Once Upon A Time Part Two – The episode opens with Miranda Frobisher (Tiffany Gray) telling Sam Gillespie (Max Brown) and Felix Livingstone (Jerry Iwu) that the strawberry was made of marzipan. Sam suggests she killed Samira Rowbatham (Mina Anwar) because she knew she was connected to Aubrey Frobisher’s (Martyn Ellis) death. Miranda says Bunny Frobisher (Katherine Kingsley) is the sole heir in Aubrey’s estate and may be responsible. Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson) arrives with a box containing the poisoned strawberry. Sam believes whoever is responsible for the strawberry is the killer. Wilf Wilson (Daniel Laurie) eavesdrops from outside the door. A short time later, Robbie Rowbotham (Les Dennis) asks who would want Samira dead. Felix asks if he knew Aubrey and Samira met to discuss the Panto Charity account the day before he died. Robbie denies any knowledge of it and pleads with them to find her killer.
Great Slaughter Theatre – CC Lowsley (Robert Daws) tries to ensure the cast that Sam and Felix will solve the murders. He asks when GSADS ever allowed murder to cancel a performance. Mrs. Clam (Belinda Lang) says the pantomime is for the children. Jonas Blake (Ed Birch) leaves to start looking for Aubrey and Samira’s replacements. Clam agrees to play the wicked stepmother if no one else is available. He picks Dorothy Thimble (Sarah Crowden) to fill the role. Clam questions if she is the right fit. He assures her that Dorothy is perfect and escorts her away. Clam insists Lowsley as acting chairman call an emergency meeting.
Wilf tells Peggy Button (Ami Metcalf) that he killed Samira. A short time later, Sam asks Wilf why he murdered Samira. Wilf says she needed to be punished for being a “bad person.” He says when she was matron at the orphanage, she punished the kids. He claims the kids hated her and called her the “Wicked Witch.” Sam asks what he utilized to poison Samira. Wilf sets a can of rat poison on the table. Later, Sam gives the rat poison to Sister Boniface. He says they had no other choice but to arrest him but they don’t believe he did it. She tells him that the toxicology report revealed strychnine, a component in rat poison, was utilized to poison Samira. Elsewhere, Sister Peter (Tina Chiang) snaps photos and examines the pin utilized to house the turkey. When Sister Boniface arrives, Sister Peter suggests the fox was framed.
Sam asks Peggy to see what she can find on the 50-year-old daughter, Janice. Felix informs them that the charities are fake and the money was deposited into one account. Wilf and Peggy are playing a card game when Miranda barges in and asks why he confessed. Peggy and another officer escort her away. Elsewhere, Felix and Sam tell Robbie that Aubrey must have been onto Samira’s fake charities. Felix accuses Robbie of murdering Aubrey because he knew it would ruin him. Robbie denies any connection to the fraudulent account, other than it being in his name because legally Samira couldn’t have her own account. Felix says several big purchases were made from the account. Robbie is a “weak man” who greatly relied on Samira and now, he doesn’t know what to do. Sam asks him about a Christmas card on his mantel. Robbie denies knowing where it came from. At the Great Slaughter Theatre, GSADS members meet to discuss Jonas. Lowsley says Jonas has hijacked their pantomime and turned it into a farce. Tom Thomas (David Sterne) suggests tar and feathering him. Lowsley believes it should be a non-physical approach.
Sam shows Sister Boniface Aubrey’s Christmas card similar to the one sent to Samira. She points out the missing Saint Joseph in Aubrey’s card and the crows in Silas Kaleb’s card. She believes Aubrey, Samira, and Silas were killed by the same person. At the theatre, Claim and Lowsley tell Jonas that he is no longer the director of GSADS. Jonas boasts of his directorial debut drawing critics from all over. Clam says it is about the audience, but he disagrees. Jonas warns of the negative impact of his inability unable to work with a group of amateurs. Lowlsey fears GSADS will be a laughingstock. At the laboratory, Reverend Mother Adrian (Carolyn Pickles) urges Sister Boniface to continue working to find Samira’s killer. She worries about Wilf, who reminds her of Dougal, being sent to Broadmoor. Sister Boniface says Dougal had a family, unlike Wilf. At the police station, Peggy informs Sam and Felix that Janice was convicted of theft 30 years ago. Janice stole a bracelet from her employer, Aubrey’s mother. Police Constable Hector Lowsley arrests Janice.
Sister Peter and Sister Boniface interrogate Sister Reginald (Virginia Fiol) about the missing turkey. They present evidence proving the turkey, Terry, walked into the woods. Sister Reginald tells them that she raised him from an egg. She agrees to confess to Reverend Mother. At the police station, Lowsley recalls arresting Janice who claimed to be pregnant with Aubrey’s baby. He claims the Frobisher family denied the allegations. Aubrey was at Oxford at the time. The bracelet was discovered under a floorboard in Janice’s room. Lowsley tells them that Derek Spike was later caught in a bribery scheme and terminated. Felix questions if Spike was bribed to frame Janice. Lowsley says yes but Janice already served her time. Later, Sister Boniface receives the toxicology report on the rat poison. Sister Reginald is about to confess to Reverend Mother when Sister Peter announces Terry is back. Reverend Mother is thrilled but not Sister Reginald. At the police station, Felix releases Wilf after the toxicology report showed it contained salt and bicarbonate of soda. Wilf admits to taking it from the props table.
