza face. He can’t go back to looking like a freak. At the hospital, Hayley tells Bodie she just dropped off the patient. She says Chopper isn’t intubated anymore so that is a good sign. They must expect him to wake up soon. Crystal informs them that they’re only sharing updates with the immediate family. The family doesn’t want his medical information released. Again, Bodie says they’re divorced.
She also isn’t allowing visitors. Bodie believes she only came back because she thinks she can get something from Chopper. Hayley believes Bodie is upset about something else too so she offers to listen to him. Bodie tells her about the call from donor screening. Whoever it is only came looking because they need a kidney. Bodie told donor screening to lose his number, but he is worried it could be his mom Jolene. Hayley doesn’t think anyone should go through that alone. Bodie argues that sharing DNA doesn’t make you family. When he mentions seeing Chopper, Hayley says anyone in scrubs can go anywhere in a hospital.
When Chopper (Praneet Akilla) wakes up, he sees Bodie standing nearby. Chopper tells him what he can remember about the accident. They had given everyone in the final sixteen time off so he was practicing in the fire tower. Once Sunita comes back, Chopper asks what she is doing there. She says they called his emergency contact. He is glad she came even though it is embarrassing being the first time seeing each other after the divorce. Bodie steps out to get the doctor. Tristan (Kheon Clarke) gets a text from Bodie telling him about Chopper. Nowak (Thomas Elms) sets up a volleyball net before urging Reese (Ryan Ali) to play. The others join in to celebrate.
Hayley goes inside to take a pill and look at her surgical scar. Then, Nowak finds a note from Reese in Tristan’s pocket. He begins suspecting the worst. Dr. Yana tells Chopper he was lucky to get a pericardiocentesis when he needed it. With time, his heart and lungs should heal. He probably won’t make it back to selection camp so he isn’t going to be an astronaut. He is also going to have issues with his forearm and hand due to shrapnel. As a result, he may not be able to be a pilot. Nowak listens to Reese and Tristan talk while he transports a patient. He begins quizzing Reese. Once they get back, Tristan reminds Nowak that Reese is his friend so he doesn’t know what is up with him today.
Nowak asks him about the note. Tristan insists nothing happened. He didn’t tell Nowak because he didn’t think it was a big deal. Nowak believes he always wants a way out and an escape plan. Tristan asks him to just trust him before Nowak walks away. Stef talks to Lexi about Chopper. She tends to a wound on Lexi’s hand. Lexi admits she is scared of needles. They end up making out. Lexi stops and explains she doesn’t want to start something she can’t commit to. Stef believes the time is just off so they agree to be friends. Bodie urges Chopper to walk and promises he is going to come back stronger than ever. Chopper says Bodie was sulking when he didn’t get a job.
This is different because his heart and lungs may never recover. After going on a rant, Chopper collapses and Bodie yells for help. Bodie tells Crystal that Chopper has to fly again, but Crystal isn’t sure it is going to be that easy. Crystal admits they can’t take Chopper back now that he has been cut from selection camp. She reveals that Chopper was cut two weeks ago before the accident. Chopper complains about the pain. Sunita offers to get the doctor. She says the doctor said he did well in surgery so they’re talking about discharging him soon. She thinks she should get back to papa. He misses Chopper who he described as the best engineer he ever had.
Suni thought it was a waste of his talent to do anything else. Chopper explains why he felt he had to be an astronaut. He always thought he would teach their kids about the stars. Suni says he doesn’t have to be an astronaut or pilot to do that. He says they wouldn’t be their kids. She was the one for so long that he always wondered about them after that. They end up kissing. Johnny and Baby practice their dance routine before opening night. When they practice the move, both of them end up getting hurt. As Tristan cares for her injury, Johnny passes out looking at the wound. Nowak lets Reese handle the takeoff. They lose control and crash.
Once they get out and check, they don’t notice any damage. Nowak wants to wait for an AME, but Reese says they should dig out the plane and go. Nowak says he’ll have to redo the line check because he can’t check him out in a plane he can’t fly. The male dancer apologizes to his partner for pushing her when she said she wasn’t comfortable doing it. Nowak tells Tristan that AME will be a couple of hours. Tristan apologizes and admits he freaked out because things were getting serious. He let Reese kiss him, but he didn’t know that Nowak was his boyfriend. Tristan can’t expect Nowak to trust him unless he tells him everything he needs to know. Nowak apologizes too before they kiss.
The male patient collapses. Nowak agrees to fly out. Reese thanks him for trusting him on this. The patient makes it to the hospital where Dr. Yana and Crystal take over. While Dr. Yana works, she walks Crystal through everything. Once the tube is in, Crystal confirms the man has an aortic dissection. They need to get him back on the plane because he needs to go to Winnipeg for surgery. Once they get there, the doctor doesn’t want to accept Dr. Yana’s recommendation. Crystal asks why she didn’t tell him she is the head of Thompson ER. Dr. Yana changes the subject. They go out to eat. Dr. Yana tells Crystal about her first day at Winnipeg Memorial and how proud she thought her mom would be.
She wanted to advance so she came to Thompson since it was the only place desperate enough to hire a queer black woman. Yana tells Crystal that she’ll have to be undeniable. Hayley checks on the restaurant worker who says Becca is going to the formal with someone else. He suggests no one wants damaged goods. Hayley offers to be his date because they’re not damaged goods. Later, Tristan asks Nowak not to take this out on Reese since he didn’t know they were together. Nowak tells Reese that he won’t have to do his line check. Reese tries to apologize, but Nowak is still upset with him. Hayley finds Wheezer getting ready to sleep at the dorm and notices the scar on his back.
Wheezer confesses he needed somewhere to stay since he and Lynn separated. He says they’ve been holding each other back for a while now. They don’t want that for each other. He asks Hayley about being home early. Jeremy tries to find out more about Rick, but the receptionist won’t tell him anything. Crystal tells him that they sent Rick to Winnipeg for a bypass. She believes she was too hard on him. Jeremy says he didn’t tell her about wanting to be a paramedic because she would’ve never thought he could do it. That is why he left too. Jeremy suggests he is never going to be good enough for her. No matter how much he has changed, he doesn’t think Crystal has changed at all.
SkyMed Review
This episode of SkyMed had some bright points and others that weren’t great. The series is at its best when it focuses on the core relationships of the pilots. The patients are also interesting sometimes, but it seems they’re being glanced over in this season. That may change if Hayley actually goes to the dance with the young patient whose name I don’t think was ever mentioned.
Some aspects of the series are very unconvincing such as Chopper becoming an astronaut and some of the hospital scenes. Despite this, there were moments last season when the show was very effective and even slightly emotional. It seems to be working up to similar spots this season, but some scenes stick out for being a bit contrived.
The medical aspect of the drama and the patients are being pushed to the back. As a result, SkyMed is becoming similar to any other soap opera on television. Regardless, it remains watchable with several characters that are easy to cheer for. This episode scores a 6 out of 10. Recaps of SkyMed are available on Reel Mockery here.
