Grace Series 4 Episode 3 Recap

Glenn Branson Grace ITV

You Are Dead – The episode opens with Jamie Brown (Sam Retford) eating while Logan Somerville (Freya Parks) prepares for work. He asks if she has reconsidered. She says they will discuss it tonight when a text alert pops up on her phone. He asks who it is from but she refuses to answer. Frustrated, he grabs his jacket before leaving. She retrieves a few things, including an inhaler, from her bedroom and turns to leave. Blood can be seen on a throw rug on the floor.  At Hove Lagoon, a construction worker (Danny Parsons) busting up a concrete slab discovers a human skull. He alerts his boss. A short time later, Logan is startled by a loud noise while walking through Winchester Gate parking garage. She hurries to her car and calls Jamie. In a voicemail, she demands he stop trying to scare her. Someone opens her car door and threatens her with what appears to be a knife.

At Hove Lagoon crime scene, DI Glenn Branson (Richie Campbell) informs DSI Roy Grace (John Simm) of the human remains concealed under concrete for about 25 years. Nadiuska De Sancha (Carolina Valdes) suggests the victim is a male. Cleo Morey (Zoe Tapper) rules out strangulation as the cause of death. Siobhan Sheldrake (Jan Le) arrives at the scene. Branson and Grace refuse to talk in-depth about the case. Grace receives a call from DC Nick Nicholl (Brad Morrison) saying Jamie reportedly received a distressed message from Logan who never arrived at her workplace. Winchester Gate parking garage does not have CCTV cameras. Grace appoints Branson as head of the crime scene while he focuses on Logan’s abduction.

Mole gives Harrison and Felix a file with photos of Logan. Harrison proposes a toast to “old friends and new ventures.” At Winchester Gate parking garage, Bella tells Nick and Grace about a Volvo, not belonging to the residents, speeding through the exit. Nick says Jamie missed work without notifying his boss. A short time later, Jamie voices concern about Logan and plays her voicemail for Grace. When asked questions about his relationship with Logan, he gets hostile and insists the police focus on finding her.

Goldstone Caravan Park – Felix stops to give Adrienne Macklin (Jess Robinson) a wad of cash before unlocking a heavily secured caravan. Elsewhere, Psychiatrist Jacob Van Dam (Angus Wright) receives a call from an anesthetist, Harrison. Van Dam says his general practitioner claims he doesn’t always think logically or rationally. Harrison admits to feeling unappreciated by his patients and describes the thought of killing them as “intoxicating.” He claims to have already killed several of his patients and says Van Dam’s niece, Logan’s name before ending the call. Van Dam accesses Logan’s social media to see Jamie’s plea for information about her whereabouts.

Logan wakes to find herself restrained inside a metal box. She frantically screams. Another victim, Evan Johnson (Joe Bolland) tells her that it is useless because no one can hear them. She screams in terror. Elsewhere, Grace informs Cleo that Sandy has been presumed dead by the court. He says Sandy is gone and his life is with her. She reminds him of their unborn baby. He tells her that he will not miss her next doctor’s appointment for the world.

Emma Brice (Kitty Castledine) claims to have urged Logan to move past a very jealous and controlling Jamie. She says when he found out what she said, he very nearly threatened her. DS Norman Potting (Craig Parkinson) asks what her email – How did he take it – was referring to. Emma says Logan broke their engagement several days ago. At an unknown location, Logan is permitted to utilize her inhaler. She asks her abductor wearing a mask if it was Jamie’s idea. Ignoring her pleas, the man closes the lid. At the police station, Grace asks if there is any update on the Hove Lagoon case. Nick tells him that the Volvo speeding out of Winchester Gate parking garage is 10 years old but the owner has not been identified. Forensics is looking into blood found in Jamie and Logan’s flat.

At an undisclosed location, Evan tells Logan that his abductor has been feeding him three times a day but never let him out of the box. Elsewhere, Bella asks Jamie about the blood in his flat. He attributes it to Logan’s stubbed toe. Grace asks where he went on the morning of Logan’s abduction. Jamie sticks to his story about going for a drive to think. At the morgue, Nadiuska tells Grace and Branson that the Hove Lagoon victim had blonde hair and was in his 20s at the time of his death. Cleo suggests the victim was killed somewhere else and deposited at the site before the concrete was laid. Nadiuska shows them a brand, “U R Dead,” on the victim’s arm.

Logan’s abductor brands “U R” on her arm. She screams in pain. Evan assures her that the pain will ease. He has the same brand on his arm. Elsewhere, Harrison claims the Hove Lagoon is their victim. Felix says when they chose the path, no one knew it would be excavated. Mole demands their future victims be buried. Felix informs Mole of Harrison’s call to Van Dam. Mole warns him against defying him in the future. Felix voices concern about the police connecting the brand to their other victims. Mole refuses to put their project on hold. A short time later, Harrison calls Van Dam to tell him Logan will decide her fate.

