Best And Final – Episode 7 opens on the night of Lydia Morgan’s (Lisa Kudrow) concert. Emily Morgan (Chloe East) will be spending the night studying at Stacey’s house while Jacob Morgan (Wyatt Aubrey) claims to be sick. Lydia appears completely fine that Jacob will be missing the event but Paul Morgan (Ray Romano) doesn’t take the news so well.
Paul is now in full-blown freakout mode because he can’t get a hold of Lydia and Mikey Morgan (Denis Leary). As he is leaving a hysterical voice message, Greg Boycelane (Matt Rogers) arrives with even more bad news. Not only has Morgan’s offer been canceled due to insufficient funds, but the house might not be so desirable in the next 24 hours thanks to all the rumors going around on the Citizen app. Greg doesn’t appear to be too focused on the new gaping hole in the wall, but rather on the extra 400 square feet of space that he claims will make an excellent addition.
Paul finally gets through to Lydia’s phone but it certainly doesn’t help that Mikey answers. Paul automatically assumes the worst while Mikey assures him that everything is fine. Paul eventually hears Lydia in the background but matters only end up more strained when she reveals that she now knows about him keeping Jacob’s stealing from her. As far as the house goes, she tells him to do whatever he feels is right.
Elsewhere, Mikey thanks Lydia for giving him a ride home. Lydia claims it’s the least she could do after everything. She also asks if she needs to be worried about the men who were supposedly looking for him. He claims he was only bluffing. Lydia leaves just as Mikey buzzes Nate Morgan (Kevin Alves) up to his apartment.
Dennis Sampson (O-T Fagbenle) arrives at Carla Owen’s (Teyonah Parris) side just in time to learn that Dr. Cutler has had a family emergency and won’t be able to make the delivery. The entire family freaks out but matters are made even worse when Denise Sampson (Anna Maria Horsford) offers to deliver the baby. Dennis quickly takes charge of the situation by sending his mother off to get him a sandwich and then assuring Carla everything will be just fine.
Bobby Barnett (Rory Scovel) and Margo/Luann Starling (Linda Cardellini) cautiously watch JD Campbell (Luke Wilson) from away before Margo makes an approach. JD immediately blows up on her about lying. When Margo tells him that she was ashamed of Bobby and where she came from, he reminds her that he came from Possum’s Hollow. She tells him that at least he had a good childhood and apologizes for not trusting in the fact that they were meant for each other. This apparently isn’t good enough for JD because he goes on for several more minutes about the sob story, the fire, the lying, and the cheating. Much to his surprise, Margo claims the fire was real. Margo eventually agrees to take Bobby back to the boat, pack him up, and make him leave, but JD volunteers to do it. Just as Margo and JD get off the curb and get ready to go back inside, Sarah Weber (Poppy Liu) and Leslie Fisher (Abbi Jacobson) are briefly shown watching them. This is abruptly interrupted when Sarah receives a call from the hospital.
Lydia goes to watch Emily Morgan (Chloe East) perform live at a small café while Paul Morgan (Ray Romano) returns home to go through Mikey’s evidence box. He makes it as far as uncovering and charging Jacob’s phone before Gwen Delvecchio (Kate Moennig) unexpectedly shows up at the front door, with an offer to sell his home. Paul seems more than pleased with the offer of a quick sale until she offers him $200,000 under the initial asking price. As if insulted, Paul asks her why he would accept such a low offer. Much to his surprise, she tells him because she knows that Jacob was murdered in the home during an armed robbery and he waited 3 years to put it up for sale so he wouldn’t have to disclose the information.
Gwen doesn’t leave the neighborhood without stopping by Margo’s house to brag about winning the home. She also tells Margo that her offer was refused due to lack of funds. By this time, Bobby and JD have arrived at the boat. JD tries to learn more about Margo’s past life, but he doesn’t believe anything Bobby says. JD even goes as far as pulling out his handgun and making Bobby drop his pants just to confirm Margo’s fire story. As it turns out, she was telling the truth. This leads to Bobby inadvertently telling JD that Margo arranged her and JD’s meeting at the Tulsa Regional Airport. From there, JD forces Bobby to tell him that Margo is interested in staying married to him long enough to collect on the prenup. Out of anger, JD eventually forces him into the water where it appears he drowns.