Sister Boniface notifies Sam that she has identified the person who sent the Christmas card. Lowsley appears to have received a card as well. Wilf tells Miranda that he confessed because she was the prime suspect in Samira’s murder. She assures him that she would have chosen a more creative murder scheme. He asks if she is still his friend. She calls him a “champ” and promises they will be friends forever. Elsewhere, Sam starts to stage a break-in at Jonas’ house but Sister Boniface already found the backdoor open. At the theatre, someone attacks Lowsley from behind. At Jonas’ house, Felix questions how Jonas is linked to the three victims. Sister Boniface picks a lock and discovers a copy of Janice Kaleb’s “Once Upon A Time” for her son, Jason Kaleb, an anagram of Jonas Blake. The novel is dedicated to Samira, Silas, Aubrey, and Lowsley. Felix calls the police station as Sam races out the door.
At the theatre, Lowsley is hanging from the ceiling by a rope. Jonas recalls Janice telling him a fairytale that turned out to be true. He recites the story about a princess named Janice. Lowsley says he is Janice’s son. The princess fell in love with a prince who turned into a frog. Lowsley accuses him of murdering his own father, Aubrey. Jonas claims Aubrey seduced Janice and denied he was his son. In a flashback, Aubrey denies knowing Janice. Jonas stabs him in the heart. In the present, he admits to killing Aubrey. Silas kicked 16-year-old Janice out because she was pregnant, and Aubrey wouldn’t marry her. Jonas was reluctant to kill Silas because his eyes reminded him of Janice. Lowsley denies accepting a bribe to frame Janice for theft. Seeing someone in the hallway, Lowsley admits to taking a pork chop from Ted Button as a bribe. Jonas starts to cut the rope. Sister Boniface barges in and says Trevor Jones needs his inhaler. Lowsley assures him that she is harmless. Jonas orders her to stay put. She asks him to finish his story. He explains how he was sent to an orphanage while Janice was being treated for TB. He claims Samira told him that Janice didn’t want him and sent him and thousands of other children away to a life of abuse. The orphanage told Janice that he had died. Sam and Felix race to rescue Lowsley while Sister Boniface keeps Jonas talking about his difficult life as the adopted son of outback farmers. He eventually fled to Melbourne and returned to England to get revenge.
Jonas cuts the rope. Lowsley descends toward the ground. Felix grabs the rope and Sam grabs his leg. Lowsley stops before hitting the ground. Jonas orders them to come down. Sister Boniface places a horse head over his head. He struggles to get it off. She helps Lowsley to his feet. Jonas falls to the floor below. He is later arrested. Sister Boniface tells him that she is sorry for what he and Janice endured at the hands of others. He thanks her. She asks Jonas what happened to Janice. He tracked her down when he returned to England. He wanted to parade his success to show her how wrong she was for abandoning him. She was in the hospital riddled with cancer. For all those years, she believed he was dead. Janice only lived a few more days after learning the truth. Jonas swore he would avenge her. Completing her fairy tale felt appropriate. Once Jonas is taken away, Lowsley thanks Sister Boniface and hopes she’ll accept a Christmas gift from the Great Slaughter Police. Boniface has an idea. Sister Boniface tells CC Lowsley there is something. Miranda says he’s her half-brother and he murdered their father. Boniface says he was taken from a loving mother and condemned to a childhood of abuse. Bunny says the place is cursed and she can’t wait to get away. Felix tells Bunny she’ll have to accompany them to the station to answer a few questions about her first husband. Sam points out that her husband is alive and well in France even though Bunny has been claiming to be a widow. Bunny says he’s dead to her after running off with another woman. Felix warns her she could be in trouble for bigamy and fraud. Sam tells Miranda this is hers since she would be her father’s sole heir. Lowsley tells the others they cannot let this defeat them.
They argue about whether they should go on with the performance. Lowsley takes over as director. Reginald talks to Terry. Before Reginald can kill Terry, she’s stopped by Boniface and Sister Peter. Wilf is brought in to speak to Adrian and Miranda. Reverend Mother Adrian tells him about Maplecrest Farm which is a new progressive facility. It’s for people like Wilf who want to live more independent lives. Miranda talks to Wilf about being friends and being able to see each other almost every day. The audience enjoys Cinderella. Then, the sisters gather around for dinner. Sister Boniface tells Sister Reg Happy Christmas. Terry is shown in his fence.
Sister Boniface Mysteries Review
The story drags on for what seems like forever. At times, it’s so boring that staying focused is out of the question. The director does try to balance out the monotony with comedy skits but it isn’t always effective.
The killer is obvious way before the case is solved. A little more seriousness would have gone a long way in making the show more tolerable and the story more plausible. The episode deserves a 5.2 out of 10.
