Mr Inbetween Episode 1 Recap

mr inbetween episode 1

As the episode begins, Ray Shoesmith (Scott Ryan) meets with Matt (Aaron Glenane) and asks him why he didn’t put on the bet. The man continues to lie pretending he did. Ray eventually calls Freddy (Damon Herriman) and gets to the truth of the matter. After the call ends, Ray throws Matt over the fencing. He crashes hard to the ground below. Moments later, Ray wakes up with his dog. After getting a shower, Ray meets with Freddy. He learns that he is going to need to collect his own payment. Ray tries to negotiate for another grand for collecting the money. Nick (Edmund Lembke-Hogan) joins Ray for the fun.

The men meet with Terry (Kriv Stenders). Nick tries to play hard with him and it doesn’t work. Ray threatens his family and that seems to do the trick. Ray heads to the park with his dog. There, he is introduced to Ally (Brooke Satchwell). Ray doesn’t say much, but it seems that he is attracted to Ally. The following day, Ray picks up his daughter Brittany (Chika Yasumura). They head to Uncle Bruce’s (Nicholas Cassim) place. Bruce asks Ray about the women. Ray admits he hasn’t done well in that department.

Later that night, Ray gets a strange request from a friend. Gaz’s wife has found a porno. He wants Ray to pretend it is his so he can smooth things over with her. Ray reluctantly agrees to do so. It turns out to be a golden showers porno. Ray accepts the blame and apologizes to Gaz’s wife. He takes the DVD and throws in the garbage outside. When Ray leaves, Gaz retrieves it. Ray and Brittany go for an ice cream the following day. They run into two men who give them a hard time. Ray plays nice with them while Brit is around. Brit is put in the car and told to stay there.

Ray confronts the men. He beats one up. The other one runs for it. He makes his escape only to run into Ally. This time, he manages to get her number. He also finds out that she is a paramedic.

Mr Inbetween Review

Mr Inbetween is just getting started, but I am digging it so far. Scott Ryan is great as Ray Shoesmith. The show is based on Ryan’s independent film The Magician. It works exceptionally well. Ray is a charismatic guy and that definitely helps. The humor here was good too. In fact, Mr Inbetween is one of the funniest shows I have watched in a long time. It feels just right at 30 minutes long. There is no pussyfooting around.

So far, I’d give the opener a solid 8.5 out of 10.
