As the 6th episode begins, a woman checks on her dog, Winston, and finds a dead man in the nearby swimming pool. After the intro, we see the digital recreation of Max’s fall. Bryan Nichols (Damien Garvey) tells his team that Dr. Bramson believes Max had a physical altercation with another person just moments before he fell to his death. He admits that Dr. Lyle Fairley (Darren Gilshenan) might’ve got it wrong when he said it was a misadventure. He tells his bosses he wants the case reopened as a homicide investigation but is told that the evidence is thin. He goes on to say that they found prints on Max’s vehicle and those prints belong to an unknown individual. Those prints match the ones found on the phone in the glove box as well as the note written to Daniel Harrow (Ioan Gruffudd).
Bryan is convinced that Daniel’s son is alive and somehow involved in Max Zoric’s death. He wants to tap Daniel’s phone so he can see if he contacts his son. Daniel goes searching for Fern (Ella Newton) but she isn’t home and she isn’t answering her phone. As he leaves, the package carrier asks him about Fern and when she could return. He doesn’t have any answers for her. Her partner watches from across the street. Lyle talks to Grace (Jolene Anderson) about his new hobby and hanging out with Ben. Daniel joins them and learns about Lyle taking up yoga, meditation, and Zen relaxing tea. Lyle admits it was hard to deal with Bramson scrutinizing his work. As a result, he is creating a new Lyle and he intends to put his stress and anxiety behind him.
The body of Myles Finney arrives at the morgue seconds later and Bryan explains he was a 19-year-old resident of Wickham Apartments. He was found after dawn in the complex’s swimming pool by one of his neighbors. Myles was liked and often helped with odd jobs around the apartment complex to help pay for rent and to top up his disability allowance. Myles had been diagnosed with moderate intellectual and physical disabilities but he could swim like a fish. When Daniel asks about the next of kin, he learns that Myles was a foster and was in and out of different homes all his life. While they prepare for the autopsy, Grace ignores Ben’s calls. Daniel asks her about that so she says she thinks Ben moves back to Brisbane to try to get back together with her. She couldn’t sign the divorce papers because they didn’t have a witness.
She says she doesn’t want to stay married to him though. Edwina (Faustina Agolley) interrupts to let them know that Myles is ready to go. Grace checks the boy’s wallet and finds a bus pass and some coins, but no ID or bank cards. He also had a bag of sweets in the front pocket of his jeans and amethyst, obsidian, and rose quartz rocks. Daniel admits he used to have a rock collection when he was a child. Then, their conversation turns to Myles’s disability which meant he had a mental age of 11. They find a possible pressure contusion from a thumb or the pool ladder from a fall on his arm. Daniel admits it could be either of those, but it might’ve happened hours before he died too. He says there is no way to be sure before finding that the boy’s eyes are bloodshot and there is some swelling on his eyelids. They check with the Endocam and find chemical burns.
Daniel says it certainly wasn’t from the pool water so they open him up for a closer look. Then, he says his respiratory tract is badly ulcerated and the burns continue into his lungs and bronchial tract. Daniel concluded that he asphyxiated but not in water. He wonders if Myles inhaled some type of corrosive gas right before he died. Grace suggests it might’ve been pool chemicals. They try to confirm it. Daniel says chlorine gas reacts to the moisture in a person’s eyes, mouth, and lungs and forms hydrochloric acid. They use a Litmus strip and confirm that it is acid. Due to the severity of the burns, Daniel believes the gas must’ve been extremely concentrated. He wonders how it happened. Next, Bryan and Daniel go to the pool and talk to the man in charge. They learn that Myles took care of the pool and mixed the chemicals.
The man explains that Myles was a hard worker and didn’t make mistakes once someone showed him how to do something. He also admits he is going to miss him while Daniel confirms that the PH levels are fine. The man, Terry Penn (Travis McMahon), agrees to show them the shed. Once the doors are opened, Daniel finds a lot of chemicals inside, but no signs of a spill or accident. Daniel doesn’t understand why Myles would suddenly make a mistake after six months and Terry says he never made a mistake. Then, they’re allowed to look through the boy’s flat. Daniel finds some cleaning chemicals but nothing to make chlorine gas. We learn that Myles had a collection of rocks and reviewed them on his YouTube channel which only had 12 followers and most from the apartment complex.
