Mallory – The episode opens with Craig Foster (Craig Robinson) leaving Isaiah Foster (Rell Battle) a pleading voicemail. Shayla (Melanie Field) alerts visitors outside. Emerging from his office, Craig finds himself face-to-face with the Boones. He asks Jackie Boone (Dot-Marie Jones) if she needed to bring her entire family to deliver the berries. She says they are backup to renegotiate a new deal. He asks if she wants more money. She demands he add her entire family to the Henry’s Farm employee log, so they can get medical coverage. Ray-Nathan Boone (Joe Massingill) suggests asking for cash. She reminds them of Aunt Trish’s $190,000 brain tumor operation. When Craig points out how expensive healthcare is for businesses these days, the Bonne’s erupt in an argument between HMOs and PPOs.
Farm Office – Craig tells Jillian Glopp (Claudia O’Doherty) that he has discovered a way to cover Boones’ healthcare to keep the farm open until harvest next year. It will only take refinancing the mortgage, deferring tax payments, selling the truck and the forklift, and firing Shayla. Jillian was on board until he mentioned the firing. His defense is that she is a terrible employee and as office manager, she’s costing them $30,000 a year. She not only reminds him of the non-firing agreement but of how getting fired from Big Pool Waterpark ultimately led to her homelessness. He says that she hated that job and was happy when he met her. Vowing to not do that to another person, Jillian says she’ll pay the salary herself. If necessary she’ll go back to her weekend gigs. He attempts to sway her by pointing out how much she’ll need to cut back, possibly even sell Mallory, her Kia. He says if she has a problem being the bad guy, he’ll play the part and calls Shayla into the office.
Jillian attempts to sidetrack Craig by commenting on Shayla’s new haircut. When she admits that she didn’t actually get the haircut, Craig brings up her leaving early. Jillian continues interrupting Craig’s every attempt to fire her until Shayla receives a call. Craig’s attempts to thwart Jillian’s selling of the Kia continue with him asking how she’ll get to work and reminding her that the billboard car failed the required Florida emission tests. Adding that it only blows hot air doesn’t deter her resolve.
Carwash – While waiting for the Kia Forte at the automated car wash, Craig tells Jillian that she deserves to be happy. She asks how being happy matters if it comes at the expense of Shayla’s life. He counters that by pointing out how isn’t responsible for all the bad in the world. Jillian says it isn’t about the entire world; it’s about one person she knows. He says that people get hurt in business, and she goads him by asking about Isaiah. He acknowledges that Isaiah’s injury sucked, but he sleeps well with the decisions that were made. Wanting to get back to the business at hand, Jillian realizes that the Kia has mysteriously vanished.
The carwash manager, Andre (Chris Coppola) apologizes for the Kia being taken. Although he claims he’ll do anything to help, he refuses their requests to see the security footage without a warrant. Officer Lipscomb’s (Clint Culp) attention is drawn away from his mobile phone game when Jillian mentions how easy it would be for him to get one. He tells her that getting a warrant isn’t that easy while reminding the group that Miami is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. He explains that 50 murders have already occurred in the little time it took her to explain the missing car.
Later at the carwash, Jillian tells Craig that at least if the insurance pays out for the car Shayla will get to keep her job. When he claims that the payout will take too long, she says that her insurance guys, Good Uncles, are great and even come with a five-star Business Bureau rating. She confirms that she isn’t referring to the Better Business Bureau when he asks. An automated voice lets her know that all Uncles are tied up on calls with 65 nieces and nephews ahead of her. Shayla arrives in the station wagon.
In The Station Wagon – Craig and Jillian use the return trip to the farm to break the news about the firing to Shayla. Shayla tells him that she really needs the job and is already living paycheck to paycheck. Jillian attempts to drown out Shayla’s rambling about moving back in with her verbally abusive mother before she orders the car to be turned around.
Car Wash – Bursting into Andre’s office, Jillian’s demands to see the security footage are once again met with claims that she’ll need a warrant. He brags about firing people for meaningless things when she attempts sympathy. Craig asks the man why he has to be such an a$$hole when he attempts to physically remove her from the office. Jillian needs little help, as she wrenches his arm behind his back and forces him to reveal the footage. After several clips of ladies bent over vacuuming their vehicles, Jillian uses her phone to snap a shot of the carjacker.
