Murder On The Dance Floor – The episode opens at a dance academy, with a woman’s body lying face down on the floor. Nearby is a younger woman wearing a ballerina outfit with a pistol in her right hand. Via a communication device, Tess Avery (Dolly Lewis) and Matt Alleyne (Jarod Joseph) communicate with Sunny Patel (Agam Darshi) who is searching for her misplaced antianxiety medicine. Tess recalls Sunny recently sent her deceased boyfriend’s USB stick to the FBI. Matt’s video game character is killed. She reminisces about playing with Matt. Superintendent Bennett (Roger Cross) alerts them of the shooting. Later, Sunny guides Tess to the crime scene. Detective Leo Li (Tony Giroux) tells her that Jake Campbell (Daniel Gillies) is working on the Detsky case and Owen Cooper (Matty Finochio) will be backing them up. Tess asks if Owen is the hand-me-down from the 14th district. He says the victims have been identified as notable dancers, 18-year-old Melinda Lamb and her mother, 45-year-old Brigit Lamb who won gold at the Moscow International Ballet Competition. All evidence points to Melinda being the shooter. She was the last person to utilize a keycard to access the dance academy. The police were notified of gunfire at 10:13pm. Leo says it is an open-and-shut murder-suicide case. Tess questions why Bennett notified her, not one of them. She tells Sunny that girls rarely turn to gun violence. Sunny points out “spike tape” on the floor. Tess orders it to be collected for evidence.
Tess questions Sadie Lamb about Melinda’s and Brigit’s relationship. She says their mother was difficult and Melinda wasn’t violent. She recalls thinking of Melinda as a delicate Violet and Melinda as a show-offy hyacinth. She insists a Violet wouldn’t kill. She claims Melinda was thrilled to receive a Prix de Lausanne invitation. They have drawn apart over the years. She claims to have last seen Melinda last month at Stanley Park. Elsewhere, Matt informs Mia Moss (Alice Christina-Corrigan) of his plan to modify Tess’s favorite video game, “Night Assassin.” She agrees to be his guinea pig in exchange for margaritas and deep-dish pizza. Elsewhere, a loud noise startles Sunny away. Grabbing a fire poke, she looks around before realizing the window is up. She shuts it and installs a jamb. She later tells Tess that she believes she shut the window. Tess urges her to ask Kye (Ennis Esmer). Sunny says he is spending time with his family and doesn’t trust the new concierge. Tess makes her way to the crime when she feels a draft. Later, Tess is telling Leo about the draft when Owen rudely interrupts and asks if it is appropriate to offer her his hand. She makes a joke about her high-fives before suggesting someone could have utilized the catwalk to access the adjacent building. Owen recalls there was an area there not covered by CCTV. Leo says it would require extreme foresight. Owen blurts out Occam’s razor. Tess is beginning to like him. He tells them that Melinda was dating Miles Gatlin (Brendan Meyer). The murder weapon was registered to Nathaniel Powell who died in 2008. Leo informs them of the media labeling the incident a murder-suicide. Unable to make contact with Miles, Owen makes him a person of interest. Leo worries it is too soon. Miles arrives and confesses the killings.
Miles blames himself for Melinda and Brigit’s deaths because it was his grandfather’s gun. Sunny points out that he is fidgety. He says Melinda badgered him until he caved. He claims she complained about being stalked and suggests it was all in her head. He broke up with her over the phone the day before yesterday because Brigit controlled her entire life and lashed out when she messed up her dance routine. Melinda started biting her nails and stopped eating. Tess accuses him of walking away when Melinda needed him. Miles claims to have loved her and only wanted her to stand up to Brigit. A short time later, Leo tells Tess that Melinda was searching suicide hotlines and she and Miles talked for 96 minutes the day before the shooting. Owen informs them that security confirmed Miles was in line at the West Mount Theatre at 8:50pm Friday and the line was two hours long. Leo says Miles was there when Melinda and Brigit were killed. Tess assures them that he could have left through the rear exit. Owen tells her Owen was spotted leaving after the movie at 11:11pm. She insists on speaking with Sadie again.
Mia gives Matt a few pointers on his Night Assassin modification. He is impressed with her. Elsewhere, Tess tells Sadie that she was invited to attend the Prix de Lausanne four years ago but a bike incident changed everything. Sadie refuses to talk about her and Melinda’s relationship. Later, Sunny narrates a pirouette for Tess to give her an idea of why people love dancing. Tess cannot grasp it because dance is visual and she can’t see it. Disagreeing, Sunny insists it is about so much more. At the police station, Bennett tells Tess and Leo the DNA at the crime scene matched that of the victims. Leo boasts of being right about it being a murder-suicide. Studying the blood spatter patterns, they determine Melinda was shot first, ruling her out as Brigit’s killer. It is now a double homicide.