The story abruptly cuts to Carla giving birth. Her doctor is soon revealed as Sarah, who is super accommodating and supportive. This scene ends just as fast as it started with Sarah telling the Simpsons that they look familiar. The story then cuts to Emily and Lydia sharing a drink. Lydia awkwardly apologizes for being such a bad mother while Emily asks about selling the home. Although Emily claims that Lydia will likely feel better once she gets out of the house, Lydia tells her that she is hesitant to leave because she can feel Jacob there. Much to Lydia’s surprise, Emily admits that she feels Jacob when she performs.
Paul has a bit of a nostalgic moment when he paints over the door jamb that he and Mikey used to use as kids to measure their height. Jacob has some marks on there as well. After he paints over the jamb, he goes to Jacob’s room where he reads Dennis’s letter, asking to purchase his home. The letter is narrated in Dennis’s voice while the footage scrolls through Carla giving birth, JD at the boat, Margo verifying that JD is broke, and Lydia coming home to brief memories of happy times in the house. After reading the letter, Paul tries to call Greg but never makes the call because Jacob’s phone rings. When Paul realizes that Lydia is the caller, he listens to the voice message.
By this time, Carla has given birth and Dennis couldn’t be happier, despite his fears that he might not live long enough for his son to remember him. This eventually leads to Carla breaking the news that Jimmy isn’t his biological father. Although Dennis is completely thrown by the discovery, he doesn’t get much time to dwell on it thanks to the news that the Morgans have accepted their offer. A nearby Sarah now realizes why the Sampson family looked so familiar earlier.
A very brief scene suggests that Margo is about to shake things up when she picks up Harper Campbell (Joni Reiss) after dance practice, claiming that her mother is stuck in traffic. At the same time, Lydia returns home to collect some of her clothes and is clearly in no mood for Paul’s jokes about her moving in with Mikey. After a bit of back-and-forth bickering, Lydia unveils the source of her anger as Paul hiding Jacob’s theft from her. Paul defends himself by claiming that Jacob only stole a stupid pair of earrings for a girl. The longer the discussion goes, the more heated it gets. It reaches an especially tense moment when Lydia suggests that Paul shouldn’t have always responded to Jacob’s negative behavior by grounding him. Paul tells her that maybe Jacob would still be alive if she hadn’t brought a gun into the house. This hits Lydia hard and she tells him that she punishes herself for that every day. This leads to Lydia asking Paul if he hates her. She only gets madder every time he claims that he doesn’t and she eventually goads him into admitting that he wanted to leave her so many times over the last few years. He claims the only reason he didn’t is because he would have felt guilty for leaving her alone.
The argument doesn’t go much further thanks to Emily showing up and discovering Mikey’s evidence box. When she asks Paul why he has all this, it is Lydia who responds by saying that it is to protect her. The scene from the opening of the episode is finished in a flashback to reveal that Emily arrived home that night before Jacob. When Jacob later tries to sneak back into the house, Emily mistook him as an intruder and shot him. Paul eventually takes the evidence box from her and makes the startling discovery that there are two shell casings. This is important because Emily only fired the gun once that night, and the casing containing the bullet that killed Jacob is upstairs hidden away in a pillow casing.
Sarah returns home to share the news about the Morgan’s home with Leslie. As it turns out, Leslie has some news of her own to share. After scouring through the autopsy report, she thinks that the bullet that killed Jacob came from JD’s .40 caliber.
No Good Deed Review
What a great episode! Just when I thought the major reveal was going to be something lame like Emily mistaking Jacob as an intruder, the show flips everything upside down. Even if it did turn out that Emily killed Jacob, it was not something that I was expecting. I certainly wouldn’t have been happy with that, but I wasn’t expecting it.
On top of all this, Margo/JD/ Bobby and Carla/Dennis/Denise’s stories get just as intriguing. Major twists and plot change all the way up until the end. I most certainly cannot wait to see how this series finishes. For all the mystery and intrigue, I’d have to give this episode a 6.3 out of 10.
