FB To The T – Episode 2 begins with Ruby (Stephanie Hsu) and AJ (Zosia Mamet) learning that David died of sepsis. It is only seconds after this that Ruby remembers also agreeing to adopt Brandon’s Saint Bernard. Their discussion doesn’t get much further than this thanks to the arrival of Zack Bridgerton (Andre Hyland) in his wedding attire, which happens to be a kimono. When Zack is gone, AJ asks Ruby how she feels about Robert’s wedding. Although Ruby plays it down, AJ reminds her that there was a time when she was going to marry Robert. Ruby says that even though it feels like ancient history, it is still a reminder that everyone has figured it out but her. AJ tries to assure her by telling her she is exactly where she should be.
While Ruby jokes that Robert could have at least given her a plus-one to the wedding, AJ realizes Brandon, Jeffrey, and David were all born in a small California town that had a toxic spill the same year they were born. Ruby tells her that it’s just a coincidence and adds that she has plenty of other exes who are doing fine, including Robert.
Later that day at the bar where AJ works, she and Ruby discuss another ex who happens to be doing better than fine, Stu Jackward. As Ruby reminisces about her and Stu’s time together, she notices AJ paying her phone more attention than normal. When asked, AJ admits that she broke up with Zack and is trying to erase all evidence of their relationship. Although this is briefly discussed, their attention is soon drawn to the TV, where Stu just took a foul ball to the head.
Due to the recent death of Stu, Ruby visits Dr. Banooni to get a pap smear. Much to Ruby’s surprise, Banooni gives her a clean bill of health. Despite this, Ruby still thinks something is wrong and asks Banooni if it is possible that something in her vagina is harming people. Banooni initially assumes Ruby is talking about an STD but soon learns that isn’t the case once Ruby explains things. Although Banooni assures Ruby that her vagina isn’t causing these random deaths, Ruby doesn’t appear all that relieved.
Before meeting with Isaac (Tommy Martinez) to discuss his parent’s anniversary party, Ruby relays the good news about her exam to AJ. Isaac loves the venue as much as Ruby does and the meeting begins on a fairly good note. It however gets more awkward as it goes thanks to Ruby. Despite all that, not only do Isaac and Ruby have a good time together but it appears that they have a lot in common, including love for Billy Crystal movies. At one point, when they begin discussing the venue’s capacity, Ruby learns that Isaac has a girlfriend who just happens to be a marine biologist. The meeting doesn’t last much longer than this.
AJ is trying to connect the dots between the deaths of Ruby’s exes when Ruby returns home after a great session with Debra (Elizabeth Bowen). This discussion quickly leads into AJ’s problems and this is when Ruby realizes AJ is using Ruby’s problems as a distraction for her own. With this new discovery and her clean bill of health, Ruby tells AJ that they need to be focusing on living their best lives and that’s what they set out to do at the wedding.
Unfortunately, the wedding does not go at all as planned, especially when Ruby embarrasses herself by confronting Robert for not giving her a plus one to the wedding. After being embarrassed, Ruby finds herself at the bar next to Zack, who is also not having such a great time. A lot of this probably has to do with the fact that AJ is pretending to have such a great time. Either way, Zack and Ruby soon find themselves away from the wedding, smoking and drinking.
At one point, Zack notices that Ruby is down and asks her about it. She proceeds to tell him about her situation with Robert. Although Zack agrees with Robert’s opinion of Ruby, he offers an interesting insight that changes how Ruby views him. By the end of the night, it would appear they are actually hitting it off, and this is confirmed when she wakes up next to him the following morning.
Both Ruby and Zack spend the better part of the morning freaking out over the dalliance before Ruby realizes that it is Friday and she has to work. Several minutes later she arrives hung over for the smelt tasting portion of Isaac’s planning. Matters only get worse when Merci (Olivia Holt) shows up unannounced.
As the tasting commences, Ruby learns more about Merci, her connection with Isaac’s mother, and the charity that she volunteers with. This is all interrupted when Merci receives a call from the lab. With Merci gone, Isaac notices Ruby’s depressed mood and asks her about it. Although she doesn’t tell him everything, she tells him enough that he can put two and two together when he notices all the missed calls from AJ. Isaac also tells Ruby that it’s best to apologize as soon as possible to AJ that way they can go ahead and begin moving forward.
Ruby returns home later that evening with the intention of telling AJ the truth. She never gets the opportunity thanks to AJ blurting out that she and Zack got back together. Despite AJ’s sleeping with the cellist and Zack’s sleeping with a stranger, they decided to put their differences aside and move forward. Before the conversation gets much further, AJ tells Ruby about Robert’s speech about him having lymphoma. Even more troubling is the fact that the men are dying in the order that Ruby slept with them. This is practically how the episode ends.
Laid Review
I have never seen the original series, so I don’t have a whole lot to compare to, but I must admit the series is starting to grow on me. The original may have been much better, I don’t know. If it was created a decade or two ago, it’s safe to assume that is the case because a lot of today’s raunchy lingo and talk ruins these shows.
I don’t know how many decent shows I’ve seen in the past year that were made so much worse by the raunchy contemporary characters, their personalities, and their lingo. That said, I enjoyed the Ruby/Zack confrontation and what it is going to bring to the table for the remainder of the series. This is practically a live grenade, charged and ready to go off at any minute. I’d give the episode a 5.4 out of 10.
