As Fox’s Red Band Society continues, the show continues to explore Jordi’s history, the romance between Leo and Emma and Kara’s self-destructive hateful attitude. This week brought some interesting twists into the equation, which Jordi’s mother showing up out of the blue. Of course, we had already met Eva (Catalina Sandino Moreno) at the end of last episode. She was the lady at the bar that seemingly hooked up with doctor Dr. Jack McAndrew (Davd Annable).
So far, Kara and Nurse Jackson (Octavia Spencer) has shown nothing but resent towards one another. Liar, Liar Pants on Fire certainly didn’t change any of that, but we did get to see a new side of Jackson, who is now desperate to find a reason to like Kara. With the way Kara’s character is written, this is going to be a difficult task. At this point, it is difficult to find any likable characteristics for Zoe Levin’s character.
In the first two episodes, it appeared as though Emma (Ciara Bravo) was gravitating towards Jordi. However, the two took a sidestep in this episode, which opened the door for Leo’s move. While the two didn’t necessarily make any lead way, we did learn why the two initially broke it off. Before Leo’s big surgery, he broke off the relationship, in fear that he wouldn’t make it through the operation. With the Jordi and Emma relationship in full swing, it doesn’t appear as though Leo is going to be able to intervene so easily.
Of course, the biggest development of the episode was the appearance of Jordi’s mother, Eva. It is difficult to get a read on the situation, as a whole. Jordi certainly doesn’t show much love for his mother and mainly remembers raising himself. Eva agrees to stay in Jordi’s life, in hopes of keeping her relationship going with Dr. Jack. Of course, the lies that Jordi has told don’t strengthen his relationship with the other patients. At the end of the episode, Jordi is ready to kick his mother out of his completely, but something stops him. His reasoning is likely that he’ll need her in the future.
On the other hand, the relationship between Leo and Dash is beginning to strain, as Leo is starting to spend more and more time with Dash. On the other hand, with Emma pulling the strings, the Jordi and Leo relationship could get muddy very quickly. With Jordi’s interest in Emma, it doesn’t appear that he’ll send her away to save Leo’s feeling, so this is definitely an aspect of the show that will continue to develop over the coming episodes.
Review
Overall, this was a solid episode that taught us quite a bit about Jordi’s history and stressful childhood with his mother. This is definitely an aspect of the show that could build after consecutive episodes. The same can be said for the Leo, Emma and Jordi love triangle. While Nurse Jackson’s search for a redeeming feature in Kara is definitely going to be tedious, I believe it will be worthwhile in the end. The episode definitely pushed the series in the right direction and for that this episode deserves a 8 out of 10.