Klinikum Central Munchen – Marcel asks an ICU nurse (Oliver Akwe) for an update on Sandy’s (Clare Calbrath) condition. The nurse says she has spoken but only incoherent words. Elsewhere, Branson tells Grace that Catherine Mary Westerham of East Sussex disappeared in December 1994, and her remains were discovered in Old Mill Forest in April 1995. “U R Dead” was branded on her forearm. Looking at Catherine’s photo, Grace suggests she has a resemblance to Logan. At the police station, Van Dam tells Grace about Harrison’s call and the brand. He says the GP surgery referral is a fake. The phone number that he called from has since been disconnected. He suggests Harrison was enjoying himself. Grace explains his theory of how the abductors choose their victims by hair color and gender. Branson researches the missing persons database to find Evan who was reported missing five days ago.

ACC Cassian Pewe (Sam Hoare) warns Branson and Grace that there are risks involved in announcing a serial killer(s) work in the city. Weighing their odds, they decide to release a public statement. Marcel calls Grace to tell him about the unidentified ICU patient with a British accent. At an undisclosed location, Evan loses it and threatens to kill Mole. Leaving the lid open, Mole heats up the branding tool. In a flashback, young Mole (Ilan Galkoff) gives young Lisa White (Madeleine Jabir) a bouquet of flowers. Young Rex (Leo Patrick) accuses him of hitting on his girlfriend before shoving him. Back to the present, Mole brands “DEAD” on Evan’s arm, closes the lid, and turns on the water tap. Evan slowly drowns. Opening Logan’s box, Mole says they don’t deserve her, and gives her the inhaler. She thanks him.

The Hove Lagoon remains is that of Dennis Paterson who was reported missing in 1994. Grace informs his team that Jamie has been ruled out as the suspect in Logan’s disappearance. The killer has been inactive since the 90s until just recently. Elsewhere, Adrian Stanford is mowed down by a Black Mercedes. The driver injects Adrian with medicine and puts him in the boot of his vehicle. At the police station, Grace tells Van Dam that there is no connection between Logan and Evan’s disappearances. Van Dam says Harrison said, “We’ll see if she’s worthy.” A Brown Volvo, registered to Martin Homer of Portslade, was seen leaving Winchester Gate parking garage after Logan’s abduction. A short time later, Grace’s team raids Martin’s home to learn from Maggie Horner (Janie Booth) that he is deceased. He tells her that a Volvo was registered in Martin’s name. They receive an alert about Adrian’s abduction.

Mole takes Adrian to his hideout only to discover his hair is the wrong color. Irate, he beats him. Later, Harrison criticizes Mole for being careless. Mole reminds him of his call to Van Dam. Elsewhere, Siobhan tells Branson about her failed relationship. He tells her that the case is big. At the police station, Norman says Adrian was being pursued by a black Mercedes. It was registered to Mike Tuckwell who was confirmed to have been in Lewes when Adrian was abducted. A short time later, Siobhan shows Grace and Branson a viral video of a man pointing the finger at Jamie. She warns of a “full-blown vigilantism if the public solves it before the police. At an undisclosed location, Logan tries to manipulate Mole into releasing her. He boasts of protecting her from Jamie. He gets upset with her and slams the lid shut. She apologizes.

Cassian and Roy hold a press conference. James watches from home. Roy speaks to a journalist about a possible serial killer. He claims someone is targeting young men and women of a specific appearance. Roy alleges the killer made several mistakes. Mole (Keir Charles) gets upset and calls that claim BS. Roy tells the journalists that the victims were branded. Siobhan asks if they have any suspects. Roy mentions the name Harrison Hunter (Jason Thorpe). Cassian says they don’t want to create panic and they’re confident of an imminent arrest. The journalists don’t believe him. Harrison and Mole argue about taking credit and taking risks. Harrison calls Felix Gore Parker (Robert Wilfort) quite the little influencer.

Felix says he was online accusing Logan’s boyfriend to take the attention off of them. Mole warns them what he’s capable of. Protestors call for justice outside the police station. Roy shows everyone what they received from The Argus. The message says, “I don’t make mistakes, but I do teach lessons. Go to the Monumental Indian for a takeaway treat.” Roy thinks it’ll be somewhere significant to attract attention. Bella Moy (Laura Elphinstone), Roy, and Glenn go to The Chattri where they find two men tied to fence posts. One of the dead men has a note on his shirt asking, “Who’s next Roy?” Roy worries that Logan may not have long left. He goes on to say this isn’t like the past victims. Roy worries that he provoked the killer although Glenn insists this isn’t his fault.

