Liar Season 2 Episode 3 Recap

andrew liar s02e03 recap

At the beginning of the episode, Laura (Joanne Froggatt) has a nightmare and dreams that Andrew (Ioan Gruffudd) is coming after her. Once she gets up, she looks out of the window and discovers that the media outside have not left yet. She goes outside and passed by before heading to the school. Her boss thought she wouldn’t come in but Laura wants to carry on as normal. She is told that it would be best for her to stay away for the time being. DI Karen Renton (Katherine Kelly) approaches her with more questions but Laura claims Karen is responsible for Ian leaving her. They chat back and forth a bit before Laura says there were many people who wanted Andrew dead.

Karen tells her a bit about detective work and says something tells her that Laura was responsible. Seconds later, Winnie (Amy Nuttall) calls Laura and tells her that they need to talk. We see that Winnie is at the docks and the fire has damaged the building. Liam (Richie Campbell) and Katy (Zoe Tapper) take the kids to the park before they chat about a man with bruises or something on his face. Katy encourages the kids to not say everything they mean since somethings might be mean. Liam has to leave after receiving a phone call. Liam allows Katy to keep the children before Laura meets with Winnie. Laura learns that the building went up in the middle of the night and Carl (Howard Charles) has gone missing.

Winnie can’t understand why Carl tried to burn this place down and she pleads with Laura to help find him. She also goes on about Carl washing his clothes in the middle of the night. They go back home and look at Carl’s call log online. They find a strange call so they decide to ring the number. They visit Jennifer a moment later. She tells them that she doesn’t know since she doesn’t remember every call she received. Laura explains she doesn’t trust the police since they let a serial rapist run free. Jennifer talks about her PTSD group and meeting Carl there. This is why she has spent time on the phone with Carl. She can’t help them find out it Carl did anything bad.

Meanwhile, Carl writes a note and pulls out a gun. We jump back and see Carl confronting Andrew on the boat. Carl wants Andrew to think about his wife and the women he hurt before the world turns black. They end up getting into a fight before Andrew is taken to the ground and handcuffed. Carl takes the boat out after that. We jump to the present and Carl begins loading his gun. Laura meets up with Vanessa (Shelley Conn). Laura explains she just came from seeing her other half. She tells Vanessa about Carl calling Jennifer last and that he might have been involved in Andrew’s brother. Laura wants Vanessa to speak to Jennifer about it.

Katy returns home with the kids and things about calling Laura but doesn’t. Jennifer goes home and finds Vanessa cooking. Vanessa distracts her and begins looking at Jennifer’s text messages. She finds one from Carl before Jennifer catches. We jump back three weeks and see Jennifer meet with Carl at the docks. Vanessa calls Laura and confirms that Carl told Jennifer he did it. Laura leaves and meets with them outside of the police station. Laura says she wants to know exactly what happened. She learns about Carl overpowering Andrew and throwing him into the water. We jump back and Carl tells Jennifer he is thinking about turning himself into police.

She wants to get rid of the evidence and live with what he has done. Jennifer agrees to tell them where Carl is hiding out before Laura asks them to hold off telling the police yet. She has been hiding something about when Andrew died. Laura returns to Winnie and they decide to go see Carl together. Katy gets a visit from Rory (Danny Webb) moments later. Katy is adamant that her sister wouldn’t have done it. Katy claims she popped around her sister’s house and saw her there but didn’t go in. Rory isn’t eager to believe her and encourages her to think carefully before involving herself. Katy gets the kids to tell Rory about going to Laura’s house and seeing her through the windows. Her son says yes.

Back at the police station, Rory speaks on the phone while others look through Laura’s vehicle. Karen tells Rory that the battery was flat. Rory believes the case means something to Karen since she is going after Laura so hard. Karen explains that her ex used to hit her and she always made excuses for him. She realized it was never going to stop so she went downstairs and grabbed a knife. She thought about killing him but reported him and got him sent to prison instead. Katy pours out her wine before Liam arrives. He wants to know where she has been. Liam tells her that she keeps digging a hole for herself and he doesn’t want her to lie to him. He is angry that she used the kids to lie to the detective.

Laura and Winnie make it in time to prevent Carl from killing himself. Carl tells them about tossing Andrew into the sea. Laura explains that the detectives have put Andrew’s death at 6 days ago and not 3 weeks so that would rule out Carl as the killer. Carl promises that he never tried to frame Laura before he tells her exactly what happened. He tosses Andrew into the water with handcuffs on. Andrew gets angry while thinking about Laura and uses the scalpel to cut the cuffs. He swims to the surface after that. Andrew makes it to shore before stalking Laura as she goes out on a kayak. When she returns, he confronts her and blames her for her son trying to take his life.

He believes it is time for them to talk. She tells Andrew that everyone knows the truth now before asking what he wants. He says he experienced a near death experience and all he could see what Laura and everything she did to his son. He says Laura stole his life so he is going to steal hers. She runs away and calls police before we jump to the present. Laura walks with Winnie and Carl before they go into the police station and Laura gets a call from Liam. She visits Katy and complains about what Katy did. Katy thought she was helping before Laura tells her about Andrew saying he was going to steal her life. She storms out after telling Katy to stop. Vanessa returns home and complains to Jennifer that she lied to her.

Jennifer wants to tell her it won’t happen again but she can’t. She explains herself and says she loves Vanessa. Jennifer doesn’t believe Vanessa would send the killer to prison for killing Andrew either but Vanessa says it isn’t up to them. Laura goes home and tells the media that she did not have a hand in Andrew’s murder. Karen goes to Rory’s place and overhears him fighting with his son. His son leaves before Karen says they got something from Laura’s navigation information. They go to the location Laura last put in and check a shipping container. They step inside and Karen is surprised by what they find before the episode ends.

Liar Review

I have a feeling a lot of viewers are going to be very disappointed with Liar this season because it is not nearly as good as the first season. I wasn’t thrilled with the first but it was many times better than this one. There are way too many new characters including some that are downright annoying. It is hard to take the story seriously at this point. Most everything that happened in the first season has been flipped on its head and it is now looking like Andrew tried to frame Laura for his murder.

I have a feeling the season will end once they reveal that Andrew Earlham isn’t dead. I can’t see any way they can end the season and make up for how bad it has been so far. The episode scores a 6 out of 10. Previous recaps of Liar can be found on Reel Mockery.