Reuniting outside with Shayla, Craig is psyched about Jillian’s impressive karate display and Sahyla is pumped that Jillian is following through with her promises. Shayla says that she makes promises all the time but never follows through with them. Craig points out that a single black-and-white shot of a random scumbag won’t get them far. Shayla says if the guy is a scumbag and he’s from around here, she most likely went to high school with him. She claims her school had a thousand scumbags per grade and after six years, she got well acquainted with most of them. Seeing the photo, it takes her mere seconds to identify the guy as Donnie Cartwright (Kale Clauson). Using Instagram, Jillian learns that the works at Diamond Muffler and Lube.
Diamond Muffler And Lube – Seeing the draped American flag, razor wire, and ripped-out car seats, Craig immediately suggests firing Shayla as an alternative. Jillian vows to keep her promise. When he says fine, stay on hold with Good Uncles until they pick up, she admits they might never pick up. After making the admission, the light jazz hold music on her phone ends for just a few seconds and resumes. Shayla asks Jillian to say hello to Donnie for her when she goes in. Finding Donnie with several associates inside, she lets them know she’s there for the Kia. Donnie laughs with claims that he wouldn’t waste his time on a $12,000 car. She not only points out that the car is worth $16,545 but unveils the photo and threatens to show it to the cops. He claims cops don’t investigate stolen Kia Fortes, but he will need the phone just in case. When tells him that she’s on hold, he orders his henchman into action. Craig tells Jillian to hand the phone over and she holds it out. Before the guy grabs it, she grabs a can of WD40 and squirts it in the guy’s eyes. Donnie’s second associate attacks Craig, rendering him harmless with a single gut punch. Donnie watches in fear before telling her that they put a new VIN on the car and sold it to the big used car lot, Car Wow.
Car Wow – The sympathetic clerk apologizes for Jillian’s experience before taking the matter to her manager. Returning, she says that it’s against store policy to purchase stolen vehicles. Jillian points out the Kia right behind her. The clerk offers her the option of leaving her phone number on the tablet and she’ll get a link to a website where she can file a formal complaint. After entering her number, Jillian learns that she was duped into a market scam. The clerks’ explanations for opting out of the marketing ploy are interrupted by Jillian’s requests to speak with a live person. As the clerk offers her to speak with their online virtual assistant, Craig asks why his phone is blowing up with Car Wow alerts. The clerk attributes the texts to the store’s Wi-Fi. Before the clerk can explain how to opt-out, he gets a message from Isaiah.
Outside alone, Craig learns that Isaiah is fine, no longer upset, and has been spending his time in Phoenix. He adds that he even has a job and met a special lady. Isaiah claims to finally understand why Craig is so adamant about doing things the right way. Craig spends several minutes rehashing all the things he did wrong last season. When he ends with reminders that he’s the reason Rodney Lamonca (Tim Heidecker) wants him dead, Isaiah takes responsibility. Before quickly ending the call, he tells Craig he loves him and promises to talk again soon.
Jillian joins him outside with announcements that she’ll never get her car back. Craig vows to help her and says speaking with Isaiah has completely changed his view. She questions how they’ll do that and the continued texts give him an idea. They find Ricky and request to test drive the Kia.
Test Drive – Jillian takes Ricky on the ride of his life and nearly scares him to death. During the ride, Craig asks Ricky about the vehicle’s Bluetooth. Jillian answers by revealing that her phone is already paired with the car’s signal. She continues to explain how Car Wow unrightfully came into possession of her vehicle while driving like a daredevil. As they return to the Car Wow, Ricky runs screaming from the vehicle. Craig congratulates Jillian and she admits that she can’t sell Mallory. That was part of the reason that she went so crazy, no matter how much she told herself she was trying to help Shayla.
Shayla doesn’t handle the news well and busts Jillian’s nose. She’s shown later cruising down the highway with a huge grin on her face, despite the leaking nose. She and Craig also make their first $150,000 berry delivery to Green Bounty Organic Rep (Brendan Jennings).
Killing It Review
Despite feeling entirely like filler, the episode was surprisingly enjoyable. As far as I can tell, not much applied to the main story arc, but the episode was fulfilling. Although she is a key part of the show with a caring and sensitive disposition, Jillian has never been a favorite. I felt the episode showcased her in a more flattering light. Getting to see her stand up for herself was pleasurable. Craig and Isaiah’s reconnecting was also a plus because Isaiah has always been an enjoyable member of the series. Hopefully, that’s the end of Shayla. All in all, a good episode that deserves a 5.3 out of 10.
