Prosper Series 1 Episode 3 Recap

Charity Begins at Home – As the episode opens, Abi Quinn (Rebecca Gibney) is awakened by Cal Quinn (Richard Roxburgh) giving Mitch Leeway (Christopher James Baker) encouragement over the phone. She gets in on the conversation. After the call ends, Cal stresses the need to get Jed Quinn (Jacob Collins Levy) back to show Americans what they are. She urges him to get some sleep but he ignores her.

Issy Kalani (Hayley McCarthy) has a sonogram. Amisha (Violette Ayad) assures her that the baby is healthy. Issy says a prayer. Later outside Jed’s meal kitchen, Issy sees him bend over in pain as homeless people file into eat. She starts to get out of the car when Benji Kalani (Jordi Webber) calls. They briefly discuss their unborn baby that she wants to keep a secret. Inside the kitchen, Gordy (David Whitford) calls Leroy (Julian Weeks). Marcie (Teneale Clifford) calls him Judas. Intervening, Jed blames Leroy’s addiction for what happened.

At the Stingrays’ arena, Cal says he and around 50 business leaders and CEOs will raise more than $1 million for the U Star Sleep-Out. A reporter, Austin asks his opinion on a new regulation that would prevent organizations like U Star from abusing their charity status. Cal tells him that U Star is a “House of God,” not an organization.  Austin asks how he avoided ACNC regulatory oversight. Cal says if the officials were doing their job correctly, it wouldn’t be necessary to hold fundraisers for the homeless. Dion Quinn (Ewen Leslie) receives a call from Jonathan Malik (Matthew Backer) ragging him for letting Cal lead the Sunday service. Dion reminds him that U Star is Cal’s church. Jonathan says to tell Cal that someone had sex with a  goat. After learning Attorney General Michael Furness stepped down, Dion questions if Dan Gascoigne (James Saunders) will get a cabinet spot. Cal seems confident Dan will be the new minister of social services.

Juno Adebayo (Andrea Solonge) receives a box of U Star merchandise. When she tries to return it, Frankie (Melissa Kahraman) tells her that U Star does not offer refunds. Abi approves the refund. Taz Quinn (Ming-Zhu Hii) refunds her more than the original amount. Abi tells Eli Slowik (Jacek Koman) that three days at Camp David was not enough for Cal to work on his mental status. Eli says he is where they need him. She warns of what would happen if Rosa Adebayo’s (Brigid Zengeni) connection to U Star comes out. He confidently assures her that I won’t.

Juno returns home to find her belongings in the front yard. Elsewhere, Jed closes the meal kitchen and lays down on the sofa. He ignores a call from Issy. Bethany Quinn (Holly Leonard) celebrates her birthday with her family. Issy tells Cal that she believes Jed was badly beaten. Urging her to not tell Abi, he promises to give Jed a visit. Abi and Taz discuss ways to help Juno. Issy shows Abi her sonogram. Abi calls it a “miracle”. Dion offers to relocate to Los Angeles to be the senior pastor for their new church. Cal says Mitch is an important part of the process before suggesting he invite Maddox (Alex Fitzalan) to the U Star Sleep-Out.

Eli reminds Robbie Ratten (Rupert Reid) that he was hired to buy out Jed’s lease, not beat him up. Robbie tells him that Jed refused his offer and the boys are sorry. Eli warns him to not touch Jed again before he gets out of the car. He calls Cal to assure him that it will not happen again. Cal asks to speak with Robbie but Eli stresses the need for him to stay out of trouble.

Neil invites Maddox to the sleep-out. Believing he is nearly homeless, Maddox agrees to attend. In her car, Juno dials Rosa’s phone to listen to her voicemail. She receives a text from Juno inviting her to “squeeze the juice out of life.” She doesn’t respond.

Abi demands Moses Quinn (Alexander D’Souza) to stay off his phone. Cal calls Dan to tell him about the sleep-out. Dan claims his schedule is booked up. Cal warns of what people would say if he refused to help the homeless. Dan hurriedly ends the call. Abi urges Cal to get some sleep but he refuses. He later visits Jed to plead with him to come home. Jed suggests his intention is to bring the black sheep back into the fold for LA. Cal explains how it made him feel when he heard about him being beaten. He invites him to the sleep-out to help the homeless which was his idea. He vows to donate money anonymously to Jed’s meal kitchen.

Taz helps Juno get a job at a local restaurant owned by a church member. Tayla (Emma Horn) assures her that the manager will give her all the shifts with Taz on her side. Frankie and Tayla belong to the U Star young group. Elsewhere, Manny (Tommy Ropati) and Cal deliver Robbie a warning. Tayla and Frankie invite Juno to move in with them. Juno reluctantly accepts the offer.

Dion assures Cal that Maddox is coming. Cal says he is very proud of him before greeting Dan. Dion tries to call Maddox. Juno is working in a booth when Jed approaches. After they speak briefly, Tayla tells her about Jed leaving the church three years ago and disappearing. Dion believes Maddox is a no-show as he makes his big appearance. Maddox claims he and his mum lived in trailer parks when he was young. Benji tells Dion that he is onto him but Cal is happy. Abi and Juno watch as Maddox leaves. Abi says he promised to match every dollar raised. Cal reminds Dan that God why he will be the new minister of social services. Dan sarcastically says God wants him to exempt U Star from the charity tax bill. He warns that Canberra knows about his recent breakdown. Cal vows to let him run his own campaign as long as they win.

Cal is plagued with flashbacks of Rosa. He calls Abi to tell her that God forgave him for Rosa. She asks why he never told her sooner. He admits to believing he lost God until he came back and now Jed is back in the fold. She asks why he believes Jed will stay. Refusing to answer, he confesses to love her before ending the call. Issy receives a pregnancy gift basket from Abi. Elsewhere, Abi puts Rosa’s file in the trash bin. Call records Jed, Dion, and Moses in their tents for Abi. Robbie is inside Jed’s center with a can of fuel. Juno dials Rosa’s phone. Issy is putting the pregnancy gift basket on a shelf when she hears a phone ringing. Robbie sets a fire inside Jed’s center. Issy finds Rosa’s phone in a bag inside a vehicle. She answers the call. Juno says hello before the call is disconnected. Eli watches the center explode into flames. The episode ends.

 

Prosper Review

Cal is unhappy when he learns Robbie’s men beat Jed. Ignoring Eli’s warning, Cal pays Robbie a visit warning him to stay away from his family. He convinces Jed to attend the U Star Sleep-Out. While Jed is at the fundraiser, Eli and Robbie burn his center.

Issy tells Abi about her pregnancy. She finds Rosa’s phone inside a vehicle. Juno knows someone has her mum’s phone but doesn’t know who.

Abi and Taz get Juno a job and a place to stay. She is leery of their help.

Dion offers to relocate to be the LA senior pastor but Cal has Mitch picked for the position. Jonathan continues to badger Dion about taking a backseat to Cal after his situation with Rosa. Dion convinces Maddox to attend the sleep-out. Maddox agrees to match every dollar raised for the homeless population.