Cassian blames Roy’s strategy and says police tactics will be blamed for these deaths. He reveals Roy’s hashtag “#BrightonBrander” is trending. They argue about the impact. Roy reminds Cassian that he told everyone an arrest was imminent. At the morgue, Nadiuska De Sancha tells Roy about Adrian’s injuries. The victim was likely strangled and his hair had been dyed recently. Evan Johnson’s cause of death is much different. It appears he was drowned. He also has ligature marks on his wrists and ankles. Cleo believes he was held prisoner before his murder. Both victims were branded on the left forearm. Evan’s branding is less uniform. It suggests the branding was done in two stages. It says, “UR DEAD”. Cleo says the men were dead well before they were dropped off at the Temple. They were killed before Roy spoke to the press.

Roy gets a call before telling Glenn he’ll see him back at the station. Marcel Kullen (Ernest Gromov) says he received the photo he asked for from the hospital. He sends it to Roy who claims he can’t tell whether it’s Sandy. Roy thinks it’s time he should move on. Marcel suggests sending something with Sandy’s DNA on it. Roy says he’ll have a look although he doubts it. At the station, Glenn says traffic camera images show Adrian wearing a helmet before he was taken. Roy suggests the killer would’ve been enraged by the fact that Adrian’s hair color was different. Nick says there have been no potential suspects in the last 30 years from the FBI. Bella talks about possible trigger moments for serial killers when they’re younger.

Roy wonders if the killer is recreating a moment from their childhood. Roy says they should look for incidents dating back to the 1980s involving people with blonde hair or brown hair and water. Another victim is stalked. Glenn tells Roy about two school pupils named Lisa White and Rex Spencer. They drowned at Havendean Beach in 1983. Their friend, Edward Denning, tried to save them but the current was too strong. Roy finds out that DI Henry Gilbert of Hove Police said it looked like misguided high jinks that had gone gravely wrong. Bella found a Harrison Hunter who went to a school called Lark House in Sussex. One of Hunter’s classmates was named Edward Denning. Hunter seemed to vanish several years after leaving school. Bella is asked to track down anyone from the school who may know them. He also wants to speak to DI Gilbert.

The next possible victim, Fred Northshaw (Thomas Flynn), is shown in his bedroom. Someone in a mask is watching him. Mole attacks him. Fred manages to fight back and escape with his dog’s help. He flags down cars for help. Glenn and Roy speak to Henry Gilbert (Alan Leith) who says Denning was trouble. That was no surprise giving his cold-fish parents. Henry says Denning’s story never felt right. Denning said he was Rex and thought he was playing a prank. Then, Lisa jumped in to try to save Rex. Denning claimed he tried desperately to save them but couldn’t. Henry didn’t believe him. He calls Harrison Hunter arrogant. Henry believes Harrison knew something. He mentions Harrison’s little puppet Felix.

Denning likely scared them into silence. Outside, Roy discusses the idea that the three men are working together. Glenn gets a call from Bella who says they tried to take another victim. Fred’s residence is searched for evidence. At the residence, they speak about Fred who moved there to open a restaurant. Roy opens a letter and realizes it’s from the same doctor’s surgery as the letter Van Dam received about Harrison Hunter. This time, the doctor is named Edward Crisp. Glenn looks him up and recognizes him. He mentions the video that Siobhan showed them of the Brighton Community Watch campaign. They see Edward Crisp with a sign. Roy questions whether Edward Crisp is Edward Denning. Nick is told to learn more about Denning. Roy wants to visit Dr. Crisp.

Roy and Norman ask Crisp why Harrison Hunter produced a fake referral letter. Roy notices wounds on Crisp’s arm. He questions Crisp about Dr. Van Dam. Crisp says he’s aware of him although he’s never met him. They briefly talk about Crisp’s family. Norman says he’s recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and he’s getting conflicted messages regarding treatment. Crisp offers to refer him to specialists. He jots down the details for Norman. As they leave, Roy tells Norman to send it to the lab to get it matched against the profile from Fred’s house. Roy asks if he noticed the bite mark on Crisp’s wrist. Norman didn’t mean for Roy to find out like that. He just wants to get on with it and keep working. Nick calls Roy to say Edward Denning changed his named to Edward Crisp.

He’s been a local GP for about 30 years. His patient roster shows no links to Logan, Evan, or Adrian. Fred Northshaw is registered with him though. Martin and Maggie Horner are as well. Roy tells Norman they need a match on the DNA fast. Roy tells Nick to get him a team down there because they need to get back into Crisp’s house with a warrant. Logan makes noise and yells for food. She isn’t feeling so well. Once the team gathers outside, Roy tells them they’re waiting for DNA confirmation from Fred’s house. Norman calls and confirms it’s a match. They storm the residence. Roy finds divorce papers that came in just before Evan Johnson went missing. Glenn suggests Edward started offending again once his marriage was over. Nick interrupts to say the place looks empty, but they found ropes and harnesses in the garage.

