Along Came A Spider – The story begins with prison guard, Sam (Mandela Van Peebles) at the female prison. As he stands aside to let the female inmates pass, he is sexually harassed. He gets the attention of inmate Cherry (Natasha Marc) as she enters the classroom. Mariam McLusky (Dianne Weist) catches the over-friendly interaction between Sam and Cherry. Mariam demands to know who sent Sam to the women’s prison. He explains it is for his own protection. She tells him the female inmates are no different than the male inmates, they will use you. Mariam teaches the inmates about human evolution. Cherry utilizes a mirror to watch Sam who stands at the back of the classroom.

Captain Walter (Rob Kirkland) is meeting with Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) about the incident that left two FBI agents dead and Iris (Emma Laird) missing. Harper (Emma Campbell) asks Mike did he get the missing FBI agent’s name. He responds with a few pronunciations until he finally gets it right. Senior agent Pete Hastings (Paul Popowich) is missing or a person of interest in the case. Ian Ferguson (Hugh Dillon) is taking care of the surveillance footage. Mike gives Captain Walter his phone. FBI agent Harper (Emma Campbell) takes lead of the case and warns Mike that the suspect will contact him.

Kyle McLusky (Taylor Handley) is concerned about corrupt activities coming to the surface. Mike guarantees he will not let it happen before driving to his office. He asks Rebecca (Nichole Galicia) to find them a new office. They trade car keys to allow Mike to continue doing business with FBI following him. Mike contacts Paul Selig (Brian Markinson) to set up a meeting with inmate Milo Sunter (Aidan). With Selig in attendance, the FBI will not record the meeting.

Mike visits Deverin “Bunny” Washington (Tobi Bamtefa). They discuss Milo’s Slavic gang. Mike can’t fix Bunny’s problem until he fixes his problem first. Bunny says problems don’t go away they just get big.

Mike arrives at the prison to meet with Milo and Selig. Milo greets Mike, “Looks like she was your flavor after all.” Mike says you have been in this box too long. He can’t wait until Milo has been linked to the murder of two FBI agents and executed by lethal injection. Milo says they won’t link it to him. Mike initially refuses him a favor, but eventually gives in. He wants Mike to find a metal case buried in the ground. Iris has her old job back.

Joseph the Russian (George Tchortov) enters a room, where Iris is sitting on a bed. He gives her clothes and orders her to get dressed for work. Joseph refuses to permit Hastings to drink an alcoholic beverage because the FBI will do blood work. Hastings runs down a scenario that makes it look like he was taken hostage. He closes his eyes to prepare for a hit on the head. Joseph pulls his gun, places the tip of the barrel on his chest, and fires. They wrap his body in a blue tarp.

Joseph drops Iris off at a party. It is a “lesson” for not doing her job. They enter the house and meet Duke (Andrew Howard). Iris is a gift with no strings. Joseph leaves and Iris is taken to another room.

In the breakroom at the women’s prison, Sam is conversing with other guards. He describes his day at the prison as a “vacation.” The other guards laugh. They warn him about bedtime for the inmates. Sam is the same age as the prisoners and good-looking. The inmates will poke and probe at him to see if they can get through. He will get a peep show, which the inmates will record and give to his supervisor. He shrugs the warning off. They tell him about female and male guards have sexual relations with the inmates. Some of the inmates have thousands of dollars in their accounts. The women’s prison is dangerous in different ways than the men’s prison.

While putting the inmates to bed, a female guard catches an inmate with a cellphone. Sam knocks on Cherry’s cell and asks if she is okay. She removes her blanket to expose her body.

Kyle visits Mike at his cabin. He brings Mike some dinner. Mike tells him about Milo’s metal box. Kyle tells him it is a setup. Mike agrees but doesn’t know how to do it. All they do is tread water. Kyle tells Mike about Tracy being pregnant and doesn’t care about the gender. He says Kyle should stop hanging out with him.

William Chalk (Jonathan Watton) attends the execution of the man, James Parker, believed to kill his daughter. Chalk is upset that Parker was never charged in connection to his daughter’s murder. His last words are to Chalk. He smiles and asks, “I wonder what you will do when you realize it was all your fault.” Chalk accepts the comment as a confession. He says, “I’m gonna watch you die, you son of a bi***.” The doctor (Lindsay Owen Pierre) inserts an intravenous needle into his vein. His heart flatlines.

