In the 4th episode of Indian Summers, we’re introduced to Jaya (Hasina Haque). The ragged woman is shown scavenging through the wood, during the opening of the episode. At the same time, the Viceroy, Lord Willingdon (Patrick Malahide) returns to town. Bhupinder (Ash Nair) informs Ralph Whelan (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), who quickly readies himself to meet with the Lord. When he heads downstairs, he runs into Eugene (Edward Hogg), who informs him that he and Madeleine (Olivia Grant) are leaving for Chicago.
When given the chance to keep Madeleine around, Ralph blows her off with a snarky remark. At the Dalal house, Aafrin (Nikesh Patel) receives a case full of books from Ralph. The books will prepare him for the upcoming exam. Aafrin returns and checks on the stolen evidence, before we return to Ralph. Ralph is informed that Chandru has been declared insane and his motives unknown, due to the lost evidence. Ralph sets up a plan, in order to reclaim the evidence, while relying on a list of individuals, who were questioned the day the evidence was stolen.
Next, Sarah Raworth (Fiona Glascott) learns about Alice’s lies from her friend. Ian McLeod (Alexander Cobb) meet with Cynthia Coffin (Julie Walters) and his uncle, Stafford Armitage (Richard McCabe). Armitage is sent away on a train, after telling Ian to take care of his garden. Aafrin meets up with Ralph and learns how to play golf. Unfortunately, he isn’t very good. At this time, he also encounters the Viceroy, who commends him for his actions. Lord Willingdon questions Ralph about his age and future, which forces Ralph to acknowledge Madeleine.
Back at the mansion, Eugene attempts to convince Madeleine that Ralph is terrible for her, but she refuses to listen. Instead, she speaks with Ralph and agrees to meet the Lord. Afterwards, Sarah encounters Alice (Jemima West) and questions her about her lies. Alice is startled and questions exactly what Sarah wants. She responds that she only wants to help, which creates for an awkward scenario. Meanwhile, Lord Willingdon and Ralph speak politics and the minorities wanting their own representation. He insists Gandhi is against the idea and wants all Hindus under the same flag.
They decide to bring in the leader of the Untouchables, Dr Ambedkar, in order to get a disturbance. Meanwhile, Cynthia and Ian watch Ramu Sood (Alyy Khan) work on the Armitage farm. Cynthia insists they’ll figure out a way to get back the property. That night, Dougie Raworth (Craig Parkinson) returns home and the most awkward sex scene ever happens with his wife. At the missionary school, Leena Prasad (Amber Rose Revan) and Adam (Shachin Sailesh Kumar) overhear a noise outside. We see Jaya prowling around outside of the school.
That night, Aafrin meets with his lover, Sita (Ellora Torchia). The pair are spied on by Alice, who runs away and drops one of her garments. Aafrin picks it up and hangs onto it. The next day, the Lord is introduced to Madeleine and Alice. Aafrin also arrives and is ridiculed for his new suit. Ian is shown burning all of his uncle’s belongings, before Ramu shows up and offers him a partnership. At the mansion, Aafrin learns that the army is going around houses searching for the missing evidence. He runs off and gets stuck in a room with Alice. He writes a note for his sister and gives it to Alice, while instructing her to give it to Sita.
Alice agrees and runs out into the night. She stops to read the note, which tells Sooni to destroy the certificate. She hands it over to Sita, who promises to give it to Aafrin’s family. Sita makes it to Aafrin’s home, but doesn’t hand over the note. At the club, Ian tells Cynthia about Ramu’s good gesture, but she insists this isn’t how they do business. She informs him about Armitage’s death and insists Ramu is now a murderer. The army discovers the evidence in Aafrin’s home.
Ralph confronts Aafrin and takes him aside, but insists the search for the evidence came up empty. Instead, he asks him whether or not he should marry Madeleine. Sita is shown in her room reading Aafrin’s note. Aarfin searches his box and discovers that the note is missing. He lays down on the bed, smiles and smells of Alice’s garment. In the morning, Ralph and Madeleine hang out. Adam leaves the school and runs into Jaya, who turns out to be his mother.
Indian Summers Review
Again, Indian Summers grows better and better with each episode. This one was full of intense moments and revelations. Although there are a lot of characters, the show is very easy to follow and each character is equally interesting. Aafrin and Alice seem to be on a romantic collision course and will hopefully work together to bring down Ralph.
Overall, the episode was great and deserves an 8.5 out of 10. Be sure to click here to follow up with the previous episodes of Indian Summers.
