Masterpiece, iTV, and Mammoth Screen are teaming up for a four-part television miniseries that will reimagine Henry Fielding’s classic novel, The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling. The show will follow Tom Jones as he embarks on a complicated journey to find real love. Solly McLeod will take over the lead role of hero Tom Jones and will be joined by Sophie Wilde as the heroine Sophia Western.
Tom Jones is written by Gwyneth Hughes, directed by Georgia Paris, and produced by Benjamin Greenacre. Gwyneth Hughes spoke about the announcement saying, “This is a classic adaptation with a wise soul and a great big smile on its face.”
Mammoth Screen is best known for its involvement in the Poldark and Victoria television series. Georgia Paris called the production “an escapist romp into the sights, sounds, and textures of 18th century England.”
Tom Jones will receive funding from Northern Ireland Screen and will film entirely on location in and around Belfast this autumn. Solly McLeod is also a part of the upcoming 2022 television series The Rising while Sophie Wilde appeared in television shows Eden and You Don’t Know Me.