They also found a Mercedes with multiple cloned plates. Roy wants to find out where Edward got to. Glenn finds a lease agreement for the Goldstone Caravan Park with Harrison Hunter on it. Roy and Glenn go to the caravan park. Bella calls to say they found shoeboxes full of photos at Crisp’s house. Some have been taken locally on the coast. The images feature three lads. Bella believes it’s Crisp, Harrison Hunter, and Felix Gore Parker. Inside the caravan, Roy and Glenn find newspaper clippers and other information about the Brighton Brander and their victims. Roy thinks Crisp would need somewhere isolated to keep his victims. They learn that the boys in the photo are standing in front of an old fort along this stretch of the coat. Tunnels were added to the fort in the Victorian era. Felix and Harrison tell Edward this is like Lisa white all over again.

They tell him there is only one way to handle things now. In a flashback, Edward is shown holding Lisa’s head underwater. Edward checks on Logan and checks for a pulse. She wakes up holding his hand and says he saved her. Edward walks away as she tries to free herself. He begins heating up the branding iron. Edward returns and tries to brand Logan who turns the tables on him. Then, she flees and sees Roy and Glenn in the distance. Logan wants to show them where he is. When they go back, Edward is already gone. Glenn calls for backup. Roy looks around until he finds Edward sitting with two skeletons. Edward introduces him to Harrison and Felix. He says Van Dam deserved it. He confronted Van Dam at a conference only to be snubbed.

Edward begins arguing with Harrison and Felix. He says he was rejected, but he never means to hurt his projects. They all failed him. Roy argues he set them up to fail. He says no woman can ever fill the hole that Lisa left. Edward thinks those men needed to be taught a lesson. When Glenn yells for Roy, Edward uses the distraction to attack Roy. A piece of wood falls and traps Edward under it. Roy and Glenn watch as he’s covered in debris. Later, Roy is shown recovering at home. Marcel calls Roy to say they found an item near the woman who was hit. Roy looks at the bracelet. He can’t answer Marcel because Cleo and Glenn interrupt. Glenn says they have to declare the tunnels secure before they can start digging. In private, Roy tells Glenn that Marcel has found Sandy in a Munich ICU. He says she had the bracelet that went missing from his house.

Roy hasn’t told Cleo because he’s scared of losing everything. Glenn thinks now is the chance to show Cleo that Sandy doesn’t matter. It won’t backfire unless Roy stands over Sandy’s bedside and realizes he’s with the wrong person. Roy insists that’s not going to happen. Later, Roy talks to Cleo about it. She admits she always feared this was a possibility. Roy says this doesn’t change anything although he can finally get answers and have closure. Roy thinks they should go and see Sandy together. Roy speaks to Logan who won’t be happy until she sees Edward’s body. Logan convinced Jamie it was time for him to let her go. Next, Roy and the others talk about Crisp and his mental disorder. Hunter calls to say he hopes Roy enjoyed the company of his friends. He hopes Roy won’t make the fatal mistake of coming after him again.

He agrees to give Norman advice about his prostate cancer. After the call, Norman has to tell Bella and the others about it. Roy and Cleo go to Munich.

Grace Review

The fourth series of Grace has been fairly watchable and logical through two episodes, but the third was easily the most illogical episode possibly ever. The story really went overboard in every aspect possible, including blaming Roy for deaths, the discovery of Sandy, and the whole Edward Crisp situation. Since this drug on for an entire hour and a half, it just found a way to get messier and messier until it reached its messy peak in the last few minutes.

The story that was created for Edward and his friends was trying way too hard but it really didn’t work because it was so corny. The twist at the end certainly didn’t help matters. Then, you had Roy and Cleo just leaving out of the blue instead of trying to get to the bottom of it. Certain aspects of the episode were too predictable, especially Logan’s fate and the fact that Fred would be a surviving victim. Fred really didn’t matter though because he was shown for a minute or two before disappearing.

They also never explained how Mole, Edward, or Crisp managed to get out of the house despite Roy and Glenn being outside the entire time. Norman’s prostate cancer reveal feels like a northing-burger in the big scheme of things. If the episode wasn’t so long, it’d be much easier to overlook the nonsense and some of the weaker performances in this episode.

However, the writing isn’t strong enough to keep this episode logical or interesting from start to finish. Sadly, this episode was drivel and scores a 4 out of 10.
