From the director of Cropsey, Joshua Zeman, comes this horror documentary. Although the documentary was released in March of this year, our review comes in the nick of time for Halloween. Does it follow the same success that Cropsey achieved approximately five years earlier? Continue reading below to find out.
The documentary follows the cases of several urban legends including the Candy Man, Baby Sitter killer, Killer Clowns and the Lover’s Lane Killer. As the documentary unwraps, it covers each of the legends and traces their routes to real crimes. It is fairly interesting to see this new take on old urban legends, however those who like to follow old criminal cases will likely not discover anything new or original, in the descriptions of the criminal cases. Nonetheless, crime lovers will still find these segments fascinating.
Rachel Mills and Joshua Zeman travel to each location of the crimes and interview locals. While it is interesting to see the transformation of the old crime scenes, Zeman is a little overly dramatic in his presentation. Visiting crime scenes and cemeteries at night is simply ineffective, in this regard. As much as Zeman likes to believe and he definitely emphasizes it constantly, this isn’t ghost hunting. Visiting the areas during the day would have brought the same effect, only with better lighting.
Although the subject material has been explored numerous times before, the new approach is refreshing. Call me disturbing, but the old criminal cases always interest me, despite seeing nothing new in this film. Still, the film does drive home the point that fact is stranger and usually scarier than fiction. I could do without the over dramatization from Zeman, but this shouldn’t stop you from watching this documentary. It deserves at least a 7 out of 10 for compiling all of the case information together to create an interesting and compelling formula and a decent documentary. The documentary is currently available for free on Hulu.