Iris gets out of bed. Her body is covered with bruises and bite marks. She gets dressed and walks into the kitchen. She sees the backdoor is open. Before she can do anything, Big Beard (Joseph Ruud) offers her breakfast. She refuses and he offers a cigarette instead. She takes a puff and coughs. He escorts her to the shower.

Sam is standing by the classroom door as the inmates pass by. An inmate pushes Cherry into him. She grabs his crotch and says, “I’ll see you tonight.” A female guard tells him to get his head out of his ass.

Prison guard Tim Weaver (Jason E. Kelley) offers the inmates breakfast. All the inmates have their backs facing him. He calls for assistance. The inmates set down on their bunks. Warden Mills (Adam Clark) says the inmates are making a statement. Prison guard Ed (James Jordan) says it isn’t a statement, it is a threat. The guards cannot blink, and the lights need to be left on 24 hours. Stop taking their breakfast to avoid a hunger strike. Stevie (Derek Webster) says it legitimizes a point of view that is not a point of view. Warden Mills why is the point of view not legitimate. Ed angrily yells, “Because they’re fu**ing convicts.” They are ordered to bring the gang leaders into the cafeteria. Warden Mills will hear them out.

Gang leaders, Carlos (Jose Pablo Cantillo), P-Dog (Pha’rez Lass), and others are handcuffed. The inmates begin to act out. Ed warns P-Dog, “Speak out of school, you die in the shower.” They enter the cafeteria. Warden Mills says he hopes the inmates can put their differences aside and set at the same table. P-Dog refuses to negotiate while he is handcuffed. He says the leaders were put in the hole and the yard changed hands. The guards wanted the lockdown for overtime. The prison is a bank for the guards. The crips are working the prison alone while the other gangs have joined forces. P-Dog isn’t worried about the other gangs, he is worried about the guards.

The guards promised to treat the inmates like men. Give them decent food in the commissary and more time in the yard. Warden Mills wants to know what the guards offered in exchange for the promises. He says it was for taking out your child-murdering trash. Ed tells P-Dog he is dead. You better hurry and do it before I put a shank in your skull. Warden Mills drops the lockdown and orders Stevie to find out what P-Dog is talking about. The gang leaders are escorted back to their cells. The inmates celebrate when the cells unlock.

A sanitation worker (Ted Hallett) contacts law enforcement when he finds something wrapped in a blue tarp in a trash dumpster. The corner and police officer remove the tarp from the back of the trash truck. Ian cuts open the tarp and discover Hastings’ body. Mike says Hastings was working with Milo to get to Iris. Mike leaves the scene to look for Milo’s metal box. Kyle gives him his police radio because there is no cellular signal on the property.

Mike arrives at the property, where the metal box is buried. He looks around, doesn’t find anything, and leaves. At the cabin, Mike is assessing Milo’s maps when a black bear approaches. He unsuccessfully shoos the bear away from his bird feeder. He throws the bear a bag of marshmallows and says it is his last meal.

At the women’s prison, Sam is putting the inmates to bed. He walks up to Cherry’s cell for a peep show. She records him as he watches.

Mike returns to the property with a metal detector and shovel. The metal detector detects something in the group. He pokes around with the shovel and discovers Milo’s metal box as the episode comes to an end.

Mayor of Kingstown Review

The progression of the show has slowed to a crawl, thanks to a boatload of filler. If diversity is what they were shooting for, they failed miserably. The female inmate scenes were primarily African American. Should white people be upset they were excluded from the scenes, or should African Americans be upset, they are being represented as the majority of inmates?

There is a scene where the female inmates are studying human evolution. Is this all they could come up with? While Mike is being sent out to the same property twice and Sam is lollygagging around the prison, they come up with human evolution. Slashing about three episodes from the show would speed up the progress significantly.

The acting is spot-on, except for James Jordan who tries way too hard, and it shows. The episode deserves a 6.5.

  1. you show some thoughts of the scenes I would never come up with, Jay. Congrats. And yeah, totally a negligence the absolute majority of women inmates being African American. No need.

Absolutely impressed by the Jeremy R. performance.