Sunny wakes up in a good mood until she discovers her cupboard unusually neatly organized. At the police station, Leo tells Tess and Owen that forensics utilized the Wayback Machine to find social media posts of lycanthrope271 harassing Melinda. It began more than three years ago. Owen says Lycanthropy is when a human transforms into a werewolf. Mia levels up and Matt dies. He receives a call from Tess asking him to track lycanthrope271’s IP. Leo tells her the stalker has been identified as Shane Calvert. She compliments him and says he should question Calvert. She gives the information to Matt. In the interrogation room, Leo tells Calvert that someone said he attended Melinda’s recitals, sent her sketches of werewolves dismembering ballerinas, and followed her home. Calvert admits to accessing her direct messages and sending her nasty comments after she turned him down. Leo asks if his username is lycanthrope271. Calvert denies using it in the past three years. Leo drops a file containing copies of a thousand posts, some of which were from two months ago. Scanning the posts, Calvert suggests someone is trying to steal his idea – werewolf meets black swan – for a screenplay. Leo asks if he has an alibi for last night. Calvert claims to have been in Atlanta.
Tess is walking home when she receives a call from Matt. He tells her Calvert made the first 11 lycanthrope271 posts and Sadie made the rest. Later, Sadie admits to phishing Calvert but she was in a bad place. Two days before the Prix de Lausanne, she slipped out to attend her friend’s party. She crashed her bike and suffered a fractured femur, ending her ballet career. Melinda took her place and Brigit began to control her life. Sadie says Melinda was far better than her. Tess accuses her of utilizing Calvert’s social media to tear Melinda down. Sadie denies killing her and claims to have been at home when Melinda and Brigit were killed. At the police station, Leo tells Tess that Sadie pretending Melinda and Brigit were flowers is a textbook projection. He suggests she is putting out an image of herself and hoping they will fall for it. He says the truth is that Violets do kill. They learn that a dog walker reportedly saw Sadie burying something in her backyard on the night of the incident.
Looking at security footage, Sunny sees someone inside her apartment. At the police department, Bennett informs Tess and Leo of a dance academy keycard wrapped in a blood-covered rag found buried in Sadie’s backyard. A short time later, Miles claims Melinda and Sadie hadn’t seen each other in years. Tess compares Melinda’s short ballet career to Pavlo’s, a Ukrainian dancer who had two corgis. It takes a few seconds jog Miles’ memory. She asks for his help in getting Sadie. A short time later, Tess admits to tricking Miles by making up the corgis and doubts whether he watched the entire film or not at all. Bennett insists they work overtime to take Miles down. Elsewhere, Matt asks Mia to be there when he shows Tess the modified game. She thought he was attracted to Tess. He assures her that they are only friends. Elsewhere, Sunny studies the security footage to determine the intruder is no other than herself.
Leo works on getting CCTV footage from Balfour while Owen times how long it takes to reach the West Mount Theatre. He says, “Just takin’ it for a walk.” At the police department, Tess tries to trick Miles by asking the same question as before. He recognizes the question. She says the person responsible is extremely clever. Owen tells them it took 29 minutes to run from the theatre to the dance academy and back to the theatre. He says the third act is 27 minutes. Leo shows them CCTV of Miles at the corner of Seymour and Davie at 10:31pm, 20 minutes after the shooting. Brigit convinced Melinda to break up with him. He says they deserved what they got. Owen arrests him and removes him from the room. Later, Tess tells Leo that she wasn’t thrilled to work with him again but they did okay. He admits to taking ballet and gives her a demonstration. Sunny is impressed. They briefly discuss Sunny sleepwalking. The FBI notifies her of the impending arrest of Rigby’s research partner who confessed to being behind the hit. She takes some medicine and stresses over being stuck. Tess assures her everyone is a little stuck.
Mia places flowers at Melinda and Brigit’s memorial. Later, Tess raves about Matt’s modified version of Night Assassin.
Sight Unseen Review
It’s nice to see detectives working together to solve crime, instead of against each other. Although fictional, the show gives hope to visually impaired individuals. Tess faces her challenges with a positive attitude. Too few series send the right message these days which is a shame. The episode deserves a 6 out of 10.
