Episode 2 begins with another locker room montage, although this one appears to be much more upbeat as the Bulldog players come, go, dress, undress, and shower. This ends with Shoresy (Jared Keeso) and Sanguinet (Harlan Blayne Kytwayhat) in Nat’s (Tasya Teles) office, learning about the webinar and seminar they are expected to give. The next few minutes are spent with Nat, Ziigwan (Blair Lamora), and Miigwan (Keilani Elizabeth Rose) attempting to explain to Shoresy exactly what a webinar is and why it’s important. With the help of Sanguinet, Shoresy tries to wiggle out of making an appearance but ultimately caves when Nat points out that hockey players have always given back to their communities. The meeting ends with the reveal that the Bulldog’s next opponents are the Charlottetown Reds.
Later that day, Shoresy spends the biggest portion of his lunch date teasing Laura Mohr (Camille Sullivan) about her upcoming interview with ‘Gorgeous’ George Gallant (Nick Laporte). The joke soon falls on him when he learns that she’ll be interviewing him as well.
Jory Jordan (Maclean Fish) with the Kid’s Report gives a quick update on the first round of the tournament. The Soo Hunt edged out a 3 to 2 win over Vaughan Canadesim while the Rapides de Rawdon brutalized the Barrelmen with a 6 to 1 win. Despite the embarrassing loss, Jory can’t but help but share some of the Freezer twin’s bone-crushing hits. He soon segues into the ‘Get With The Program’ report where he compares the Bulldog’s starting lineup against the Reds. First up for the Bulldogs is #69 team captain, Shoresy. Next are #4 Brant ‘Goody’ Goodleaf (Andrew Antsanen), #14 Ted Hitchcock (Terry Ryan), #3 Dolo (Jonathan-Ismael Diaby), #10 JJ Frankie JJ (Max Bouffard), and #19 Michaels (Ryan McDonell). The Reds are introduced with #30 goalie Ewan McDonald, followed by #16 Murphy, #9 Smith, #11 Caden Campbell, #27 Jackson Bernard, and ‘Gorgeous’ George Gallant.
Laura spends a few minutes interviewing Gorgeous George while Bulldogs and Reds fans pack into the arena. Shortly after that, both teams are geared up and on their out of the tunnels. Shoresy soon learns from Nat that he’s been booked for a last-minute interview with Anik Archambault (Kim Cloutier) at BROdude. At the end of the walk, she questions him about the Bulldog’s strategy for the game. As he so eloquently puts it, the Bulldogs are coming out hard and fast while simultaneously focusing on doing the little things right. While Shoresy takes a knee with the Jims (Jon Mirasty/Brandon Nolan/Jordan Nolan), they are approached by Gorgeous George, with offers of good luck and fresh lobster. Shoresy wastes little time nearly turning the brief meeting into an all-out brawl.
Sometime later, Sanguinet congratulates Shoresy for setting the tone but also expresses his concerns with Frankie’s absence. Although Frankie is at the game, it appears he was missing the week prior. Shoresy downplays it and reminds Sanguinet that it’s maple syrup season. The game starts shortly after the meeting in which the Reds take an early lead. Sanguinet calls an immediate time out and it isn’t long before the Bulldogs even things up. From there, Shoresy’s insults grow harsher and the Bulldogs take an even bigger lead. Going into the 4th quarter the Bulldogs have a commanding 4 to 1 lead.
Shoresy is interviewed once again by Anik who asks questions him about trailing early in the game. He contributes the turnaround to Sanguinet’s immediate time out the team’s focus on not getting too high or too low. She also asks about the pregame bickering with Gorgeous George, which he contributes to George trying to talk him into bed. Shortly after this, the game is over and Shorsey is handing out the game sticks to Michaels. The entire town is stocked by the win and appears to be in a partying mood, but the Bulldog’s captains are headed to meet Nat for their first seminar.
Although Shoresy approaches the seminar just like he would a game, things soon become a bit blurred when they learn that the topic of discussion will be nutrition. Despite the presentation being left in Michaels’ hands, Shoresy becomes stunned when he sees Liam (Keegan Long) and Cory (Bourke Cazabon) arrive with the youth league. Michaels attempts to approach the presentation professionally but is met resistance around every corner by Shoresy, who is anxious to get the focus back on their next game. Much to everyone’s surprise, the kids love Shoresy’s brand of insulting humor.
The episode ends with Shoresy awkwardly approaching Gorgeous George about the lobster that he promised earlier. Although Shoresy refers to them as crabs, he seemingly wants to use them for a celebration once the tournament has concluded.
Shoresy Review
I was a bit thrown with the ending. I am not entirely sure what it was meant to convey. That said, I have to admit I did enjoy the episode. As always, it wasn’t great, and much of the humor felt aggressive and forced, but overall it was a bad watch. I can’t say I regret watching. I’m even more excited for the upcoming episode. I do enjoy the redemptive theme and throwing in the kids’ love for Shoresy’s infantile humor does make things a bit more interesting. I’m intrigued to see how the story develops from here. This episode gets a 5 out of 10.
