At the start of the episode, we see a flashback of Murphy (Phillip Rhys) playing Russian Roulette. The gun doesn’t go off. Thale (Sam Strike) plays with their memories. Willa (Aoibhinn McGinnity) pulls the trigger and shoots herself in the mouth. They come back to reality and admit it was fun. We’ve jumped eight months in time. Agatha (Gretchen Mol) interrupts. Thale admits they’re his friends. She encourages him to find something a little more cheerful. Thale wonders if Karl has been ignoring her. Agatha reminds him that he is not like them. Karl D’Branin (Eoin Macken) continues working. He plays back one of his memories. He recalls working on the probe and being unable to reach the Volcryn. He tries a unique test with his memory, but that doesn’t seem to work either.

After the intro, Rowan (Angus Sampson) chops wood. He tells Melantha (Jodie Turner-Smith) that it feels great to be working with his friends again. She claims that they’re getting close to the Volcryn. She is worried that everyone is getting distracted. Rowan doesn’t take her serious. Rowan meets with Tessia (Miranda Raison). It is clear that they’re romantically involved. Tessia is pregnant too. Karl and Agatha have sex. They both have a vision. Agatha explains she has been taking suppressants most of her life, but the regular dose isn’t working. Double the dose isn’t working either. She is concerned that she’ll be locked away for her telepathy. Karl promises that he’ll never let that happen. Mel takes her concerns to Roy Eris (David Ajala).

Roy confesses that Agatha believes he could break down any second. Mel reminds him that Agatha hasn’t been acting normal either. They speak about Auggie (Brian F. O’Byrne). Then, their attention turns to Lommie (Maya Eshet). Roy is concerned that his mother might be trying to find a way out. Mel is convinced that Lommie will keep them safe. We see Lommie hooked to the system. In an alternate reality, she rides a bike to a restaurant. She orders a Downtown Dog and a lemonade. She changes it to a milkshake. Lommie joins her father (Joplin Sibtain), mother and brother. Her father explains that they should be grateful that Lommie built all of this. It allows them to be together again. Something goes wrong with Lommie’s alternate reality.

It seems like something sinister is right around the corner. Thale speaks with Willa and Murphy about their next adventure. Willa admits she is eager for another adrenaline rush. Roy speaks with Agatha about his life and Mel. He explains that Mel doesn’t really know him. He suggests that she is perfect and he’ll never be able to measure up. Agatha has a vision of a naked Roy laying on a table. Roy tells her that he’ll have Tobis (Gwynne McElveen) check on her. Agatha returns to her room and locks her door. She takes more medication in hopes of blocking the telepathy. Karl continues his work. He becomes angry and starts throwing stuff around. The tissue begins moving on its own.

Mel notices something going on with the computer. The Volcryn is detected near the Nightflyer. All of the test samples begin shaking in Karl’s room. Tessia’s baby is examined. Karl interrupts and pulls Rowan away. Karl explains that the probe is alive again. Rowan promises to come down after the scan. Karl performs another test. He is transported to a weird scene. Skye (Bronte Carmichael) calls for him. They speak briefly before everything stops. Karl calls Rowan and tells him about his theory. He believes that the Volcryn is using Skye to communicate with him. We return to Lommie’s restaurant. A little figure rushes by. Lommie’s family is dead. Little Cynthia attempts to kill her. Mel is there when Lommie leaves the system. Mel admits she thought Lommie might have been dead.

Lommie speaks about potentially dying in the system. Lommie insists she is working on the firewall and keeping everyone safe. Lommie tells her about the world she built inside of the Crystal Matrix. Lommie admits she hates her world out there. Mel tries to help, but Lommie insists she needs to do it herself. Thale joins Rowan and Tessia. Thale listens to the baby’s voice. He tells Tessia that he heard nothing. He explains he has been getting flashes recently. He insists it was like the bees. He tells Tessia he is sorry before leaving. Karl continues trying to manipulate the samples. He visits Skye once again. Skye claims Karl left on the Nightflyer and never came home. He tries to tell her about her sickness and death. She asks when he is coming home. He is jolted back to reality.

Rowan checks out the samples. He learns that Karl integrated the prone into the memory suite. Rowan is accused of breaking protocol and abandoning the mission. Karl tells him that all pregnancies in space must be terminated. Rowan tells Karl to do it himself. Murphy imagines himself with his wife. She is horrified by his face. He comes to reality near Willa. Murphy tells Thale that he wants to go back. We see that Thale’s face is deformed too. Thale stumbles through the halls. It seems that he cannot control his powers. Agatha finds him and tells him he can turn it off. Tobis checks on the baby again. There is a cardiac abnormality. Tobis believes that they need to induce the birth right away. Agatha visits Thale. He believes that everyone hates him.

Thale tells her that there is no helping them now. Tessia tries to give birth to the baby. Tobis seems stunned. She explains that she has to call Eris when there is a death. Rowan’s baby girl has died. Karl visits as Rowan finishes making the baby’s crib. Rowan intended to name the baby Skye. Rowan wanted to add something joyful to the memory of Skye with the baby. Rowan is left to grieve. Karl goes through family photos. Roy speaks with Tessia. The baby turns into black ash. A smoky substance oozes off of the baby. The room is quarantined as the episode comes to an end.

Nightflyers Review

This episode of Nightflyers took a big leap forward in time. The mission was put on the backburner while everyone went about their own lives. Only Karl remained true to the mission. Karl made a slight breakthrough and that allowed him to manipulate the probe tissues. Agatha is having more trouble controlling her powers and Thale is the same. Will everyone come unhinged? I am not really sure where the show is going and I can barely understand where it has been.

It is definitely unique and halfway interesting. Still, things are a bit too confusing for me now. This episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Previous recaps of Nightflyers are available on Reel Mockery!
