Chain Reaction – The finale begins with Josh Buchanan (Ashley Walters) and DI Kat Donovan (Rosalind Eleazar) by the lake. Kat appears so flustered that her first question is about Dana Fells (Lisa Faulkner) and the dating app. Josh says that he knows nothing about Dana but admits that Sadie Cross (Amelie Dokubo) set the profile up for him sometime after her mother died. After a bit more back-and-forth, it is revealed that Josh left after meeting Mote LeBurne (Marc Warren) because he found out about Clint Donovan (Lenny Henry) being corrupt. Kat ultimately ends up running off after she and Josh nearly kiss.
By the time, Kat arrives back and town and declines Brendan Fells’ (Oscar Kennedy) call, Clem (Kieran Burton) and the farm hands have nearly found Dana. Titus Monroe (Steve Pemberton) and Reynaldo (Felix Garcia Guyer) are staking out Kat’s place when they notice Brendan stop by. Titus immediately recognizes him from Dana’s profile. It is only seconds later that Clem calls him and tells him about Dana’s escape. Titus orders Clem to get Brendan’s phone number. By this time, Dana has not only backtracked to the farm but she’s freed and armed herself.
Titus calls Brendan and lures him to his van just as Kat is returning home. Kat sees the kidnapping but is unable to prevent it. At the same time, Clem catches up to Dana but gets a knife in the gut in the struggle. After the kidnapping, Kat returns to the station to offer her help, much to the displeasure of DCI Ellis Stagger (Richard Armitage). He calls her into his office after learning that she has recently spoken to Josh. After learning that she’s also spoken to Dominic Calligan (James Nesbitt), he admits to paying Monte to confess to Clint’s murder. He practically claims he did it for her, so she wouldn’t have to find out about her father’s wrongdoings. Kat doesn’t really respond to this and storms off.
Stagger’s brief meeting with Kat causes him to remember when Clint gave him a puppy as a belated birthday gift. This reverie is interrupted by Nia Emine (Catherine Ayers). Charlie Pitts (Charlie Hemblett) and the team have learned that Brendan’s kidnappers cloned a plate of a van that belonged to Miss Callie Simms. Using her license plate, they were able to track the van back to a collection of farms. Stagger orders Nia and Kat to take a unit from the station and get down there while he wrangles back up. On their way out, Kat tells Charlie to do a search for suspicious activity in the area.
Upon arriving back at the farm, Titus orders Reynaldo to put Brendan in the house. This is until they spot the dog covered in blood. It doesn’t take Titus long to trace the blood from the dog to Clem’s body, inside the house. After figuring that Dana may have escaped and called the police, Titus tells Reynaldo to go to the barn, get the gas, and start spreading around the farm. Before Kat and Nia even arrive at the farm, Charlie calls to tell them about a woman claiming to be stalked by a dog breeder in the area. By the time he gives them the address, the farm is already in flames and Dana is releasing hostages.
Kat and Nia know exactly where to go thanks to the fire. When they arrive, Nia stays behind to radio for backup while Kat proceeds to the property. Just as Reynaldo realizes that the hostages are missing, he is attacked and ultimately killed by Dana. Dana and the hostages are in the process of leaving when Titus yells out that he has Brendan hostage. Although he gives her till the count of three to show up, he shoots Brendan in the knee. It isn’t long after this that Dana then Kat show up. There is some shouting and threatening and Kat ultimately shoots and kills Titus. As the scene is being processed, Kat receives a call from Calligan telling her that he has found Parker (Cyril Nri).
Sometime later, Kat meets with Parker and is completely surprised to learn that he is a man. Parker says he was expecting the day that someone would show up but he always suspected it would be Odette Donovan (Brigid Zengeni). Other than admitting that they were together for 14 years, Parker practically tells Kat everything she’s been hearing thus far about her father. She doesn’t appear too surprised when he tells her that Calligan knew about them and that’s how he blackmailed him to work for him, until it was too much. They both agree that they would give anything just for a few more seconds with him.
Kat leaves her meeting with Parker to find Josh waiting on her. This meeting goes much better than the last after he offers to buy her an ice cream. They end back up at the gazebo in the park where he tells her that he thought leaving would have made things easier for her. They go back and forth like that for a bit before she tells him that if she earned anything from her time with Parker; it was that she doesn’t want t to wait.
The next few scenes flash by like a happy reunion is fast forward, where Josh is shown reuniting with Odette and Kat’s friends. Kat is briefly shown meeting Sadie. When things slow to a lull, Kat wakes in bed with Josh. Although he doesn’t want to leave, Josh says that he needs to go pick up Sadie. While he’s in the shower, Kat receives a call from Charlie with the results from the prints on her father’s murder weapon. Although they are just a partial they link to Josh. Josh just happens to overhear this and proceeds to explain things. As it turns out, Aqua saw Clint trying to patch things up with Parker. Despite Clint seeing her, she was too far away and lost him. Clint then calls Stagger in a panic to get Aqua’s address.
Even though he is quite upset, Aqua finally lets Clint in when he arrives. Things go fairly well until Aqua unexpectedly receives a call from Kat and Clint gets paranoid. A huge argument ensues and leads to a fistfight. Josh happens to come at about the same time Clint is getting ready to stab Aqua. In the struggle, Josh ends up slashing Clint. Stagger just happens to show up at this time and takes care of the crime scene after Clint begs to not let Kat find out.
After Josh explains things, they both go into a stunned silence and the episode ends with Kat reaching out and touching Josh’s hand, almost as if she has already forgiven him or is about to.
Missing You Review
I can’t be mad that the series ends without knowing whether Kat forgives Josh or not, but I can be a bit upset with how things led up to that point. The whole scenario with Aqua, Stagger, and Clint just seemed too practical, but I guess that makes it more realistic. This whole series seemed like it was a crap-on-Kat-a-thon. The whole entire time everyone just lies to Kat and she keeps forgiving them, so what’s not to say that she wouldn’t forgive Josh? Still, not a bad series. I’d have to give it a 5.6 out of 10.
