As the episode begins, we see Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd) scared and running through the woods. He is being followed by two people with a dog but he manages to escape and make it back into town after the sun goes down. Then, Laura Nielson (Joanne Froggatt) is interviewed by Karen Renton (Katherine Kelly) and Rory Maxwell (Danny Webb). Karen tells Laura and her attorney that the I don’t know routine isn’t going to work anymore. Then, she is confronted with the necklace found in the shipping container but Laura doesn’t understand how it got there. She claims someone took it when they put the car key in her flat.
She also doesn’t know why her Sat Nav would have that address on it since she has never been there. Karen urges Laura to tell then exactly what happen but her lawyer won’t let her speak. After that, Andrew manages to get some food and water. He goes out onto the beach and hides from a group of people before sneaking away. In the morning, Laura is transported to the courtroom. Her lawyer speaks to the judge and explains her client has a spotless record. The judge agrees with the defense and grants Laura bail as long as she’ll surrender her passport. She also has to report to the local police station every 24 hours.
Liam (Richie Campbell) is there to pick her up when she is released. She needs a second so he agrees to wait outside for her. She rejoins him seconds later. Liam offers to drop her off but she says there is somewhere she needs to be first. She wants to meet with Vanessa Harmon (Shelley Conn) because she wants this to end one way or another. She visits Vanessa and tells her about the evidence against her. Laura suspects someone messed with her sat nav and she wants Vanessa to find out who did it. She wants to know who would’ve had access to her vehicle before we jump back two weeks. Luke Earlham (Jamie Flatters) wakes up at the hospital.
He is told that his father is still missing. Next, Andrew makes it to the shipping container and opens it. He steps inside before turning the lights on. Then, he calls Oliver (Sam Spruell) and asks him to return. Andrew says he needs to convince people he is dead so he can get out of trouble. He also threatens Oliver with the recording so his old pa has no choice but to help him. Oliver agrees to help before Vanessa goes to work. She borrows a friend’s pass before getting in touch with the impound lot. Moments later, Vanessa calls Laura to tell her it is a dead end. Nobody got in to look at the car besides the people investigating her.
Laura believes someone on the inside is setting her up as well. Laura waits for Rory so she can talk to him. She accuses hi of altering the sat nav before she tells him about the man in the blue cap who has been helping Andrew. He tells her she is going to make matters worse. When Rory enters the station, Karen tells him that the tests on the blood splatter in the container were inconclusive. On Laura’s sat nav, there were no prints whatsoever so that is weird. Moments later, Laura speaks with a friend about her current situation. Her friend encourages her to go out and she does. She runs into Rory so she can confront him once again. He threatens to put her in jail if she keeps following him.
She manages to steal his phone during a scuffle before leaving. She checks his phone and cracks the passcode. She goes through his messages at home that night. She finds messages from Greg Maxwell discussing the value of her freedom. She also finds information about Greg overdosing several times in the past. She snaps pictures of that evidence for herself. The following day, Liam and Katy (Zoe Tapper) take the kids to the local park. Liam encourages Katy to speak with Laura and he tells her about the evidence against Laura. Katy tells Liam about finding the key on the floor at work. She says she handed it into lost property so they decide to check it out.
Laura gets a message from Greg on Rory’s phone. She meets up with him and asks him about the messages. He can’t believe she stole his dad’s phone and is trying to blackmail him with his overdose history. He threatens to have her arrested if he hears from her again. Katy and Liam make it to the hospital and speak with a woman behind the desk. They learn that someone by the name of Holden Caulfield checked out the key. Then, Katy convinces a friend nearby to check the CCTV footage for them. Since he owes her a favor, he agrees to do so. They check the footage and find out that Oliver was at the hospital and got the key.
Liam wonders how they can find him before Oliver shows up at a hospital. He notices a newspaper article about the woman who killed Andrew. He goes to his motel room and contacts Luke. He wants to meet up so they can speak about his mom. Laura goes to the station to speak with Maxwell. Meanwhile, Liam and Katy go to Carl and she tells him that she works with Winnie. They show him a picture of Oliver and he confirms it is the man he saw with Andrew. He also says Oliver had been staying at The Marina Inn. Rory meets with Laura and she admits to breaking into this cellphone. They step outside so they can chat in private. Meanwhile, Karen gets a call from the parole board and learns that Anthony Farr has been released.
Laura accuses Rory of tampering with the sat nav to prevent Greg’s overdoses from being released to the public. Rory tells her what is going to happen to his son and family is that information is leaked. She wants to know who sent that email. Despite the threats, Rory isn’t willing to budge. Next, Katy and Liam go to the motel and asks about their friend. The receptionist is suspicious since they don’t know the man’s name. They leave and decide to wait to see if the man returns. Renton is stopped by Michael because he wants to speak with her briefly. She is asked about her ex Anthony Farr. She says she hasn’t spoken to him. She learns that her ex beat up Stephanie Pike so badly that she died. She says Anthony would likely hide with his cousin Dan Walker.
When detective leaves, Karen gets a call from Laura but she doesn’t answer it. Laura tries to get in touch with someone at the department so she can tell them about Rory Maxwell but nobody is there to speak with her. When the call ends, she thinks about contacting Ian Davis. Liam and Katy talk about their relationship and it seems things are going to improve just before Oliver arrives. They try to follow him when he leaves in his car but they get stuck and he gets away. Then, they go to Laura’s place to tell her about Oliver. She believes Oliver is the one blackmailing Rory. We jump one week earlier to the shipping container. Oliver helps Andrew take his blood.
Andrew tells Oliver that he is done when he says he is done. Oliver wants to know where the recording is and he is suspicious that the police have it or Andrew is lying. They continue taking Andrew’s blood. After that, Luke speaks with a psychiatrist about his suicide attempt. He admits he wanted to kill himself but messed it up. He says his father is an evil liar. He also says his father is dead if he sees him.
Liar Review
It is hard to believe that the next episode is going to be the finale. That is crazy considering how little has happened this season. This episode wasn’t the worst but it wasn’t anything spectacular either. There is way too much going on at once. Why are we supposed to care about Karen Renton’s ex and him murdering a woman? What does that have anything to do with Laura and Andrew? The episode was too easy for Laura and her friends since they found out about Oliver and tracked him down so quickly.
Are we really supposed to believe that Laura managed to steal Rory’s phone and crack the password without any trouble? Not to mention she did that and tried to blackmail Rory and Greg without any repercussions. These things might be minor but they add up and take away from the show. I think a lot of people who liked the previous season are going to be disappointed with this one. It just doesn’t match the quality of the first. This episode scores a 6.5 out of 10. Previous recaps of Liar are available on Reel Mockery.
