At the beginning of the episode, Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) baptizes a baby. He receives a note from his mother at home too. His training with Vic Morgan (Ross Boatman) continues. Once the training session ends, Will tells Vic he believes his mother has disowned him. Vic tells Will he has his own life to live and he should live it. Next, Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and Larry Peters (Bradley Hall) visit the Beaumont Theater where they’re showing The Lady Killers. They head inside and speak with Betsey Granger (Zoe Tapper) and Wyatt Rogers (Mark Umbers). Betsey explains that an Indian fellow broke into the theater somehow.
They begin looking for the man immediately. Geordie and Wyatt go to the theater’s control room where they find evidence someone has been sleeping there. The theater uses a change over system. Larry arrives and explains that the door downstairs is knackered. Wyatt knew about it but he hasn’t told office about it yet. He also explains that he missed the Hollywood sunshine. Their search continues while Wyatt tells the investigators that he is a screenwriter. He is on the blacklist thanks to Senator McCarthy’s witch hunt. Larry seems thrilled to learn more about Wyatt and his celebrity friends but Betsey is tired of hearing it.
Another worker arrives and informs them that the guests have arrived. Jack (Nick Brimble) and Sylvia (Tessa Peake-Jones) prepare to go out. As they get into the vehicle, an Indian stranger stare at them from a distance. That night, Will goes to the movies with Ellie Harding (Lauren Carse). They share a joke before Vic and Marie (Sandra Huggett) join them. Matthew (Jim Caesar) arrives with his friends and he is a bit rude with Will. During the movie, Will sits with Ellie while Matthew causes a scene with his friends. Betsey interrupts and offers Will something. She encourages him to take a pack of cigarettes but Ellie tells her that he has all of the temptation he needs. Meanwhile, a brick is thrown through the window at the Chapman house.
The movie stops cause something has gone wrong upstairs. Matthew tries to cause trouble between Will and Ellie. A scream shuts the boy up. Will and Ellie rush to the control room to find that Wyatt has been bashed in the head. When Larry arrives at the scene, he is surprised to see Ellie there. He seems a bit disheartened that she is at the movies with Will. Geordie appears worried about their relationship. After that, Geordie speaks with Parker who works at the theater and Betsey. While Betsey didn’t see anyone, Parker believes he saw that Indian fellow. Larry is told to get on the radio and circulate a description while Geordie and Will return to the crime scene.
Geordie realizes that Wyatt was still alive when he changed the second reel. He suspects Wyatt was killed around 10 past 8. He checks Wyatt’s wallet and finds money inside allowing him to rule out robbery. He finds an army medal in the victim’s pocket. Back at home, Leonard (Al Weaver) tells Will about the brick throwing incident. Sylvia doesn’t want to report it but Will and Leonard believe she should. At the Keating home, Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth) offers to bring home fish and chips but Diana (Paula Wilcox) has other ideas. Diana wants to take the kids to the beach but Cathy thinks they should go to school. Nevertheless, she relents and lets them go.
Will arrives at the station just in time to find out that the suspect Tariq Hassan (Hamza Jeetooa) has been arrested. Larry gets a bit angry with Will. Geordie tells Will that Larry is gunning for him. They agree that Hassan likely broke the window. They interrogate Hassan seconds later. He refuses to speak until he is shown his father’s medal. He believes he dropped the medal since he doesn’t know how it ended up in the victim’s pocket. He is asked about the window before being told he can get the death penalty for murder. Hassan doesn’t believe they want the truth. Outside, Will tells Geordie that he isn’t sure Hassan would kill over a medal. He is asked about his mother’s relationship and he says it is her life.
Moments later, they check Wyatt’s room and find a typewriter badly damaged. In the trashcan, Will finds a bottle of alcohol and there are lipstick marks on a glass nearby. Geordie finds a suitcase with pictures of girls including a headshot of Betsey. They confront her seconds later. She lied earlier and admits they were in the early days of their relationship. She says the pictures are headshots and he agrees to put her up for a screen test. She gives them a letter from The Remington Partnership about the headshot. Geordie catches Matthew stealing from the theater. Will chases him down and asks him why. Matthew gives the peace sign and continues in the opposite direction. They meet up with Matthew at the gym and tell Vic what has happened.
