Traces To Somewhere – The episode opens in the West Pasture, with Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) trying to convince Cecilia Abbott (Lili Taylor) that it is real. Unable to believe it without proof, she leaves to look for Amy Abbott (Olive Abercrombie). Once alone, he observes three bore holes in the ground where the black hole opened up. He finds what appears to be an old hypodermic needle from the University of UW.
Back in time, Perry Abbott (Tom Pelphrey) shows Royal Abbott (Christian James) a photo of his missing wife. Royal says women as pretty as his wife are always looking for the next best thing. Seeing a 1981 photo of Royal bull riding, Perry identifies himself as his son. He says they traveled through the same hole.
Cecilia Abbott (Lili Taylor) and Autumn Rivers (Imogen Poots) attend a church service. Pastor Ken (Johnny Sneed) tells the congregation that God plans everything. While Cecilia speaks about her missing granddaughter, Amy, two women gossip about Rebecca Abbott’s (Monette Moio) disappearance and now, Amy’s. Autumn scolds them for gossiping and suggests Jesus prefers to hang out with prostitutes and lepers than them. Leaving the flyers, Cecilia leaves with Autumn in tow. Autumn questions why she would want to go back to church. Cecilia agrees to let Autumn stay around as long as they are on the same page.
At the hospital, Wayne Tillerson (Will Patton) sings to an unconscious Billy Tillerson (Noah Reid). In the restroom, Luke Tillerson (Shaun Sipos) believes the flickering lights are talking to him. When he returns to Billy’s room, Wayne sees he is stressed about something. Patricia Tillerson (Deirdre O’Connell) makes a stir in the hallway. Luke holds out his arms to embrace her but one look is enough to make her decline. She dotes on Billy and tries to coax him into walking up with the promise of treats.
Deputy Matt (Matthew Maher) preps the search party. Martha Hawk (Morningstar Angeline) is among the dozens of locals searching for Deputy Sheriff Joy (Tamara Podemski).
At a Shoshone reservation in 1882, Falling Star (Kimberly Guerrero) shows Joy her Led Zeppelin tattoo and claims to be a time traveler. She gives Joy a Native Indian dress and orders her to stay inside the teepee. Refusing to listen, Joy pulls the dress over her clothes and pursues her. Falling Star points her to a horse. Joy struggles to mount the horse but eventually succeeds.
Rhett Abbott (Lewis Pullman) utilizes Levon’s (Michael Vincent Berry) tools to repair his truck. Maria Olivares (Isabel Arraiza) suggests they start in Whitefish, Montana. They kiss.
Autumn tells Cecilia that she has been taking medicine for her “head” since she was 10. She denies knowing anything about her biological parents or where she came from. Royal visits the University of Wyoming to speak to Dr. Nia Bintu (Yrsa Daley-Ward) about a device (previously assumed it was a hypodermic needle) found where the black hole opened. She questions why a mixture of elements exists there and why her equipment fails when trying to test them. She believes a river exists below the land. He leaves her a bullet as a threat to stay off his land.
Perry tells young Royal that he showed him the black hole and questions if he can go back through. Royal urges him to think about his future there if he never sees the black hole again. Perry says Cecilia and Royal are taking care of Amy. Royal denies he and young Cecilia Abbott (Megan West) are married. He introduces Perry to Cole Hendricks (Jasper Keen), Dalton Lyle (Micah McNeil), and Jack Kester (Zachary Shepherd).
1882 – Falling Star tells Joy that she came through the black hole 14 years ago in 1972. She claims one of the women saved her from being executed as a witch. She was able to help the tribe negotiate the terms of a treaty. When Joy identifies her as the acting Sheriff of Wabang, Falling Star questions how the white people feel about it. Deputy Carson Krum (Mark Sivertsen) informs her that Levi Sumner’s (Brandon Stacy) didn’t yield as much as he would have liked. Falling Star is none too happy with five bags when the initial negotiated was 10. Joy is shocked when Levi calls his son, little Royal (Bennett Foskey). He lifts Royal into the wagon with Alice Sumner (Sarah Minnich) and a young girl. Falling Star says Levi pays his rent in goods. Joy learns the black hole is gone.
The Handsome Gambler – Rhett sees a missing person flyer for Amy. Royal tells him that Amy disappeared at the rodeo and Perry is missing. He fears Rhett will be stuck there and they may lose their farm. A short time later, Rhett tells Maria that he must stay because Amy is missing. She claims to understand.
Young Royal is confused as to why Perry would jump into the black hole just because Rebecca is missing. Perry admits to killing Trevor Tillerson (Matt Lauria) out of rage. Royal agrees to hire him but he cannot tell anyone about his past. A short time later, Cecilia is not happy when Royal brings Perry home. After a bit of back and forth, she accepts Perry as their hired hand. Young Wayne Tillerson (Daniel Abeles) greets Cecilia with a kiss. Mr. Abbott (Don Williams) and Wayne embrace. Wayne makes a snide remark to Royal. Perry is shocked. Royal admits to detesting Wayne.
An unconscious Billy dreams about Autumn before waking up in the hospital. Patricia blurts out that he was shot. Wayne pulls down Billy’s gown to expose the Abbott brand on his chest. Luke is irate. Wayne quotes Deuteronomy, chapter 32, verse 41. Patricia suggests calling the police. Wayne says it is time he broke Royal. Luke supports Wayne’s idea. A short time later, Patricia asks Luke if he pretending to turn against her. He asks her to trust him because he sees things differently now. She embraces him. He convinces her to go home.
1882 – Joy looks at Rose Hawk (Ofelia Garcia) and Martha’s photos before her phone shuts down. She breaks down weeping. Falling Star assures her that it is a great place to stay if she cannot go home. Joy tosses her phone into the fire. In the present, Martha is distraught over Joy’s disappearance. Finding the photo that Rose tried to show her, Martha sees Joy at an Indian reservation.
Cecilia suggests Autumn wasn’t taught good manners. Autumn claims her mother believed everyone should have their own personality. Cecilia suggests she belonged to a cult. Autumn sarcastically says, “Or her church.” Cecilia asks her about the black hole. Autumn assures her that it is connected to the Abbott family and asks to borrow Cecilia’s book. Royal questions her newfound interest in the Bible. She expresses her desire to learn new things. Once alone, Royal offers to explain Bintu’s theory on the West Pasture but Cecilia has no interest in it. Cecilia says Amy and Rebecca left the rodeo together. She claims Rebecca and Lewis Mays were intimately involved. The episode ends.
Outer Range Review
Joy goes back to 1882, where she meets time traveler, Falling Star who is from 1972. With the black hole gone, her hope of going home wanes. Martha finds a black and white photo of Joy with a Shoshone tribe.
Billy wakes up with an Abbott brand on his chest. Wayne vows revenge and rejects Patricia’s suggestion to get the police involved. Luke convinces her to go home and let him and Wayne deal with Royal.
Perry travels back to when Cecilia is dating Wayne and Royal is living with the Tillerson family. He tells Royal that he traveled there through the black hole after killing Trevor and Rebecca disappeared.
Rhett and Maria’s plans to relocate to Whitefish, Montana are stalled when they learn of Amy’s disappearance.
Autumn has a new interest in the Bible. Royal believes she is an older version of Amy.
