More Handsome Than Joe Jonas – Episode 6 begins with Ruby Yao (Stephanie Hsu) pleading for AJ’s (Zosia Mamet) forgiveness for sleeping with Zack Bridgerton (Andre Hyland). This goes on for several minutes before AJ hears enough and tells both Ruby and Zack to get out of her apartment.
Ruby shows up in the middle of the night with everything she owns at Richie Diane’s (Michael Angarano) apartment. After a bit of joking, he lets her in. Over beer, she explains exactly why AJ kicked her out. Although he is still at the apartment, things are not going much better for Zack. AJ practically tells him that there is nothing he can do to stop her from breaking up with him. Apparently, even getting up to 200,000 followers and getting approached by a luggage company isn’t enough. He realizes how serious she is when she starts throwing out all the things he bought her, including Free William.
Ruby tries to rationalize why she slept with Zack as she brushes her teeth. Richie tells her not to beat herself up because a lot of people seek physical attention when they are in a bad place emotionally. She agrees but doesn’t know what to think when she comes out of the bathroom to find a nearly naked Richie, wearing a Joe Jona’s mask. He tells her that he is trying to help her get back into the idea of Cyrano sex since both Joe and Isaac have boyish jawlines.
After a brief debate about whether Isaac is as sexy as Joe, Ruby tells Richie that she is taking the day off tomorrow and the two of them will be visiting Aubrey (Alexandra Shipp). Ruby describes her as the one who got away. For the first time, Richie becomes slightly upset when he tries to tell Ruby about his new job and she acts like she could care less.
Isaac doesn’t feel much better when he shows up the following morning to find that Ruby has taken the day off. It doesn’t take Ruby’s boss long to see Isaac’s frustration and attempts to address it. This doesn’t help matters.
Before Ruby and Richie can warn Aubrey, they run into Richie’s ex-girlfriend, Chelsea (Chloe Fineman), who is not at all happy to discover that he isn’t dying. She’s even far less happy when he suggests they stay broken up. Detective Brenowitz (David Denman) not only watches all this from his unmarked cruiser but h also watches the two of them go into the tattoo shop to meet Aubrey.
Unlike most of the others, Aubrey immediately recognizes Ruby. She also appears much more accommodating when Ruby convinces her to change her ax –throwing date to give her a tattoo. Richie makes his presence known for the first time when he comments on Ruby getting an R tattooed on her forearm. She casually plays this off as if their relationship means nothing, which causes Aubrey to realize that Ruby treated her the same way. All while Aubrey goes on to explain Ruby’s complex intimacy issues, Brenowitz is shown involved in some kind of physical altercation in the background.
It’s as if Ruby’s eyes are opening for the first time as Aubrey continues to explain her intimacy issues. By the time Ruby realizes that she’s known how to fix herself all along, a bullet from the altercation outside smashes the window and hits Aubrey in the head.
After the incident, Ruby and Richie return to his apartment where Ruby composes a letter to her father and he stares into spaces, covered in blood. Although Ruby pretends to be fine, she eventually breaks down. She even continues giving up at one point but Richie convinces her otherwise. He even inspires her to reach out to AJ, which he does and gets ignored.
It turns out that Ruby’s next potential victim is her boss Brad (Ryan Pinkston). By the time Ruby and Richie break the news to him at work, AJ shows up to unveil Brad as the spell caster. While deleting photos of her and Ruby, AJ came across an old video of Brad putting the hex on her.
Laid Review
I really enjoyed this episode. Once it got going. The entire last 5 minutes was a laugh a minute. The whole scenario where Aubrey was killed and Brenowitz realized he had his body cam off was hilarious. I never say Brad coming either, but when you go back and think about it, he was constantly mouthing off about Ruby. It should have practically been obvious, but I somehow missed it. That said, this was an excellent episode and I can’t wait for the next. This one gets an easy 6 out of 10.