Daniel doesn’t understand how Myles died from chlorine gas but ended up in the pool. Bryan wonders if he was trying to wash his face with the water and fell in. Daniel says he died before he fell in and someone put him in the water. They talk to another resident who says Myles asked how she could get his cards back. He wanted to get his bank cards back from the manager Terry. Myles was forced to give Terry his bank cards and PIN numbers when he moved in. Terry promised he’d take the rent out and make sure Myles got paid for the odd jobs. She claims Terry took his disability allowance and she encourages Myles to go to the police but he went to Terry instead. Myles threatened to go to the police if Terry didn’t get his cards back and she says you can imagine how that went over.
They’re surprised that this happened yesterday afternoon out by the pool. They try to talk to Terry once again but he escapes in his vehicle. A police cruiser goes after him. Daniel and Bryan are convinced they’ve found their man. When Daniel returns to his boat, he is approached by two men in suits before being taken to Mila Zoric (Diana Glenn). He jokes about the disgruntled workers coming for her before she gives him a drink. When Mila mentions Daniel’s son, he asks what she wants from him. She thinks Daniel knows something about Max’s death and she says they both know that James was in the shipyard when he died. Daniel denies knowing anything before Mila says James isn’t the person Daniel thinks he is. She reveals that James stole $22 million from her company. She goes on to say she paid for all of this by understanding that everyone wants something and you can use that to get them to pay.
She admits she thought she could stop Max’s extravagant behavior if he worked with her. He is dead and she failed to understand her son. She looked into Daniel and believes he is like her. She claims he wants to reconnect with a lost boy. Daniel says he would never put his child in danger and she says she doesn’t want to hurt James. She only wants to know what happened and why. She claims they can move on past the stolen money. Daniel tries to call Fern again but she doesn’t answer. He leaves a message encouraging her to tell James to call him. Matthias argues that Daniel will never give up his son, but Mila believes he might to protect his daughter. Fern and Callan (Hunter Page-Lochard) move boxes while ignoring another call from Daniel. Callan wants to answer his phone but Fern says he can’t because Daniel will lead the two people to them and James.
Callan wonders what James has done and whether it’ll put Fern in danger too. Fern thinks they’ll be okay as long as nobody knows where they are. Callan is still concerned about trusting James so Fern says he only needs to trust her. James (Harrison Gilberton) enters with champagne so they can celebrate the move. Callan doesn’t understand how he can afford it at $200 a bottle. Fern is happy though. Then, James says he applied for a new credit card but forgot to give them the new address. It has been dropped off at Fern’s mom’s house so he’ll need to go there and get it. Fern offers to go since nobody is looking for her. When they step out of the room, James checks Fern’s phone and looks through the contacts list. When Fern goes for the mail, Bryan confronts her and says the text message said 9.
She seems confused says she wanted to ask him about something. She has been thinking about what Daniel said to him on the Bettie. James watches from a hiding place as Fern asks Bryan about having a half-brother. She goes on to tell him the rest of the things Daniel told her while James uses his phone to break into Bryan’s vehicle. Fern keeps Bryan busy while James works to steal files from Bryan’s computer. Nichols asks Fern to call him if she hears from James so she asks what he has done. Bryan won’t tell her though. James is gone by the time Bryan returns to his car. When James returns home, Fern asks why he would use her phone to text Bryan Nichols. James admits he needed to make sure Bryan wasn’t at his office so he could go there and try to get his phone back. He confesses it didn’t work and Fern is upset that James used her again. Callan hears them arguing and makes sure everything is fine. Cal is worried about Fern because she is cutting James too much slack.
Daniel runs into Lyle at the office and finds he is still drinking the smelly tea and conducting a yoga session every morning at sunrise. Daniel turns down his offer to join them before getting a call from Bryan Nichols. Harrow meets with Nichols who tells him about his conversation with Fern who asked about her brother. Then, Daniel learns about schoolteacher Leonard Thompson who has been dead for 24 to 36 hours. The history teacher was recently suspended from the local high school after a physical altercation with a male student. Although they haven’t confirmed the allegation, they found a resignation letter. Leonard’s body is found near the door and Daniel finds he has symptoms similar to Myles. Bryan shows Daniel an artillery shell which Bryan says is a World War I gas shell. Leonard bought it illegally as well as a bunch of other items. Daniel says the green cross on the shell means it contained a pulmonary agent.
He says diphosgene and Bryan says chlorine. They believe Leonard dropped the shell causing it to crack. The gas leaked out and turned into chlorine gas. Daniel returns to the office and compares the lung tissues from Leonard and Myles. The damage is almost identical so they both inhaled chlorine gas in the same suburb. Grace wonders if Myles attended school and met Leonard there, but Daniel soon learns that he didn’t attend the same school. Daniel talks to a colleague of Leonard who knew him for 30 years. She is concerned that Leonard did this to himself due to recent circumstances. She says the boy who made the complaint has always been difficult and was expelled from another school for his violent behavior. His mother thought he could do no wrong. Then, Daniel tries to get the boy’s name and address. Daniel visits Alex Bryant and talks to the boy’s brother and mother.
