Sex Cluster – The episode begins with an excited AJ (Zosia Mamet) bursting into Ruby Yao’s (Stephanie Hsu) room with her recently compiled timeline of Ruby’s sex life. From the sheer amount of detail, it isn’t hard to see that AJ has put a lot of thought and time into the board. Despite all that, Ruby easily points out several mistakes. Although Robert is the exception because he is still alive, things become especially awkward when AJ mentions not showing the board to Zack Bridgerton (Andre Hyland) because he can’t handle death. Ruby and AJ continue to discuss theories until Ruby mentions that she might have her own personal serial killer. AJ not only appears enthused by this prospect but she says that after five hills, it’s likely that she would have received a trophy. No sooner than AJ says this and she receives a front door alert about a delivery for Ruby. Ruby immediately takes the human head-sized box to a local Detective (David Denman) at the police station.
Ruby not only spends the next several minutes trying to explain her sex talker at the prescient but she sends the entire force a copy of her sex timeline. After listening with frustration and amazement, the detective gets around to opening the box Ruby is so adamant is a human head. It turns out to be a bundle of snow globes. He packages them back up and sends her on her way.
After leaving the police station, Ruby shows up at Isaac’s (Tommy Martinez) place 2 and a half hours early for their 1 o’clock meeting. Despite this, Isaac invites her in and inadvertently reveals his love for musicals. Their discussion doesn’t go much further before Isaac asks her about the situation with her friend. Much to Ruby’s embarrassment, she admits to never getting around to discussing it because of everything else going on in her life. This discussion is soon interrupted when Ruby notices the bat and blood stain. When asked, Isaac blames this on Merci’s (Olivia Holt) affinity for keeping the windows open but being allergic to the mesh material. Because she is allergic to the filter material, Isaac claims he is constantly fighting off squirrels.
A frantic Ruby returns home to share her discovery with AJ. This doesn’t go as she planned because AJ shows her Robert’s obituary and tells her that stalkers cannot give people cancer. Ruby dwells on this until she learns that her sex cluster is next up on the timeline. Apparently, there was a time after Ruby’s first heartbreak that she felt the need to do an abundance of fu*king, sucking, swiping, and wiping. Ruby relaxes a bit when AJ tells her that the curse might require full member penetration. If this is the case, several members of the cluster might walk away without a scratch. This is when Ruby comes up with the idea to warn her past lovers.
AJ and Ruby are on their way to warn Ruby’s previous lovers when they run into The Clog Dropper, Jill Blanch (Susan Berger). This brief encounter does not go as expected but inspires Ruby to get on with her task. Ruby’s first meeting with Simon (Brandon Perea) doesn’t go much better than the meeting with Jill. Although the rest of the meetings play out in a bit of a fast-forward motion, they don’t appear to go any better than the meeting with Simon. Some men think Ruby is joking, some think they are being pranked, some think they have kids, and one even denies knowing who she is.
Despite Ruby’s depressing venture with her ex-lovers, there is one named Lug, who offers some hope when he attributes Ruby to saving his life. Apparently, when he was dating Ruby, he was a morbidly obese man. One night after a car crash and seeing Ruby flee from the cops on foot, he was inspired to change his life. And that he did, Lug is now not only incredibly fit but he is a personal trainer who helps and inspires others to get in shape.
AJ and Ruby are recapping their evening when AJ receives a call from Zack, who is in a tizzy about dropping to 39 subscribers. Ruby slips away while AJ attempts to calm Zack. The episode ends with Ruby being kidnapped after leaving AJ.
Laid Review
I certainly did not see that cliffhanger coming. I figured this whole debacle was going to turn out to be something lame, like a coincidence or Ruby being dead herself. The kidnapping throws a wrench into the entire story because it makes it seem as if someone is out to get Ruby. This was probably the best episode of the series, for me. Although they were brief and awkward, I really enjoyed Ruby trying to warn her lovers about the dangers ahead.
The whole Lug scenario only made the episode that much better. I’d have to give the episode a 5.6 out of 10. Get more Laid recaps here. Learn more about our advertising packages by clicking the link.
