Boat Story is coming to BBC One and the BBC iPlayer on Sunday, November 19, at 9 PM. The six-part series is being described as “so weird, in a brilliant way”. When two strangers uncover illegal drugs on a washed-up boat, they will soon find themselves the targets of a vicious mob boss, his hitman, and the police. Boat Story is an action-thriller series about two ordinary people the world has turned its back on.

The series questions whether they are willing or desperate enough to do something crazy to get what they want in life. Will they be able to trust one another and escape with the money? The series is written and directed by Jack and Harry Williams. In a BBC press release, Harry Williams explained that “The idea for Boat Story came from having seen articles about similar things involving large amounts of drugs washing up on shores somewhere.”

The series is set in Yorkshire. Jack Williams said, “We wanted somewhere by the coast, but it wasn’t going to be the depiction of a traditional British TV coastal detective drama.” BAFTA-nominated British actor and writer, Daisy Haggard, plays the role of Janet Campbell who Daisy describes as a really good person at heart. Paterson Joseph plays Samuel Wells who convinces Janet to take the drugs. Tchéky Karyo, who is best known for portraying Julien Baptiste, plays The Tailor.

Boat Story Characters

Janet Campbell

Janet Campbell is a factory worker who’s had a run of bad luck. As she runs low on money, the possibility of maintaining custody of her stepson, Alan, is rapidly slipping away. Everything changes when Janet and Samuel find a washed-up boat full of drugs.

Samuel Wells

Samuel has never been afraid of taking a risk. Unfortunately, his risk-taking attitude hasn’t paid off recently since he has been struggling with a crippling gambling addiction. He concocts a plan to move his wife, Camilla, and daughter, Anya, to the North-East to escape the bailiffs without disclosing that secret. Samuel encounters Janet and they make the life-changing discovery together. As they’re hunted by a hitman, they will have to depend on each other in the riskiest situations.

The Tailor

The Tailor runs a massive empire of narcotics from his home in France. Once he learns that another batch of cocaine has gone missing, he’ll do whatever he must to find the thieves and punish them severely. As soon as he arrives in the North-East, he finds himself overwhelmed by nostalgia. Haunting tales from his past will be brought to the surface and The Tailor will be desperate to put them to rest.

Pat Tooh

Pat is an ex-paramedic who has seen a little of everything during her career. Now, she is enjoying a calmer life while operating a pasty shop. When a mysterious stranger knocks on her door, Pat will be reminded of the excitement life has to offer and the dangers that sometimes come with it.

Vinnie

Vinnie is a small-time drug dealer who has worked hard to build his operation in the North-East. When he finds out a stranger is moving in on his turf, Vinnie vows to fight to the death to stop them. However, his superstitious streak and paranoia will leave him questioning everyone including his closest accomplices.

Guy

Guy has become The Tailor’s most trusted hitman partly because of his disregard for his victims. Once he targets someone, there is little stopping him from finishing his mission. When The Tailor sends Guy to track down the missing cocaine, Guy will leave a trail of destruction in his path. However, his loyalty to The Tailor will be questioned.

Alan

Alan is an eccentric who feels that Janet is still his real mother. He resents living with his father. Sometimes, Alan believes Janet is the only one who really understands him. Alan soon realizes that Janet is hiding things from him so he knows something is up.

PC Ben Tooh

Ben is a hapless police officer still longing for the opportunity to prove himself as a serious detective. He will soon be given the opportunity he has been looking for. Is Tooh capable of putting the pieces together?

Camilla

Camilla, who is Samuel’s wife, is a novelist and dreamer who often gets lost in her own world. Camilla is excited about moving to the North, but she doesn’t realize Samuel is keeping lies from her. Before long, she will begin uncovering the truth and it may put her family in jeopardy.

Anya

Anya is Samuel’s teenage daughter. Unlike Camilla, she is not happy about being carried away to the North-East. Anya quickly realizes when things aren’t what they seem to be.