Geordie arrests him without hesitation. Will wants to know why Matthew is trying to throw everything away. Vic suggests Matthew was stealing to get money for the gym but Geordie doesn’t believe it. Vic tells Will that the gym is in pretty bad shape. Will counts money before giving it to Geordie and saying it was in Matthew’s locker. Will wants the charges dropped but Geordie isn’t eager to do that. Sylvia and Jack arrive for the lineup. Jack gives her support. Sylvia looks at the men in front of her and eventually points out Tariq Hassan. Sylvia is surprised when Jack wants to drop the charges against Hassan. Cathy returns home to find the house empty.
Will doesn’t believe Tariq is responsible for Wyatt’s murder. Larry interrupts and says he got in touch with Wyatt’s sister. They learn that Wyatt isn’t American. Wyatt is holding a stuffed teddy bear in the picture and it is the same one found in his room. This convinces Will that Wyatt wasn’t a conman but was fantasizing. They agree to speak with Betsey again in the morning but Geordie isn’t going to let Matthew out of jail just yet. Will speaks with Matthew in the cell and tells him about being arrested by Geordie once too. Will admits he expected too much of Matthew since nobody can change overnight. Matthew says he did expect too much of him and he doesn’t want to speak with Geordie.
Diana arrives home with the kids and Cathy isn’t happy about it. Esme (Skye Lucia Degruttola) says it was embarrassing and everyone was staring at them. Diana intends to hit her but Cathy steps in and stops it. When Geordie arrives home, the chaos ends. Hassan is released only to find Sylvia there. She offers him something to eat. Geordie and Will ask Betsey if Wyatt wanted money for the headshots. She says they don’t have any money. She also explains that Parker doesn’t get paid. He is only allowed to watch the movies for free. She says he gave him the medal he found too. Meanwhile, Sylvia wants to know why Hassan threw the brick through their window.
He explains that he knew Jack in India. When the country was split, Jack helped transport some of the citizens across the border. His mother gave Jack a ring so he would wait for her husband to arrive. The rumor says Hassan’s dad died before he could get to the truck. Sylvia gives Hassan the ring which is the one Hassan’s mother gave Jack. Sylvia learns and confronts Jack about the ring which he lied about. He says India was a different time and set of rules. As for Tariq’s father, he didn’t make it. He suggests he was giving the woman hope instead of telling her the truth. Sylvia storms out seconds later. Parker is interviewed by Geordie and Will. Parker denies doing anything except for putting the medal in Wyatt’s pocket.
He also lied about seeing Tariq in the theater that night. Once the interview ends, Geordie complains about Wyatt, Betsey, and Parker. He doesn’t like the way they live their lives. Will checks the letter and reads the name Marcus Remington. Ellie interviews Betsey and takes pictures of her. Betsey calls Ellie so she can tell the world what a good man Wyatt was. She is confronted about the fake letter and Wyatt not being a screenwriter. She claims she loved him but Will and Geordie believe she only loved the fame. She found out about the fake letter and smashed the typewriter with a baseball bat. She confronts Wyatt and he didn’t smooth things over. She smashed him in the head with the ashtray.
She is arrested seconds later. When she is led away, Will asks Ellie if she’ll be in the newspaper. Next, Matthew is finally released. Geordie tells him that Matthew seems intent on saving his soul. Will says that Geordie helped as well but Geordie doesn’t want any credit. Geordie tells Larry good work and he has earned himself a pint. Will goes out with Ellie that night. They share a drink before Will tells Ellie everything about Wyatt. They dance before heading to the alley for something more. They eventually stop and Will rushes off. He speaks at the church while Betsey’s mugshot is taken at the jail.
Grantchester Review
I thought this episode of Grantchester was pretty good. It might not have been as good as the previous but it came very close. I am not a big fan of Matthew. He is going to be difficult to stomach if he doesn’t shape up pretty soon. How many chances can Will and Geordie give him? I knew something was a bit off about Jack and this episode proved it. That caused tension between him and Sylvia but I am not sure how far that will go.
I am worried that Will said too much during his date with Ellie. Will she end up using his words in her next newspaper article? It seems that the relationship between Cathy and Diana is going to blow up at some point. They won’t be able to hide their animosity from Geordie forever. The episode was pretty good. It scores a 7.5 out of 10. Previous recaps of Grantchester can be found on Reel Mockery.
