Lost in Translation – The episode begins with a man trapped in a steel drum. He manages to call 911 but doesn’t know his name or can’t give an address.
Sunny Patel (Agam Darshi) talks to Tess Avery (Dolly Lewis) about the lack of security in her building. Tess tells her that Rigby’s murder is solved and she doesn’t need to be afraid anymore. The conversation lasts no longer because Superintendent Bennett (Roger Cross) interrupts to tell Tess that he wants her on a 911 call. He then tells her about the guy in the steel drum and how he doesn’t remember who he is. This leads to Tess giving Sunny the day off.
Tess and Detective Leo Li (Tony Giroux) speak with the 911 caller. She has him check the contacts and recent calls on his phone but it is blank. The camera on the phone is broken so there is no way to do a video chat. They also discover that there is blood everywhere; likely meaning the caller was shot. Doctor Rae Brampton (Tegan Moss) soon shows up to assess the caller as best she can.
After speaking with the caller, Tess, Leo, and Rae speak about what they learned and where the victim might be. Tess suspects he might be at a construction site while Leo thinks he could possibly be at a shopping yard or warehouse. They also suspect his phone is a burner since it is blank.
Sunny tries catching up on her sleep but this doesn’t work so well. She wakes up to check her computer and sees her neighbor freaking out.
The caller tells Tess and Leo that the oil fumes from the sand are getting to him. Tess has him run his hands through the sand and he finds a gun. She also has him check the serial number. After the discovery, Tess calls Matt Alleyne (Jarod Joseph) and tells him about the caller and his battery life. Matt tells her the caller likely has 4 or 5 hours less, maybe less. He tells her that the CO2 levels are what she needs to be concerned with. The call is ended when Leo turns back up with info on the gun’s serial number. He tells her that the gun is registered to Mike Nolan (Adam Kozlick). Mike just happens to be co-owner of VQH Construction and didn’t show up for work today.
While Sunny is woken by screaming, Tess calls Mike and tells him what she has learned thus far about him. Mike isn’t familiar with any of the information. Sunny runs a camera through her vent system to the adjoining apartment and sees what appears to be a man.
Tess speaks with Mike’s business partner, Thomas Armento while Leo questions Ezra (Patrick Roccas) about his black eye. Thomas tells Tess that the business is failing, but he has nothing to do with the financial side. Thomas also claims that Mike was arguing with Ezra yesterday at the job site. Ezra admits to the arguing and says that Thomas was trying to fire him because he came in late. Sunny sees her neighbor dragging what looks like a body on the hall camera. She tries to call Kye (Ennis Esmer) but doesn’t get him. Mike’s girlfriend, Ruby, tells Tess that Mike started carrying a gun and said the business owned a lot of money. She also tells him that she and Mike are on again, off again, but he’s been generous to her and her daughter.
Tess and Leo bring in Ruby to speak with Mike. He doesn’t recognize her and this doesn’t go so well. Sunny tells Kye about what she saw. He asks her if she has been sleepwalking again. When she tells him how she saw them on the security cameras he realizes she used his login and password. She apologizes but he ends up walking away.
Mike starts freaking out while talking to Tess and begins banging around in the drum. He ends up knocking it over and begins to suffocate. Tess suggests to Leo and Bennett that he fire the gun to create an air opening. Bennett says it’s a good idea but wants ballistics to weigh in first. Sunny watches Kye go speak with the neighbor that she suspects is up to no good. She sees him go into his apartment. Tess guides Mike through firing the gun.
Thanks to the new opening Mike can now see a concrete wall and other oil drums. Mike wants to go to sleep but Tess distracts him by asking him about the memory he tried describing to Ruby. Leo learns that six months ago there was a work-related death on one of Thomas and Mike’s job sites. It has something to do with Ezra’s apprentice.
Leo brings Ruby back in to question her about the death. Tess speaks to Ezra about it. Leo later also speaks to Ezra about it. After some grilling, Ezra admits that the site was unsafe but claims that was not on him. Ezra also says that Mike begged him to lie about the condition.
Sunny waits impatiently for Kye to come out of the apartment but sees another person go in. Bennett, Leo, and Tess discuss what they know about the case. Bennett tells them about the time he thought he was going to die dark and alone. Sunny tries rerouting the camera so she can see what’s going on inside the apartment.
Tess lies and tells Mike that they are really close to finding him. She also tries talking to him about one of his earlier memories. He asks her to describe the room that she is in. Surprisingly enough she tells him that she is clinically blind. He tells her that he is afraid of the dark. She tells him about when she was 15 and ran away from home. The conversation doesn’t last much longer because the phone goes into low power mode and they hang up. After hanging up, Tess receives a call from Matt. He tells her that they could contact the trade union and get them to do a search of their sites.
Sunny calls 911 about Kye and then makes herself leave her apartment. Kye soon appears behind her and puts his arm on her shoulder. This causes her to punch him without thinking about it. At the same time, Leo talks to Thomas about the unsafe job site. He tells him that Ezra was blackmailing them. Ezra admits to this. Leo learns that Mike paid the 50k but Thomas knew nothing about it.
Sunny apologizes to Kye for hitting him and learns that her neighbor was repainting his apartment and moving some of his wife’s belongings out because she recently passed away. She apologizes profusely but has to excuse herself when her phone rings.
Matt tells Tess that the Union has agreed to contact their membership but they need a formal request from the police first. Tess agrees. When Sunny mentions something about a horn, Tess realizes that all it will take to find Mike is to blast a horn on each job site at a certain time. When Mike hears the horn they can match the two and locate him. This leads to them also suspecting that Josh’s death was an accident because Mike’s outfit wasn’t unionized.
Tess shares her theory with Bennett. He tells her this will have to wait because the priority is to find Mike. Mike hears the horn and the team finds his location. After this, it doesn’t take them long to find him. Tess tells Thomas that they found Mike. She also tells them about the site manager telling them about him giving Thomas a key to an excavator. After a bit of trickery and grilling, Thomas admits to killing Josh but claims it was an accident. He doesn’t admit to killing Mike but Tess arrests him for attempted murder.
Kye shows back up at Sunny’s apartment. She apologizes again. He tells her that he liked her and hoped they could have gone out on a date but it seems as if she is stuck. He also gives her the card of a therapist in the building.
The episode ends with Tess and Lucas Avery (Alec Santos) talking about his wedding and their mother.
Sight Unseen Review
How many cop/detective shows have there been where a man or woman is trapped in a barrel or box? Countless. Despite this, I felt like this was a decent episode. It probably just had something to do with the different nature of the series that made things feel different. Sunny’s little side adventure didn’t hurt either. All in all, this was a horrible episode for not having Jake and an oversaturated theme. I’d have to give it a 6 out of 10.
