Joan Series 1 Episode 3 Recap

joan sophie turner episode 1 tv show

As the third episode of Joan begins, Benny Boisie (Frank Dillane) meets Joan Hannington (Sophie Turner) at a restaurant a week later. They talk about breaking into a house. Boisie says a woman lives there alone. Hugo claims the woman drinks a lot. His man at the auction house valued it this morning. Boisie suspects she got it valued for insurance purposes. Joan suggests she’s already got a legit buyer who will come looking for it when it’s gone. Joan says she can find a way in and swap the pictures so they can sell it right away. Before long, Joan manages to come up with a sob story to get into the woman’s house. Mrs. Taylor-Brown (Caroline Harker) invites her in for a drink. They complain about men. Taylor-Brown lets her spend the night. Joan says she might slip out in the night if her friends come early.

In the middle of the night, Joan gets up and opens the door so Boisie can come inside. The dog barks so they give the dog sausage. Joan thinks they’re fine because she put a Valium in the woman’s nightcap. Once they get the painting, they’re interrupted by Mr. Taylor-Brown (Roger Ringrose). Joan causes a distraction and Boisie pulls a gun on the man. Joan runs upstairs and escapes through the window while Boisie fights with the man. They escape with the painting a short time later. Boisie insists he wasn’t going to use the gun. Later, Joan admits she’s worried that they could identify her. She doubts they can sell the painting now. Boisie leaves and makes Joan mad. Joan grabs some money and leaves. She retrieves the diamonds she buried earlier. Joan goes to another shop where she tells King (Tomi May) she is selling loose stones. King claims she’s dealing with cut glass.

He says he might be able to give her a few quid. Joan believes they’re worth more than that. King thinks he should hold onto them and call his mate from the cop shop. Joan grabs them and flees. She goes to a restaurant and looks at a picture of Kelly. Boisie catches up with her before long. He gives her a letter from social services. Joan learns they want to visit and check the suitability of her new living arrangements. She alleges men have been pushing her around forever and keeping things from her. She’s not going to have it anymore. Joan is willing to show him the diamonds if he is honest with her. Later, Joan makes it clear that she’s not a snitch. Boisie takes her to his warehouse. They go inside and start talking about their past. They had nothing as kids. Joan says her dad beat her. Boisie claims his mom picked a man over him.

One day, she said he could come back so she could claim family allowance. Boisie convinces her to leave the diamonds there where they’ll be safe. He also lets her choose something for herself. The next day, Joan calls Southernwell Social Services to say she’s still waiting for a visit from a social worker. They’re not very helpful. While she waits, Joan sees a commercial for Sapphire Goldsmith’s in London. She ends up going there to look around. Joan overhears a woman talking about a piece of jewelry. Later, Joan tells Boisie that she still needs money. She wants to earn her own money. Joan wants to make sure Kelly never wishes she was back with the Ashbury family. She’s seen a ring she wants to steal and it’s worth 250 grand. Joan will convince them she’s a rich American. Boisie doesn’t want to close the shop to help.

Later, Albie shows up at the flat. They’re going to work together. Joan explains she needs help selling what she steals. They go to King to tell him they need a piece made up. Joan shows King what she wants. If he makes the fake ring, she’ll give him the real deal when she brings it back. She wants 80 grand of the 250 grand. King eventually agrees to help them out. Joan tells Boisie about the plan when they return. Boisie ends up joining Joan at the airport before the crime. She makes him leave. In the morning, Joan checks out the fake ring. After a call, Joan drops the ring. She puts it in a tissue and puts it in her purse. Joan goes to the shop to check out the ring and waits for Albie. While she’s trying on the ring, Albie finally arrives. Albie pulls the salesman to the side to discuss the price while Joan rushes to swap the rings. Boisie ends up entering the shop and interrupting them.

They all leave. Albie offers to come with Joan to King’s in case he tries anything funny. After Joan gets the money from King, she leaves. Joan goes back to Boisie and they have sex on top of the money. After that, they hang out with Nancy and Val. Boisie calls Joan perfect and says he loves her even more. He asks Joan to marry him. Joan agrees to marry him. After passing out, Joan hears the doorbell. Mrs. May (Dorothy Atkinson) comes in and finds the empty alcohol bottles. Joan insists it’s a one-off and won’t happen once Kelly is there. May says Kelly is thriving with the Ashburys. They’ve asked if they can adopt Kelly. No one will do anything without due process. Joan decides to their residence and checks on Kelly in the middle of the night. She hides when Mrs. Ashbury comes into the room.

Joan Review

The third episode of Joan finally had a big heist although it wasn’t really that exciting in the big scheme of things. It’s really starting to feel like the series is only going to skim the surface while altering the facts to suit a modern audience. Through three episodes, there is a great deal that has been left out. Other things are just corny and not that interesting.

The series is supposedly about Joan’s desperate attempt to get her daughter back, but it doesn’t seem like she’s ever really tried. The series has made the character very unlikable so it’s not easy to cheer for her. The show needed to give us more reasons to legitimately care about the character and her journey to reunite with her daughter.

We also didn’t need all the smooching and sex scenes on top of money. It’s really bad considering a good story was already laid out here. Joan Hannington’s life obviously isn’t this boring and there has to be at least one reason to sympathize with her. Her childhood hasn’t been explored. Her relationship with her abusive husband was barely touched on.

There is obviously a good story here, but it’s clearly not going to be in this series. The fourth episode scores a 4.5 out of 10. Recaps of Joan can be found here. Find out how to support our independent site at this link. Learn more about advertising with us here. See what others are saying here.
