As the ninth episode of Nautilus begins, Humility Lucas (Georgia Flood) and Nemo (Shazad Latif) speak in private. Nemo tells Humility about his daughter being afraid of the dark. They go back into the submarine to eat with the others. Cuff (Benedict Hardie) leaves so he can keep an eye out for trouble. They begin talking about the treasure and what they’ll do with it. Suyin (Ling Cooper Tang) wants to buy her son’s freedom. Turan (Arlo Green) will publish a book of his poems. He wants his father to see that he’s become someone. Loti (Celine Menville) wants to open a bar exclusively for her friends. Kai (Tyrone Ngatai) thinks he can persuade her to open the bar at Maitai Beach. Ranbir (Ashan Kumar) wants to find Jagadish’s family in Calcutta and give them his share.
Boniface (Pacharo Mzembe) wants to find his brother, Kamtima. Humility says she’ll return to the university and continue her education. Then, she claims she’ll start a university for women and create a scholarship in Benoit’s name. Jiacomo (Andrew Shaw) tells them what he’s going to do. Blaster (Kayden Price) doesn’t need treasure to give him what he already has. It’s the closest he’s come to family in a long time. Nemo wants to destroy the company. Cuff interrupts because Nemo needs to see something. They see skulls. Suyin doesn’t think they should be there. Before long, they see Halvar’s Pillars. They carefully move through and try to make their way to the treasure. Nemo gives the order to prepare to dive. They get excited when they believe they’ve found the treasure.
Nemo and the others go out in scuba suits to retrieve the reassure from the wreck. He finds a sword but the chest is empty. The others get pulled away before Nemo is attacked. Once Nemo wakes up, he finds that they’re being held captive by female warriors. Revna introduces herself to Nemo as the Guardian of Freyja. Nemo offers to let Revna see the submarine as their guest. He tries to convince Revna to let them go. She says her people have guarded the tomb for centuries. They will meet the same fate as the others who came to take what did not belong to them. Nemo knows their laws and says they have a chance to speak during a hearing. When they’re alone, Revna argues with her women about killing the trespassers. Nemo and the others realize Revna’s people have already taken the treasure.
Revna wears a ruby that will give them more money than they need. Kai questions how they’re going to get them. Hilda (Leeanna Walsman) talks about the blood on their hands. Revna says they took an oath. Hilda argues the oath was to make sure the treasure never leaves this place and not to kill everyone. Blaster and Suyin find Valkyrie warriors on the submarine. During a fight, Suyin tries to retrieve the gun. She gets it and shoots one woman in the arm. Revna talks to Nemo about trying to steal the treasure. Nemo says it was already stolen. He mentions the Timur ruby she wears and explains it was taken from his country centuries ago. Revna doesn’t want a history lesson. His fate will be decided on whether he’s worthy of freedom. The others speak up for Nemo.
Revna asks if Nemo instigated the uprising on Karajaan. Rabnir blames Jagadish for that. The witness statements aren’t perfect. Humility says they would be dead without Nemo. He came there in search of treasure he thought was forgotten. Humility insists he was doing it to get justice for his family. Despite Humility’s plea, Revna decides to kill them all. This leads to a big fight involving Revna’s people and Nemo’s. During the fight, Nemo’s crew tries to steal treasure. They begin running to the cliff and jumping into the water below. Cuff is injured just before the fall. Nemo grabs the ruby from Revna and jumps into the water. He rushes to help Cuff. Revna has to decide whether they should go after them. Nemo drops the Ruby and saves Cuff instead. Revna realizes they cannot protect the treasure using their old methods. She says enough blood has been shed and they’ve given enough.
Revna decides to bury the treasure forever to ensure it doesn’t leave this place. She uses catapults to hit the pillars causing them to crash into the water. Cuff thanks Nemo for getting him back to the ship. Nemo yells full speed ahead. The collapsing pillars create a tsunami preventing them from leaving. They manage to make it out anyway. Loti thinks Nemo should’ve saved the ruby instead of Cuff. Nemo believes he failed and put everyone in danger. He says this is all over. Ranbir reminds him they all lost something at the hands of the company. He complains they can’t stop this from happening again. Ranbir says this is about bringing down the company. Nemo asks where they start. He had a plan but it required money. Turan reveals he managed to steal a diamond from Revna. Crawley (Damien Garvey) receives a telegram saying the submarine is heading to London. He is ordered to intercept and destroy it.
Crawley wants to make sure the building and docks are protected. Soldiers rush to get guns. Nemo is already there.
Nautilus Review
The ninth episode of Nautilus exemplified everything wrong with the series starting with the laughable CGI. Some scenes look better than others, but the scuba helmets are horrifically bad. Although we’re so close to the finale, the series is still playing the same formulaic game and refusing to add anything interesting or new to the equation.
Nemo and the crew got into another dangerous situation, but they were never in harm’s way. They jumped off a cliff so they can have a final showdown with the company. Despite having a submarine, the crew really hasn’t gone anywhere or done anything that spectacular.
It’s just one obstacle and solution after another. This may work if there was a connection to any of the characters but there isn’t. The bonding moment during Nemo’s hearing fell flat as did Nemo saving Cuff instead of the diamond. There’s also no chemistry between Humility and Nemo so that feels forced.
At the very least, the faces in the scuba helmets make for a good laugh. The episode was fairly dull and achieved very little in the big scheme of things. It scores a 4.5 out of 10. Recaps of Nautilus can be found on Reel Mockery here.
