Severance Season 2 Episode 2 Recap

Goodbye, Mrs. Selvig – The episode begins with Mark Scout’s (Adam Scott) and Helly Rigg’s (Britt Lower) outies returning to their bodies on the outside. Dylan George (Zach Cherry) is also briefly shown leaving Lumon under the watchful eye of Seth Milchick (Tramell Tillman). Shortly after this, Helly tells Milchick to go visit Mark and Irving Bailiff (John Turturro) and find out what their innies might have said while on the outside.

Helly meets with Harmony Cobel (Patricia Arquette) to thank her for acting so quickly and asks her to come back to Lumon. Harmony says that an apology is warranted. Helly apologizes on her behalf, on behalf of her father, and on behalf of The Board. Helly also offers her a promotion. Cobel tells her that she will think about the offer.

While Milchick visits and fires Irving, Helly creates an apology video to explain her outbursts at the party. She blames it on mixing alcohol with a non-Lumon medication for an arm rash. As Helly makes her apology, Milchick is also shown visiting Dylan and firing him as well.

Mark, Devon Scout-Hale (Jen Tullock), and Ricken Hale (Michael Chernus) discuss what Mark’s innie said at the party – She’s alive. Ricken thinks that Mark was clearly referencing the baby and Mark agrees. They also briefly discuss Cobel/Selvig but the conversation doesn’t get very far thanks to Milchick showing up. Once Milchick is invited in, he tries to explain what happened as overtime contingency, but neither Mark nor Devon buys into it. Despite this, Devon openly admits to talking to Mark’s innie. When Milchick starts talking about how violated Mark must feel, Devon also brings up Cobel’s infiltration. Milchick says that they learned Cobel was severely ill that evening and goes on to promise them that she will never bother them again. Instead of firing Mark like the others, Milichick tells him that he hopes to see him Monday. Mark isn’t so sure.

Irving is at home when he notices the map with Burt Goodman’s (Christopher Walken) name in his pocket. When Mark returns home and notices Codel’s car in the driveway, he knocks on the door but doesn’t get an answer. At the same time, Helly watches her and Mark’s innies’s final moment together before the transformation.

The next morning, Mark receives a lunch invitation from Devon while Dylan goes to a job interview at a door manufacturer. The interview goes swimmingly until Mr. Saliba (Adrian Martinez) learns that Dylan used to be a severed employee.

During the lunch with his sister, Mark becomes frustrated when she says she wishes there was a way to confirm what his innie meant by she’s alive. At one point when Devon tries to act like her suffering over Gemma’s/Ms. Casey’s (Dichen Lachman) death is as deep as his, he gets up and walks out. Later that night, Irving makes a phone call from a payphone and tells someone that his innie got the message. Someone is shown watching him from a vehicle.

Mark is at home changing a light bulb when Milchick shows up at his front door with a gift basket and tries to get him to return to work. He not only offers him a 20% pay bump but he tells him that his innie found love. Mark returns to Lumon after that. Mark is shown entering and exiting Lumon several times after this. His new team is also shown.

Shortly after this, Helly and Mr. Drummond (Olafur Darri Olafsson) play Milchick the message that Mark sent to The Board about his old team. Drummond tells them that The Board is going to give Mark what he wants, including Helly. Milkchick is shown visiting all of Mark’s old team with a gift basket and asking them to return to work. Mark and his old team are shown returning to Lumon.

One night Mark is returning from work when he notices Cobel loading up her car. He tries to make her feel guilty or betraying him but it doesn’t work. At one point she even gets in her car and tries to drive away but he jumps in front of her. He continues to hurl questions at her before asking if she knows something about Gemma. There is a brief silent stare-down before she screams and floors the accelerator. Mark barely manages to get out of the way in time. This is where the episode ends.

Severance Review

Another excellent episode with a lot of depth. I really appreciated how the episode went back and showed how things played out from the outies point of view. It was also nice to get to see a bit more about Dylan’s home life and I am hoping for more as the season progresses. The bit where he was applying for the job at the door warehouse was comedy gold. It was almost like he was talking to his brother. All around a great episode that deserves a 6 out of 10.