Amanda (Sara Cooper) and Alex Bryant (Wilson Moore) have no sympathy for Leonard Thompson. He also learns that Alex knew Myles who he refers to as mental. Alex denies having anything to do with Myles’s death while saying he went to kickboxing and stayed there until he spent the night at his girlfriend’s place. Daniel returns to the office and watches Myles’s YouTube videos. He checks on the body before Lyle joins him. Lyle offers Daniel some of the tea he is now eating and refers to them as forest lollies. That triggers something for Daniel. He checks the picture of Myles’s candy on his computer before going to Brenda’s Market where they’re selling the same candy. He talks to the clerk and learns that Myles was there two days ago, bought a bag of lollies, and left. They look through the CCTV footage together and watch Myles check out at the register.
His friend Cooper Bryant (Finn Little) stops him outside so Daniel returns to the Bryant house and looks for Cooper. He finds the boy sitting under a tree and confirms Myles was his only friend and they went to the teacher’s house together. Cooper says they wanted to get back at Thompson by trashing his house. When they broke in, they got distracted by his weapon collect and Myles picked up the shell before Thompson walked in and caught them. Myles freaked out and dropped the bomb. He picked it up and the gas spewed everywhere. Thompson tried to save Myles’s life. Cooper helped Myles run to the pool. He stopped breathing and Cooper didn’t know what to do. He pushed Myles into the pool. He admits he made Myles goes to Thompson’s place. Daniel encourages him to tell the police but Cooper says he doesn’t want to go to jail.
The boy pulls a grenade out of his backpack and the pin has been pulled. Cooper blames himself but Daniel tries to convince him otherwise. He relents and gives Daniel the grenade before hiding behind the tree. Daniel tosses the grenade and covers Cooper until it explodes. After that, Daniel meets with Bryan who says they’ve found Terry hiding in a caravan park. He is being charged with embezzlement. As for Cooper, he will likely be charged with B&E and interfering with a corpse. Bryan hopes the child’s court will go easy on him. Daniel learns that Edwina combed Myles’s hair even though he is being cremated by the state. Daniel returns his rocks to his pocket before the body is taken away. Ben tracks down Grace and she wants to ask about his move to Brisbane but he is eager to get the papers signed.
A solicitor, Sage, has joined him and she soon finds out that Sage is Ben’s fiancee. Seconds later, Lyle gives Daniel some of the tea he has been drinking. Daniel reads the ingredients and tells Lyle he has been taking a very potent psychedelic. Lyle can’t believe he has been eating magic mushrooms and importing Class A drugs into the country. He gets upset when he remembers who he has given some of it to. Renae (Miriama Smith) enters and finds a box from Lyle on her desk. Daniel tracks down Callan and says he needs to speak to James who comes down the stairs. They argue about Daniel not helping his son before Daniel says he spoke to Mila. James is asked about the $22 million he stole from Mila but he claims Mila is playing Daniel. He says she is lying because she is a criminal just like her son.
He claims Max stole the money and that is why he needed the fake passport. Then, Daniel tells his son about the new autopsy and how it says Max got into a fight before his fall. They argue about the phone and James putting Fern in danger. James says he told Fern everything and she still wants to help him. Moments later, James goes out and uses his computer to check the camera feed. It is a video feed of Bryan in his office. His computer messes up until a colleague enters and tells him about a call being intercepted from Daniel’s phone. It is the call telling Fern he needs to speak to her brother.
Harrow Review
This season of Harrow has been pretty good from start to finish. The side investigations have been just as entertaining as ever and this one was excellent. The investigation into the death of Myles Finney had a lot of twists and turns. I couldn’t have guessed what was going to happen from one minute to the next.
Still, I think it is time to start focusing on Daniel and his son. We’re quickly running out of episodes so I think they need to delve deeper into James and Max’s death. The episode made Daniel question his son since Mila claims he stole $22 million but James denies it.
Callan is becoming suspicious of James as well because he keeps putting Fern in danger, but she doesn’t seem to care. There is still a lot left to happen and I wish the show would start focusing solely on James’s story. The episode scores an 8 out of 10. Past and future recaps of Harrow can be found on Reel Mockery here.
